much more likely Chelsea would have been picked off and lost... it was boring to watch yes but if you're Chelsea who cares you'd rather win boring than lose in exciting fashion

it's not the way to play against teams much better than you

Bayerns fault (mostly Gomez) that they didn't take advantage of their chances

Amazing the number of C rap teams that win Leagues and Cups, you would think the good teams would stop them.
Report Dylan1975 May 19, 2012 11:18 PM BST
i kind of disagree because Chelsea didn't really give a defensive masterclass where they restricted Bayern to half chances. Bayern created plenty of good chances but didn't take them. Most times when teams play like Chelsea did they'll lose, they just happen to have gotten away with it a few times in the CL this season.

Bayern weren't clinical enough in front of goal and it cost them, but Bayern created plenty of good chances, Chelsea weren't that great defensively.

Was just watcing the replay and (I'm not a fan of the guy) I have to concur, the agression, the fact he rotated his head on the fly as his direction of travel was pretty much straight against the balls - very good technique and goal.
Report Dylan1975 May 19, 2012 11:30 PM BST
i didn't lose anything.

my point was if teams look to copy what Chelsea did i don't think you'd have much success because they needed a lot of luck and poor finishing by the opposition.

Its not as if they gave a defensive masterclass like you used to see from Italian teams where they restricted the opposition to half chances. Bayern had more than enough good chances to score 3 or 4 tonight and the same goes for Barcelona in the semi. So i don't think copying Chelsea's plan will be too successful in the long run.

There have been worse teams that have won the trophy &  a team of Chelsea's ilk will undoubtedly win it again sooner rather than later, at the end of the day they knocked out the best team in Europe over two legs & then beat their fellow finalists in their own backyard, hard to deny that they probably deserved to win this years trophy more than any other team that competed, regardless of the fact they are far from the best team in Europe.

Report ian merseyside May 20, 2012 12:18 AM BST
I agree.  I was pleased that Chelsea won but it's a kick in the teeth for football in general.  Chelsea did it tonight playing defensive football and also in both legs against Barcelona.  QPR did something similar last week at Man City but thankfully adventurous football won it in the end.  I appreciate that there is more than one way to win a football match but if teams start trying to copy the Chelsea way then we are in for some dull games.
Report stu May 20, 2012 12:48 PM BST
Just to return to the interesting points of this debate worth pointing out:

1/ Chelsea didn't only defend. They played classic counter attack, and their goal was also better in quality than Bayern's for the record.

2/ If it was really so easy to play the 'defensive approach', how come poor teams can't do it (e.g. when they visit top teams and get stuffed)?
