What Culture understands from its US-based sources that Kenny Dalglish has resigned as Liverpool manager today.
Dalglish (and assistant manager Steve Clarke) were scheduled to meet the Liverpool board Stateside this morning, including US owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner. We are led to that believe Dalglish’s offer of resignation has been accepted with immediate effect.
The Anfield legend leaves his post after just 16 months in charge and despite delivering a League Cup trophy (their first silverware in six years) and another Wembley final in the FA Cup defeat to Chelsea, Liverpool finished eighth this season after 14 league defeats, finishing 17 points behind the Champions League places and almost 40 points behind the top two.
During his spell in charge Dalglish had spent £114 million on players with the generous warchest partly funded by Fernando Torres’ £50 million sale to Chelsea but also out of the US owners desire to get back into the Champions League. But they were so off the mark this season that their Champions League wish was over months before this past Sunday’s finale when they lost again without a whimper, 1-0 at Swansea.
Liverpool FC are refusing to comment on the situation but The Mirror reported that an official announcement is expected at around 3.30pm or 4pm UK time.
British newspapers reported over the weekend that US owner John Henry was eyeing Wigan manager Roberto Martinez to replace Dalglish after his impressive brand of football has kept the Latics in the Premier Division for another season.

It's difficult though, when the likes of Alan Hansen and Graeme Souness are constantly telling us about Liverpool's great football of the 80s and how it should be simple to replicate that.

he'll be able to finish off that cruise he left to take the job now....the ship's captain told dalglish that he'd hold on in port for him to come back.

I reality sometimes you cannot say much or have to be cautious about what you tell a mate\anyone..especially if they are in the media circles.
There could be many reasons to what has or not taken place. All rumour and hearsay etc followed by the vicious gossiping world we live in.

Dalglish said his departure had been handled in a "honourable, respectful and dignified way".
Owners Fenway Sports Group stressed that the decision to remove Dalglish "was not reached lightly or hastily" and that the search for a new manager would begin immediately.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez and former boss Rafael Benitez have been installed as early favourites to fill the vacancy.
First team coach Steve Clarke, who was Dalglish's first major appointment on taking charge, has resigned in a show of solidarity with Dalglish.
Dalglish's departure comes after face-to-face talks with principal owners John W Henry and Tom Werner in Boston on Monday.
The 61-year-old has paid the price for Liverpool's poor Premier League performances, especially at Anfield.

"I am disappointed with results in the league, but I would not have swapped the Carling Cup win for anything as I know how much it meant to our fans and the club to be back winning trophies," said Dalglish.
