rommel; It's called mind games and the intention is clear. The psychological and football genius that is Sir Alex Ferguson is attempting to "psyche out" his opponents by cranking up the pressure on them, by reminding them of what the penalty for a failure of this magnitude would be.

I stated the same thing on this forum just the other day; my belief is that City would not recover if they fail to beat QPR and United went on to win the title. In my opinion it would collectively break them.

It has nothing to do with lack of class, it's all about winning.
Report themover • May 12, 2012 11:05 AM BST

Report the dza • May 12, 2012 11:37 AM BST
More of this mind games nonsense. Coz it's not like City players don't appreciate the importance of the game, there would be no pressure at all unless Fergie reminded them of that. What rubbish.

The players know what's at stake, regardless of comments around the game. And when the whistle goes for kickoff, all the superfluous sound-bites will have no bearing on what happens in the 90 minutes. And if anybody chokes under the pressure, it's the occasion that got to them -- not someone beforehand saying "Ooh, there's a lot of pressure on that game. It'll be bad if you lost!"

Stop talking bolllox man. United recovered well enough from the scarring of the beasting they got from Leeds back in the early 90's when they folded like a cheap suit on the run in. If any team will find it hard to recover from the title run it would be United throwing away the title after doing a Devon Loch with an ageing side. City have got lucky and will view it as such if they fail to close the deal. They can only get sronger while United get weaker. Throw in the fact that Fergie has clearly lost the mind games over the last few weeks and is desperately trying to claw back lost dignity and you have all the hallmarks of him going the same way as Cloughie.

the mover, well no united wont be so devastated because...
1) they have already "lost" the league
2) they have won so much trophies that this one setback wont make much of an impact. in their minds and reality united are winners and nothing can take that away.

City haven't won a major trophy for 43 years or whatever, so to them it would be devastating, they will always consider themselves losers from that point forward.

You United fans are so bitter it is hilarious. Baiting you is going to be better than having a pop at the scouse idiots (apologies to the classy blue half of Liverpool)

I'll have to agree to disagree, Metaphor. I think when that whistle goes and the game kicks off, all that matters is the occasion itself. The pressure will be huge but I don't see quips from any manager influencing it. The stakes are big enough in their own right.
Report rommel • May 12, 2012 11:56 AM BST

Report the dza • May 12, 2012 11:56 AM BST
And of course, the counter argument is always "If there is no effect, why do Fergie, Jose etc. bother with it?"

The answer is that these guys have big egos and the press love to ask them questions knowing they will get a good sound-bite, generating discussion amongnst plebs like us. Fergie et al say the same things every season; win, lose or draw. They love the sound of their own voice.

When they win, "it's the mind games wot won it!" and when they don't, it's some other mystery. It's nothing to do with the other mob having better players who are strong enough to handle the pressure of big games.
Report rommel • May 12, 2012 11:59 AM BST
to finish i just think fergie overstepped the mark and he has come across as small,-mean spirited maybe,gl all today
Report Eeternaloptimist • May 12, 2012 12:00 PM BST
Exactly. If City fold it will either be because of the fact that they couldn't handle the pressure, couldn't put away their chances, unlucky decisions etc etc. Tomorrow on MOTD one of the first things which would be asked is whether Fergie the master of the mind games had worked his magic again? All total and utter bollox. If Fergie's mind games had worked he wouldn't now be on his knees with his cup out like a shuffling old beggar asking for a few coppers for a bottle of meths and begging Sparky who can't stand the cnunt for a favour.

You only need to see Kevin Keegan's meltdown live on TV, to know how much effect psychological warfare can have. It does matter, anything that can annoy your opponent matters. It rattles them, it gets under their skin so it obviously does soemthing. But how much effect does it have on results? I honestly don't know, how can you quantify it? If it angers your opponent then you have a psychological advantage over them, and any advantage is important.

it was quite amusing seeing Mancini give SAF the hand gesture for being gobby... i'm a united fan. not a supporter due to the strict rules imposed by fellow forum members, just a fan/follower but i quite like that someone is actually challenging for the title and the whole extra vibe Mancini is contributing. Reminds me of the Jose days. would like to see Jose back at Chelsea next season with a pocket full of dough to splash to take on Roberto's merry men.

Even though they know what he's up to its worked.

Mine games work..deal with it friends. Top end managers like mourinho and fergie would not bother if it did not. To what degree depends on a number of other factors on any given situation but there's no doubt they can impact.

Swansea were equally annoyed and despatched, meaning that the "mind games" balls works perfectly, except when it doesn't...

Like I said Roy, these rent-a-quote managers love the sound of their own voices, rather than any magic effect their comments have. They are ego-maniacs. This is why they bother with it. For the sake of it. They get inane questions put to them by a sycophantic press who lap up the bullsh1t. And it's why not all successful bosses do it, because not all of them are rent-a-quotes.

Likewise, there are unsuccessful bosses who talk a lot, but due to their lack of success, it's not known as 'mind-games'.
Report DaveEdwards • May 12, 2012 5:30 PM BST
Haven't read this thread apart from the OP, but my take is that either Fergie needs to work on his script a bit better or get a real psychologist in the help with the mind games.

Untold damage? What a Tsunami roaring in?
