No (at least not in Germany), if Chelsea wins it and is in the first 4, the fifth gets a spot, too. If they are not top 4, the first 4 teams get a spot.

(and Chelsea gets one too of course)

@prele

Sorry but only four teams maximum allowed from one country since above mentioned rule change. The winner of the trophy is always guarenteed a place in the group stage.

Number of clubs per UEFA member association
2.01 UEFA member associations (hereinafter associations) may enter a certain
number of clubs for the competition, in accordance with their position in the
coefficient rankings in Annex Ia, drawn up in accordance with Annex II of
these regulations. However, no association may enter more than four clubs
for the competition. These rankings also determine the stage at which clubs
join the competition.

You must be a Sunderland supporter Sad, ah well you can't help trouble. I hear Sunderland will be selling some players close season to cut their wage bill. Laugh

presumably the 3rd place team would have to qualify and not go automatically through to group stage ?

'If..indeed' ....Arsenal, Spurs and Newcastle fans needn't worry; it won't be an issue.

It will be tough for Chelsea to win the final

Chelsea will be without 4 key players plus possibly Cahill, I would expect Real Madrid to beat them, if Bayern get through they will have home advantage. Having said that it is a 'one off' game and anything can happen. Chelsea should be proud of what they achieved last night, to a man they battled magnificently.

if it is bayern 1 chelsea 1 after 90 minutes, chelsea should win on away goals !

toffee 3rd automatic, chelsea would have to qualify.

@toffee

I think everything else will remain equal and the top three teams (from the EPL) also all qualify for the group stage.

@ moto

Chelsea wouldn't have to qualify. Uefa always want the holder in the main competitionth (the group stages).

Titleholder
2.03 The UEFA Champions League titleholder is guaranteed a place in the group
stage even if it does not qualify for the competition through its domestic
championship.

In the OP's scenario 4th place goes into the Europa League instead of the Champions League.
