another jealous englishman. give credit where its due, la liga is a fantastic league and the spain NT are just brillaint.

Fair dues to chelsea, nowhere near the most talented team in the CL, but fought it out and got through.

Class from barca at the end, signing their team off, clapping the chelsea players and Xavi hugging every chelsea player. Classy from a classy club.

I can't understand some of the fools on here. One team is all out attack and the other just sits back and blocks the defence on a 4-5-1 across the edge of the penalty area and they blame the ones on all out attack.
It isn't Barca who need to change their game the opponents should play 4-4-2 or similar. Trouble is Barca would absolutely murder them if they did. Sadly negative defensive football has succeeded and that can only be bad for the game.

i fear your right brigust, euro 2012 will be a disaster with copycat teams
Report berto77 April 25, 2012 9:27 AM BST
Not really brigust1.  Barca are great to watch but i don't want them to win 8-0 every week.  If Chelsea had opened up they would have been thrashed and we would have been deprived of a genuinely great tie.

The fact the best team doesn't always win is one of the joys of football.  Chelsea defended well.  Barca didn't.  Defending is just as much a part of football as attacking.
Report Biscuit1979 April 25, 2012 9:30 AM BST
The best team doesn't always win, that's football.
Report brigust1 April 25, 2012 9:53 AM BST
It is true about the best team not always winning but some of the posters blamed Barca for their tactics. The ref blows the whistle and Chelsea fall back into a 4-5-1 across the edge of the penalty area and Barca get blamed for passing it around them. It's a bit like a boxer hiding his head in his gloves for 15 rounds while his opponent dances around him trying to open him up.

And Berto I don't want Barca to win 8-0 every week but surely the other teams should try to win by attacking them and eventually they may/will succeed. Being totally defensive minded means you pick the wrong players or play them in the wrong positions.

And anyway, with only the slightest bit of fortune Barca would have put this game beyond hope in the first leg and Chelsea would have had to attack them. We may have seen a proper game then.
Report Biscuit1979 April 25, 2012 9:57 AM BST
it's easy to question barca's tactics but they hit the woodwork 4 times over the 2 legs, which is about as many shots as Chelsea had in total. If one of those goes in, or if Messi scored his penalty they'd probably have closed the game out and gone through. All ifs and buts i know, but it's a bit much to say their greatness is over.
Report berto77 April 25, 2012 9:58 AM BST
I agree to a point brigust1, but I thought it was a proper game as it was.  Barca were ahead for only 2 minutes in the entire tie which meant Chelsea were able to defend an advantage ever since Drogba's goal.  I can't blame them for their tactics, it was up to Barca to get their nose in front and force Chelsea to attack.  They couldn't do it.
Report dashero April 25, 2012 10:02 AM BST

Report metaphor April 25, 2012 10:26 AM BST
Gentlemen please, how can you call yourself football people yet know so little about the game? Well allow me to educate you on the finer points of Association Football. It's Barcelona's tactics that cause other sides to sit back so deep in defence. You must have noticed that the Catalans love to pin the opposition to their own box, then camp out there until they find a way through? They don't allow the opposition to open up and play. It's Barcelona's actual tactics, part of their game-plan. They buzz around that box like busy little bees, harassing the opposition with their manic 5 yard passing game.

It's to the benefit of football that it didn't work against Chelsea, who were superb in defence and indeed only lost concentration once in the entire two legs, when Barca scored their first goal.

Chelsea didn't so much adopt that defensive strategy, they were forced to adopt that strategy by Barcelona. Hopefully this might cause Barcelona to adopt new tactics in future, the hemming in of the opposition in this manner makes for a rather odd and manic spectacle - with all the play in the opposition's 18 yard box.

How they kept Barca from scoring a third I will never know. They had Drogba / Torres playin left back & Ivanovic and Boswinga playin centreback ffs ShockedShocked

Barca had 82% of second half possesion and yet Chelsea were the only team to score in the second half. Unbelievable scenes.

Back on topic, I'm n0ot so sure it's the end of an era for Barcelona. After all, this team have regained the Champions League befor lest we not forget.

One thing they have to address though is the need for an out and out centre forward, as that has been sadly lacking in these three games in the last week. I'm not convinced Alexis Sanchez is quite up to it yet and obviously David Villa is a big miss.

Need to get at least a couple of CF options though so they don't need to resort to chucking Keita up front as a last ditch effort or play a front three of Messi, Frabregas and Sanchez.
