Claimed they weren't a pair of hillbillies.

Perhaps hillbillyboys would be more apt?

One of the proud Scotsmen in an England shirt and the other in the (two for £20.00*) blue and grey. Both are currently being fitted out in the stripey suits and breaking rocks in the wet sun,

* shirts not players (although Broadfoot and Lafferty could be bought for that amount).

The term 'Hillbillys' came about when a couple of centuries ago a large amount of ulster scots emigrated to southern America and a small section of the more 'robust' Ulster scots moved a little out of the city into a remote area upon a hill where they proceeded to live in modest wealth, drink large amounts of alcohol on a daily basis amongst their own community. They were known by the other Ulster scot settlers as the' hill billys' in reference to their 'King Billy' routes. They were often regarded as the less intelligent of the original settlers.
