Surely even the most fervent supporter of the  Premiership as having the best players/teams in Europe will now wake up and smell the coffee.  You could argue that it may well be the most exciting, unpredictable, toughest or other adjectives which promote rather subjective views but may nonetheless promote healthy debate.  However it is now completely futile to argue that the English Premiership has the best teams in Europe though I suspect some of the Rule Britannia brigade will continue to spout forth such nonsense. I recall Rodney Marsh claiming the Premiership had the best teams in Europe when the Champions League semi finalists were Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Bayern Munich.  When asked how he could possibly say this in the light of the four teams left in the tournament, he said,  'It just is.'

I don't think anyone really believes it's the best league in the world anymore. There are far too many English players playing for the EPL teams (still) that aren't upto scratch. It's the reason behind Manures european demise this season, too many English players. Sad but true. Segunda B teams have more skills than a lot of these English teams.

R0y how can you say this is the first season in ten that EPL teams have dominated the Champions League?

There have been more Spanish teams than English in the semi finals for three years running now and La Liga will be the top ranked league in europe next year.

Also you cant just dismiss Barcelona and Madrid to make a point. Like it or not both these teams play in Spain and are part of the La Liga argument.

You are reading too much into one bad season, it's a blip that's all. EPL sides will rule Europe next season as usual.

If this is just 'a blip' then what was the excuse last season when we had just one premier league side in the semis or the season before when we had none? This year will mean that in the last 3 seasons of the 12 semi final places available, just ONE was taken by an English side.
In addition to that, EVERY single time an English side has faced a Spanish side in the knockout stages of both the champions league AND the Europa league in the last 3 years, the Spanish side has won. If it's a blip, it's a f*cking long one.

Let's face it, the premier league is no longer the best league in the world. It's the most exciting league. But for skill, technique, passing etc, la Liga is now a long way ahead of our league.
Report high_lander March 16, 2012 12:41 PM GMT
Biscuit... those figures are mainly because of one club (Barcelona) who have dominated the CL for the past few years. Barcelona are exceptional, the rest of the Spanish sides are very beatable albeit RM have improved a lot under Mourinho. A this moment Barca and RM are probably 1 & 2 in Europe, but it wont last for much longer. When Mourinho leaves RM will go downhill and whatever British club he ends up at will improve rapidly.

I still say for strength and depth the EPL is the top league in the world, hell even the likes of Birmingham from the Championship took some scalps in Europe this season. Also EPL sides would do much better in the Europa League if any of them cared about winning it, it's obvious that they don't. The bigger clubs see it as an unwelcome obstacle to top 4/title ambitions, the other clubs see it as a problem to EPL survival/top 6 ambitions.

In conclusion, this is really about Barcelona and Mourinho, take those 2 out of the equation and the EPL dominate Europe.

Bayern have knocked out utd and city recently, if the two Spanish sides are way ahead, then they are next best
Report Biscuit1979 March 16, 2012 1:01 PM GMT
English sides have also been knocked out by Valencia, Bilbao and Atletico Madrid in recent years though so it's not all Barca and Real. If the strength and depth of our league is so vast, surely we should be disposing of these second rate spaniards?

And i still don't buy this 'not caring' about the Europa. Professional footballers always want to win. If Fergie didn't care would he have played a strong side last night? Rooney certainly wouldn't have started if he didn't care, he'd have played Berbatov. And are you telling me City didn't care in that 2nd half last night?

English clubs hiding behind the "we don't care" excuse now they're out is pretty poor to be honest. Our 2 top sides have been knocked out of Europe TWICE by March. Says it all really.
Report high_lander March 16, 2012 1:20 PM GMT
You're talking about the Europa league with Valencia, Bilbao and At Madrid, right? I refer you to my previous statement on the Europa League.

Fergie didn't play a very strong side yesterday, it was mix of reserve players and first teamers. And it was obvious they gave up at half-time. IMO Man City threw last nights game to concentrate on the EPL title race. Will you now tell me that Portuguese football is better than the EPL? Maybe you really believe Sporting are better than City? They should give City an Oscar for their 2nd half performance though. They reminded me on the racehorse left far too much to do by the jockey, finishing very strongly but never quite going to get there.

I would like to see the EPL sides try and win the Europa league but the truth is they see it a nuisance, come on have you not heard Harry Rednapp moan about it?! At least he's honest. They have to find a way to make the Europa Cup worth winning.

I stand by what I said, the EPL is still number one and no other nation comes close to its strength in depth.

Bayern Munich are a very good side and are the only side in Germany that can compete with ManU, Barca, RM. I thought they were very lucky to knock out ManU, Utd down to 10 men unfairly imo and a wonder goal threaded through the eye of a needle.

"Fergie didn't play a very strong side yesterday"

De Gea, Rafael, evans, rio, evra, carrick, giggs, young, rooney are all current first teamers. How is that not a strong side?

"IMO Man City threw last nights game"

Yes it looked that way, you could tell that Joe Hart wasn't really trying to score and they wanted to go out CryCry

Laugh So who exactly were Man U "trying" against this season in Europe???
Report high_lander March 16, 2012 1:32 PM GMT
That's not Fergie's top side, it's half and half and he took off Rio early. Rooney wants to play every game.
Carrick is no longer a first choice and Young is behind Valencia and Nani in the pecking order.

My main concern is with the Europa League, they have to find a way of making it more appealing. How about a guaranteed CL slot to the finalists? I mean straight into the league, no prelims.
Report high_lander March 16, 2012 1:39 PM GMT

Report high_lander March 16, 2012 1:51 PM GMT
City were trying 100% in the CL, I think lack of European experience as a team cost them dearly there. It was also a very tough group, they were unlucky with the draw.

ManU grossly underestimated their opponents and paid the price.
Report BARNEY21. March 16, 2012 1:51 PM GMT

What EPL does have is money to buy talent..
Report jhartshill March 16, 2012 8:48 PM GMT
I've long said that the Premier League is riding for a fall and the drop in quality has been evident in the last 2 seasons. The real problem is this: if the decline continues, the best players will drift away – not just to Spain, but even to places like Russia where wealthier investors are starting to buy up football teams. The attraction of buying Premier League clubs, or even remaining at them, will also decline – after all, why would a Russian oligarch bother with Chelsea when clubs in other countries can win European trophies? The wider issue is that the Premier League is not sustainable in its current form. Clubs consistently make heavy losses, television revenues cannot possibly hope to match salaries of six figures per week, and in any case the overall “marketing” of football will inevitably decline in hardened financial times.

The 100,000 a week salaries depend on 45 quid shirts and 60 quid tickets and with people tightening their belts, that's a financial model which no longer adds up. Instead, EPL clubs follow the "Gretna model" depending on Arab billionaires, Russian oligarchs or American super-investors – but all those rich guys have other options now. How long before Abramovich for example gets tired of bankrolling Chelsea? He's obviously not the most patient of people....

Just like the real economy, it’ll only take one drip to create the flood. Losing a club or two (even down the food chain) or a fourth Champions’ League place will soon create the trickle.
