Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has defended the club's progress this season insisting that too much focus is put on 'trophies or points'.

The Reds lifted the Carling Cup in February, their first trophy in six years, but have since slumped in the Premier League and look unlikely to secure a top-four finish.

However, their Scottish manager believes that the work done off the pitch indicates that the Merseyside outfit are moving forward.

"The club is now where it was before - each one for each one, everybody in it together," he told reporters.

"There are many ways you can judge a season and the best way is progress at the football club as a whole. I don't think it necessarily relates to trophies or points."

"You can measure it by how the club has progressed and where it is, from the first team to the kids."

"Off the pitch, especially, the club is a lot stronger than what it was. You go off the pitch and see how much money we are getting through sponsorship and kit deals."

"You look at the academy and see how much better it is. You look around here (at Melwood) and most of the people have got a smile on their faces now. The squad is stronger than it was last year. What other areas are there to improve on - apart from points?"

Are you happy with the progress? Or do you think he's waffling a bit to try and excuse the poor league form?
Football as we all know is essentially a results business and that is usually how a manger is judged.

kit deals far more important than points as KK says

gotta start somewhere , cleared a lot out , sponsorship and tapping into markets that should have been done years ago , aka man utd with their global commercial deals and smashing the asian market
Report sintonian March 13, 2012 9:55 AM GMT
He is clearly trying to divert attention from the poor league form as most managers do and find positives in other areas, but at the same time needs to admit they have not been good enough, particularly some of the purchases he has made.imo.
Report Biscuit1979 March 13, 2012 9:58 AM GMT
Haven't Liverpool always sold sh*tloads of merchandise worldwide though? He can hardly claim that as progress.
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER March 13, 2012 9:59 AM GMT
I think hes just bieng totally honest, the club was in all sorts of turmoil, steps from possible administration, embroiled in a takeover bid

for a club of its stature, it was not really capatalising on the financial side, they have since signed some eye catching contracts in terms of revenue

they were out of europe and trophyless for 6 years, the playing squad was massive with plenty of dead wood, its now much smaller admittedly still with some deadwood according to many

on the pitch the elague campaign has been dissapointing, although hes been in charge around 12 months, and has deleivered a trophy and european football, stil in the other cup comp at the moment

The squad is stronger imo, but thats subjective currently the team are playing poorly and results have suffered, but on the whole I cant really fault what hes said again imo
Report squigs March 13, 2012 10:03 AM GMT
Kit deals and sponsorship is the role of the commercial director. Commercial income is going to struggle if the team doesn't perform.

Manchester United are apparently the standard setter for commercial income in the far east, yet the revenue from this is a drop in the ocean compared to revenue from the UK.

The big eye-catching deal with Standard Chartered was signed before Dalglish even arrived so he is stretching it claiming credit for that now.

Dalglish's remit is the football side and if it was anyone else Liverpool fans would not be happy. It's welcoming that Liverpool stick with Dalglish but judging on a results buisness you can't say he has been a huge success.
Report berto77 March 13, 2012 10:05 AM GMT
Not sure John Henry would agree.  He made his expectations clear in August:

"This year our goal is to get back to Champions League.  This is a club with a history in European competition and people throughout the world - at least our supporters - yearn for European nights. That’s our first goal."

It's obviously good for Liverpool to improve sponsorship and commercial revenues, but this is hardly an achievement KK can take credit for.

I think they are making progress but the bottom line is tht the team have under achieved on the pitch this season especially given the relative weaknesses of arsenal and Chelsea.

Ask yourself this.  With the squad they have plus a couple of summer additions, which of the top 5 will Liverpool overhaul next season?
Report maverick March 13, 2012 10:05 AM GMT
the warrior sports deal is absolutely huge. that said, dalglish will have had nothing to do with it and can only take credit/blame for the football related stuff.
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER March 13, 2012 10:07 AM GMT
Its a thin line between success and failure, last season they finished 7th, out of europe and trophyless,

this season they have remedied two of those so far, dont think they could realistically be expected to challenge for the title in such a short space of time

but league form especially at home has been dissapointing results wise, although form itself has not been too bad

I will wait for seasons end and then re visit this thread to see if anythings changed
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER March 13, 2012 10:09 AM GMT
Dalglish is not a stupid person, he will know the results have not been good enough, but its hard to say the club have not progressed as a whole ove the last 12 months
Report maverick March 13, 2012 10:16 AM GMT
I think that's all true RP. However the question remains as to whether the progression has been value for the investment made
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER March 13, 2012 10:21 AM GMT
The owners will see it as a good return on investment imo, look what they took over, as I stated, a club not perfroming comercially, a team not performing on the pitch, (no trophies for 6 years and no european football)

As owners thier investment as seen a trophy, and european football return, plus comercial revenue has risen considerably

Their ultimate goal is cl football and to win the title, KD may not be the man to deliver it I dont know, but hes the man who made the first steps to possibly achieving it

I understand people who have an alternate view on the situation, but the facts are indisputable again imo
Report Clueless1 March 13, 2012 10:23 AM GMT
there is no positives to take from liverpools poor season a mid table team getting worse
Report Biscuit1979 March 13, 2012 10:24 AM GMT
RP - i think it's clear they have progessed (certainly in terms of a trophy and europe), but some of the things Dalglish is saying are irrelevant. Liverpool will always shift merchandise so that's not down to him, and they've always had a fairly good youth team, but again that's not down to him.

The playing squad has improved but the average man in the street could improve a squad with 100m to spend. A lot of his buys (Carroll, Henderson, Downing) would fetch nowhere near what they paid, should they sell them on.

And the league position hasn't improved either. Last year they were 6th, 22 points off top. There's a fair chance they'll finish lower than that and be over 30 points adrift of the champions.
Report Clueless1 March 13, 2012 10:25 AM GMT
how will they remain attractive commercially if they are mid table playing dull football
Report Biscuit1979 March 13, 2012 10:31 AM GMT
Liverpool are a huge brand worldwide. I think only United and Spains big 2 sell more merchandise than them, and that's without them winning the league in most young peoples lifetime.
Report REDUNDANT PUNTER March 13, 2012 10:33 AM GMT
I may have got it wrong, but dont think hes trying to take credit for anything, I guess it depends how the questions arose

hes simply saying progression can be measured in a lot of differeng ways, and everyone has played a part or should play apart

Obvoiulsy all liverpool fans would want a higher league position, and some of his buys have underperformed, but some have done ok, bellamy and enrique have done well

its not all perfect, but you have to start somewhere, and yes you could say they will be midtable or lower and worse off points wise

or they could end the season with two trophies, as I said I like to review it at the end and then you can make a clearer judgement imo

The Warrior deal is worth up to £300m, however a lot of that money will be performance related - obviously the sponsors will pa more if they get more exposure, like CL football. I guess that without CL football, the amounts will be significantly lower.

Dalglish can take credit for that!
Report charwell. March 13, 2012 11:33 AM GMT
Not sure KD is dealing with reality here. As the 1st team manager he can take no credit for the youth system appearing to be choc full of talent, nor does he line up the kit deals and sponsorship.

Off the pitch we look stronger. But on the pitch, i.e his remit we are dreadful. Money wasted on players who it was clear to the astute weren't up to scratch and paying top $. The team has not progressed, in fact we look weaker than we have done for years. We have all the cutting edge of a jelly and lack cohesion and motivation on the pitch. The formations/sustitutions/team selections are all under scrutiny.

KD brief was to get CL footy. He has failed to do this. Love you KK but you cannot cut it at a managerial level these days and need to go for the good of the club.

We are a mid table team getting worse indeed. Our 'supporters' and Manager embarrass us at every turn. There are fewer clubs with a bigger and mis-guided ego and quite frankly we deserve what we get. Andy Carrol is barely a footballer, Henderson is a non entity. Enrique has been a stalwart but the rest can sod off to be honest. We find ourselves missing Lucas so far have the mighty fallen.

The handling of the Suarez incident was an absolute disgrace that further heaped scorn on to a once great club.

Above I have used the term 'we' in the loosest possible sense. I no longer care for my past association with the club and it staggers me beyond belief anyone would pay hundreds each year to go watch them. Even when we were pants under Rafa we had players that cared, Smicer etc, limited talent but full of heart. This team has nothing.

BISCUIT, im sure mr henry said that, but I believe or am led to believe KD was set targets for this season, measurable targets that he was aware of before the season started

and cl football was not one of the measurables for this season so I believe, as said if im wrong and cl was his set target then I expect he will leave at the season end

RP - Kenny's mate Phil Thompson obviously wasn't told about that memo:

"There's a genuine belief among Liverpool fans that the club can pose a serious title challenge next season."

And the former centre-back sees no reason why that won't happen, although he admits winning the title would be a big ask for Dalglish's men.  "I have to admit its difficult to go from sixth to become champions. But from what we saw last year, I think we could have a huge say in the title race."

Dalglish says that the FA should throw the book at Wenger, for calling Suarez a diver, thats rich coming from someone who had his team so blatantly back a racist. By the way Wenger was only telling the truth, Suarez goes over waving his arms around as if calling for the trainer to rush on and see to his broken leg.
