That was the idea wasn't it, get someone to run the U21s and then have them step up when Capello left? What's he done that means that's not going to happen? When did Redknapp hijack the party? Are tactical considerations not an issue at International level, and are we happy to re-embrace the Keegan ethics of England FC type management?
Seriously, what does Redknapp have to offer other than a better relationship with the presss? You cannot argue that his managerial record is any better than previous flops like Taylor and McClaren. He has precious little experience in Europe, and away from home in his few CL games his teams have looked all over the place at times. I am baffled how this has become a fait accompli without any questions about how England would play under him and when it goes against the original stated intentions of the FA that were lauded by press and players alike

I agre, Pearce is the man for the job, he is already in the England setup. Harry should stay put tbh
he's not great tactically in the big games, that's for sure. far too gung ho.
Pearce shot my mate in the back with an airgun at school once. Just schoolboy high jinks, no damage done. I hope he gets the job then my mate can make some money selling the story to the red tops maybe.
Any job is a comparison between the varying candidates.

I don't get why Capello gets slated as being a bad England manager, anyone who evens gets the England team through international qualifiers should be applauded not ridiculed. For some reason the general public on the whole seem to think that England has some world class players that should be winning stuff. The players are average, have been for 40 years and probably will be for the next 40 years.

we have always had a good squad. But playing these **** national teams wont help the cause for tournament football

Moofer - did you watch England U21s in the summer. Terrible selection and negative tactics. Would hate to see Pearce get the job just because he is patriotic.
i watched the games leading up to it... which were superb. But as usual, like the senior team, **** matches against **** apponents.

the principle was to educate a manager in the setup to take over when the time was right. within that there isn't the opportunity for Pearce to go out and manage at club level and get a record, so making comparisons is a futile task.
the question is whether that plan was flawed and whether the FA should not follow it through. Redknapp maybe the Englishman with the best club record (currently in management that is, so we can ignore Joe Royle, Howard Wilkinson and also without Shteve McClaren), but that kind of record has been shown to be inadequate at International level in the past

It's 10 per cent about the formation and 90 per cent about the players. If you have the best ones and they do their jobs, then they can pretty much play any way you want them to.

I think Dr Guff should get the job. He has the right credentials to get the most out of the England team.

There's obviously no magic formula for success in International management so maybe Harry's "gung-ho, up and at 'em, remember the dambusters" approach can work.
Players like playing for him and who's to say he can't inspire what is supposed to be the cream of the crop to produce the goods.

we wont know whether the plan to educate a manager through the system or not is flawed untill it's tried. but quite frankly if the fa want to become a retirement home for ex internationals who've failed at club management [pearce and southgate] we aren't going to find out whether it's a scheme worth trying or not.
as far as 'arry goes , the clamour for an englishman puts him top of the list, but i'm afraid his profile as a manager is too similar to keegans for my liking. but if they want an englishman it looks loke it will be 'arry or pearce. and neither fill me with that much hope.

not sure any ENGLISH MANAGERS are too good at he tactical side of the game.
They may be able to bring more passion into the players but they all lack to tactical expertise needed to suceed at international level look at the way totenham fell apart yesterday and harry r hadent a clue how to stop arsenal

It's pretty desperate if the best the FA can offer is a man that is older than the last three English international managers - Harry is 65 on Saturday, and thus older than Keegan, Hoddle and McClaren.
Indeed, he's only 30 months younger than Graham 'Turnip' Taylor and his period as manager now seems like pre history.
How come he's the obvious candidate at 65, but barely got a mention at 60, 58, 54 or 52, the last four times the job changed hands?

harry...he is just the flavour of the month because he had a good season with spurs but then there is a complete lack of alternative english managers so they will have to appoint a foreign manager again
They should just give the job to Nigel Adkins now to save having to do it in about 4 years time.
This is the worst season for standard of football in the Premiership. Yet Harry Redknapp and his team are only 3rd. If Harry can't win the league this year he should be sacked and not touted for the England job.
harry might struggle to get away without paying income tax if his wages for managing england are puplic knowledge
paying the tax might worry him more than FAILING AS MANAGER

Where is the statement from the FA the u21 coach was being groomed for the main job?
Pearce himself has made it very clear he isn't the right man. Last week he said:
"This job, and the profile of his job, is for a very experienced man with a far better CV than I have at this moment in time."
Case closed?

Pearce seems to be under the impression a draw equals a win. England U21's could not be more boring if they tried.
Pearce once thought a good way to help him get a result was to put his daughters teddy bear alongside him in the Man City dugout. Alf Ramsey he ain't.

I'm not sure those were positive signals. at a guess it looked like embarrassment over a decision that had already been made (assuming he was some FA bod)

While Pearce was manager of City, we played some of the worst football I have ever seen. My dad who alternates his season ticket with my brother, didn't see a goal all season.

That was Steve Wigley SF, his assistant. I'd imaging he was aftertiming his inclusion of Walcott ;-)
