When you have a lot of money, you want to use it for enjoyment and showing up, it's stupid to let it to rot in bank. Football is one of the most popular show in the world, it's exciting to be part of it.
And it don't cost so much to them. Football clubs generate revenues which normally cover the expenses, and when they have enough they can sell back the club, sometimes for more than they buy it. |

abramovich got his wealth by basically ripping off the russian people. in the last decade or so putin / the state has started to take on some of the oligarchs who raped the country in the 90s (oviously not all of them, he isn't persecuting them over any notion of justice either) basically abramovich bought chelsea for one reason - to raise his profile (especially in the west). he knew he wouldn't make money off the club but the prestige associated with it he hoped might make him well known enough to stop him getting persecuted back home.
look up what happened to khodorkovsky. its hardly a coincidence that as the state was starting to turn the screw on him through 2002 and 2003 it was at that point abramovich decided he quie liked the idea of owning cfc |

Khodorkovsky was an idiot. He started openly questioning the special deals Putin was signing away to his contacts. Rather rich given that Khodorkovsky made a lot of his money by forging many of those same deals with Yeltsin. If he had just stayed quiet and not pursued his political ambitions, he would almost certainly have been fine.

ARABS - More money than sense which they've obtained for free because they own a country that has lots of oil/gas. Therefore they can afford to spunk it up on clubs that have some history as it's a nice play thing and it means they get to spend some time away from a country that's too hot to live in away from some angry people who may think it a bit unfair to use a country's resources on a whimsical play thing.
