with betfair especially when you have france at 8/5, italy at 7/5 and portugal at around 8/5 ish too.

Doesn't make sense, England IMO have a better side clearly than the Italians and Portuguese. France are a similar level with players like Benzema, Nasri, Ribery, Remy, and will be a threat, but I still think England will top the group and then face and beat the poor italians in the quarters.

England have some of the best young players in europe in wilshere, rooney, johnson, smalling/jones and more, and these youngsters could really do well at major tournaments. Even without Rooney for first two games, there are strikers who can stand up to the mark.

I just dont get why the other sides are ahead of england to reach the semis in terms of price, as England will probably finish top of the group and then face probably beat without too many problems Italy in the quarters. Getting further will be tough when probably facing the germans but I expected to reach the semis that England would be a lot lower??????

Cheers

Unique19 - is it our impressive record of reaching major semi finals, our equally impressive record against the other major footballing nations, our outstanding displays at the 2010 world cup, or the fact we failed to beat Montenegro, Switzerland and Ghana at home in the past year that led you to reach the conclusion we are a great bet for the semis?

biscuit, we have some world level operators in the national team now.

We may have a poor record but how many have we lost on penalties? If we didnt lose all them on penalties wed have won a tournament or two and been a regular semi final team no question.

England just need a little luck and to hold their bottle, with less expectation i expect them to do well.

Capello was a massive problem and if we can get redknapp in we are a force to be reckoned with.

that being said england have no chance
Report tuckyboy February 21, 2012 3:12 PM GMT
Unique, here are some facts for you.

None of the young players you mention in your first post is odds-on to start at the Euros - certainly not if, as seems likely, Redknapp is the manager. Good old JT, Stevie G, and Scholesy will play instead, and we will be overrun - again - by superior players managed by more astute managers.

We do not have a single world-class player any more, given that Rio is close to the end and Ashley Cole is also getting old. Apart from those two, we do not have any player who would get into any off the top four or five sides in the world right now, or at any time in the last ten years. The only player who even approaches being a decent footballer, Rooney, is suspended, and tends, apart from his first appearance in Euro 2004, to disgrace himself either with his behaviour, his play, or both, when the eyes of the world are upon him.

History dictates that the high hopes cherished by the population of England will be sunk by the reality that our footballers are just not very good, ill-disciplined, and arrogant enough to believe that their pay packets are commensurate with their ability.

Having said all that, we could be a force at the 2014 World Cup as it will give Redknapp or whoever a couple of years to remove the long-term failures like Gerrard, Lampard and Terry and blood some of the very promising youngsters we have.

I agree though why take SG, FL and previous failures? Start the youngsters and build.

I understand some may say england wont win it, but not even get to the semis? England have a great chance if they face italy in the quarters.

Report Unique19 February 21, 2012 3:25 PM GMT

England have got past the Euro's group stage just twice in history (in 1996 and 2004).

They've have NEVER won a single knockout match in 90 mins and ET (although they did of course get through the quarters in 96 on penalties v Spain).

I hope I'm wrong, but with doubts over most of our best players, I wouldn't fancy us to do that well.

previous tournaments do not matter, its the future that does.

Who will score the goals while rooney is out? Walcott, Bent, Carroll, Defoe, Oxlaide Chamberlein, Young etc etc.
Report YOMOMMA February 21, 2012 5:35 PM GMT
Those 5 players you've mentioned are rubbish and bar Defoe who has decent spells from time to time can't even hack it in the Premiership. Carroll is one of the worst "forwards" I've ever seen play. He's only scored a handful of goals and most of those were in cup competitions against lower league teams.

Report woozie February 21, 2012 5:47 PM GMT
Well I have so little faith in the English side I have opted for France to win the EURO 2012 @ 16/1. I have a fair bit of money on it and with Rooney banned, Capello stepping down, Issues over captaincy, questions over JT and the racism row and the persistent faith in the older lot (gerrard, lumplard, rio, terry and cole) makes it hard for me to believe England can win. France seem a great bet to lay at least, they will surely get out of that group.

As a previous poster wrote this side will be a real force for 2014. Players like Joe Hart(who will certainly take captaincy at some point) alongside Rooney, Phil Jones, Kyle Walker, Jack Wilshere, Daniel Sturridge, Andy Carroll, Danny Welbeck, Adam Johnson etc..

I assume this was a response to me? The list certainly is longer with players like Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jack Rodwell, Marc Albrighton, Micah Richards as other off the top of my head suggestions. I am sure you will be quick to shoot some down but as a squad they have a lot of young players coming through with good potential. Let's not forget players such as Rooney/Richards/Milner are still mid 20's players with a lot of impact for England up to 2020
Report Unique19 February 21, 2012 5:55 PM GMT

Report Unique19 February 21, 2012 5:57 PM GMT
agreed woozie, if england didnt field the oldies like lampard/gerrard etc, how far do you think england can get this tournament?

or is too early for the youngsters to make an impact?
Report The Magic Flea February 21, 2012 5:58 PM GMT
they don't play like a team. Players are irrelevant. Look at the last teams that have won major championships. Italy and Greece won purely through teamwork. Argentina on paper has the strongest team yet they get nowhere. Germany rebuilt their team, but still managed to reach the final in 2002 with the crappiest team of all time.

This attitute is missing in England, and Capello was getting it under wraps. These youngsters you mention have the speed, but generally run around like headless chickens

flea, theres nothing to say that these youngsters wont work as a team and achieve more than the previous lot
Report The Magic Flea February 21, 2012 6:03 PM GMT
ofcourse there is. They are in the U21 team under the management of a tactically inept bloke. In their specific teams they are used to playing with extremely skilled foreigners in specific roles. Group them together and they just boot and chase the ball forward
Report woozie February 21, 2012 6:08 PM GMT
YOMOMMA - I am certainly not patriotic either. I am born and bred Welsh looking forward to a Triple Crown on the weekend. I am can see though that there is talent in that England squad. Don't get me wrong I love players like Stevie G but there days are numbered. Parker has proved he still has the bit between his teeth. Kyle Walker, Phil Jones and Oxlade are certainly players that deserve to be in that starting squad come EURO 2012 though. Be nice to have Wilshere(if fit) and Milner involved there too.

And in answer to Unique19 I cannot really forsee a scenario where England will ever beat Germany or Spain but all it takes is to get the ball rolling. A new manager and feel good in the camp must be a good thing. I was never Capello's biggest fan.
Report Unique19 February 21, 2012 6:08 PM GMT
