Any country that harbours and protects dozens of nazi war criminals isnt gonna worry about fixing a football match to suit its own needs.

Donny, I might be dreaming this, but I'm sure I once saw Charlton have strange numbers, including No 1 as an outfield player.

Any Addicks confirm this?

Loved the '74 World Cup. Holland the best side ive ever seen. Great players in every position except the keeper Jan Jongbloed who must have been Scottish.

Good memory ccjefc.

I thought I might have made that up.

Another vague memory, this one from the late 70's or early 80's, and I'm not sure if I made this up too.

Did England once play Liverpool in an unofficial game? I think  it was a time when Liverpool provided England with probably 6-7 players.

tomaszewski.called a clown by cloughie broke our hearts that evening.
The 70`s were magical and memorable.I also remember running home to catch the 3.30 kick offs in germany.I was a tad annoyed that Holland didnt win it,they deserved to.Cruyff was some player.
Even the world cup pundits were great.Cloughie,Alison etc.

I don't really remember the 1974 World Cup, so '78 was my first WC memory.

As a kid it was magical, foreign players, different colours, ticker tape, the final being held up because one of the Van Der Kerkof (sp?) brothers had the wrong cast on.

It wasn't until much later that I found out the horror the Argentine government imposed on it's people.

Though I don't remember WC 74, for some reason I remember the FA Cup Final's of '73 & '74.

Growing up in Liverpool you couldn't avoid the 1974 Final, but '73 I fell in love with Jim Montgomery and Sunderland.
So much so that my parents took me to Stoke for a FA Cup tie against Sunderland around 1975 or 1976 so I could see my hero.
Report elisjohn February 10, 2012 10:23 PM GMT
donny, yes the eng v pol qualifier was on live in 73.great game with fantastic comm by brian moore, even the league cup final wasnt live until late 70s

Report sportacus February 10, 2012 10:54 PM GMT
I also remember the 82 world cup and the biggest fix of all was West Germany and Austria fixing a 1-0 win for West Germany which would see both teams qualify.
The play after germany scored was of non contact, dont come near any penalty areas and take as long as possible taking a throw.
Even the commentator was ashamed of what he was witnessing.
Algeria were the victims of austro-german pact.

1978 World Cup was pure theatre - I loved it.

I know we are taught to hate Argies, but the passion the fans showed was breath taking. I hated the generals in charge of the country, but I admire the fans and the common people.

Most people at the time thought the Peru game was a fix, but as said Argentina had the best and most entertaining side.
Report ieardthatpardon February 11, 2012 12:51 PM GMT
for some reason, think it may have been something to do with flight preojectory of the ball, there were a whole lot of those long-range goals, havent seen so many in any comp since 78.
Report brngtwt February 11, 2012 1:09 PM GMT
Peru were magic at that tournament, push and run football and the ball never left the deck.
Deserved to qualify in my opinion, the players wore an all white kit V Argentina in protest so the clues were there all along.
Remember as kids we were all thrashing shots from anywhere to try and recreate the long distance goals.
arie Haan from 40 yards against Dino Zoff then regarded as the best keeper in the world....
great memories.

The Sunday Times did the original exposure of this story in 1986 (I believe it was on the actual day of the '86 World Cup Final).

That was the filthiest renewal of a World Cup since the days of Fascism in the 30s, when Italy were the recipients of very imaginable favour.

The deal worked out between the 2 countries wasn't just prisoners. As I recall it involved agricultural supplies as well, but at my great age I don't rmmbr all the fin details.

And as for the 'but Peru hit the post so it couldn't possibly be a f i x' nonsense, dear Lord, words fail me. It is possible to win a f i x e d match from 0-1 or 0-2 you know.

A Brazilian team coming nicely to the boil were thus kept out of the final, having easily nullified the Argentinian attack in the 0-0 second stage group match between the two.
