If you had the pick of any manager in the world, do you seriously think England would be any better in the Euros than if the FA tea lady picked the team from the usual suspects.

England team manager perhaps the most over-rated job in sport next to the Ryder Cup captain.

When people realise that whichever overpaid idiot is the manager, that's not the reason why England underperform in every single tournament they play.

how about TREVOR BROOKING...

hes already employed by the FA...hes probably a yes man, which they like...he knows international football well enough...and hes sure to have been around the england set up...

and he would probably get the support of the public, who realise that for this tournament, he will be on a hiding to nothing...

if he did well, he may well come out of it as an unexpected hero

Gus Hiddinck is far and away the best available candidate for an underachieving team in a big tournament.

Got South Korea to the semis of a WC
Got the Socceroos ahead of Croatia to the quarters where they were cheated at the death by the eventual winners.
Gout Russia to the Semis of the EC
but Fecked up gloriously with Turkey of late (???)

Your obsession with an English manager will probably count him out but Gus is the best available man.

losing capello will prove to be a disaster for england
are you all forgetting how bad you were before he arrived.
next manager mike bassett for all the difference it will make.
Report tuckyboy February 9, 2012 9:39 AM GMT
It may not make much of a difference now longchamps, but it will in two or three years' time when we are able to select from the crop of youngsters which is coming through now who have been properly coached throughout their youth.

To say that losing Capello will prove to be a disaster for England is also a bit ridiculous. One can only assume you were too absorbed in your own country's farcical SA 2010 to notice how abjectly England performed the only time Capello had the chance to lead them at a major tournament.

Report tuckyboy February 9, 2012 9:47 AM GMT
Ah, I assumed from the tone of his post and his name that longchamps may be a Frenchie, but I should have known such inferiority-fuelled bitterness could equally have come from one of our Caledonian brothers.

We have had several customer queries in relation to the above since the resignation of Fabio Capello yesterday evening.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the terms, duration and nature of any appointment, we have decided to wait until after the FA media conference, which is scheduled for midday (UK time) today, before loading a market. Subject to what emerges from that media conference, we anticipate activating a market shortly after it concludes.

Thank you for your patience.
