Yes, there are gloryhunters in the capital - the south ,too - who support the likes of ManU , but these people are just a very small minority , hardly the norm ,so please spare us the generalisation that everyone down here supports northern teams   . In fact , while I'm here , for many of us , southerners who support northern clubs are the lowest of the low , the **** on your shoes.

And , freddiek , true cockneys are more likely to support Arsenal : it's closer to Bow Bells ( off Cheapside ).

The most annoying thing is when you're out somewhere and you see someone wearing the shirt of say United or Liverpool, and you know at that precise moment they're actually playing live on sky. So not only do these mugs not go to games, they don't even watch them when they're on tv!!

I'm from Salford but lived in Edgware in North London for a while.

The amount of southerners 'supporting' northern teams is ridiculous and laughable. I've lived in Newcastle and Sheffield as well as Manchester and you go to any of them places you NEVER see a football shirt from outside the local area. Worst you'll see is the odd Blackburn/Bolton shirt in Manchester.

I know plenty who go all over watching both clubs, who have Wigan accents but the pile of sh1tehawks in the orange house etc watching 'their' team in those replica tops...then cheering as Latics get beat, should be culled.

the ones who get me are the ones who had no particular allegience but attached themselves to a successfull club the older ones are lpool fans, the more recent are man u, solely to have an interest when it was on in the pub, thus enabling them to celebrate goals with unmitigated glee. and laud it over "local" fans.

Yes, a Cockney (or Mockney even as they are sometimes known ) is regarded as a 'working class' or 'lower working class person'  from the Home counties.

Herts,Bucks,Surrey,Greater London,Kent,Sussex and most of Essex - the old East End is indeed mostly comprised of non Cockneys.

They speak loud and dress loud , wear football shirts at an advanced age , have shaved heads and wear shiny appendage .

They all drive white vans or know someone with a white van. They were all aspiring night club bouncers in their prime .

Some have migrated to more rural parts of late - Suffolk, Berks, Hants etc

Scanned this thread and having lived in these areas for virtually my entire life, northern teams, although supported, are not as common as people make out. There are a lot of Irish (or of Irish parents) in London who usually support Liverpool (generally), not forgetting a lot of northerners down here who surprisingly support northern teams. Since Arsenal starting hitting the heights, children of parents who were not into football usually chose the gooners (being the successful team of their era) just like the 60's child who sided with Spurs. Yes, northern team supporters are evident but on a very low ratio; in fact, there are just as many non-supporters as northern supporters in these parts.

What people fail to realise is that around one-fifth of the population live in London (give or take) and even a small percentage (less than 1%) makes a lot of northern supporters.

In the 80's if football wasn't really in your blood you tended to say you supported Liverpool, over the last 20 years or so its got 10 times worse and it's become Man Utd. The vast majority of these are weak willed, slightly odd people who migrate to these clubs for the same reason's people want to be with the "in" crowd.

Football has become very fashionable and these saddo's want to be associated with the most fashionable club's.

If you truly love football, you love your own club which is most commonly the one nearest to your roots and hate the rest. Unfortunately since the advent of the family friendly stadia, sky tv, big money(big headed) players, football, mainly at the top end has become so wishy washy and boring
that many of the true fans, myself included, have given up.

What i wouldn't give for terraces, roofless ends, players who had proper feelings and pride for the club they played for etc etc.

Never mind up with EPL (fkn hate that phrase)

I think you'll find that most "Cockneys" as you refer to them, do support their local teams.

Any southerners that support Man Utd and the Chelsea of the north generally tend to live in Surrey and the like, and are therefore generally not "Cockneys".

Neither are most people down south, i'm sure you have to be born within the chimes of the Bow Bells.

However, it's like saying anyone from "Up North" is a Geordie.

Its incorrect, and very narrow minded.
Report Coachbuster February 7, 2012 7:39 PM GMT
Its northerners who brought about the term if you like .

Aspro is correct when he talks about numbers around London - It's mainly because the home counties (cockney/mockney) accent is prominent in the south /south east.

In the north there are varying cut off's to discriminate ( in dialect) - Manchester,Liverpool,Leeds,Newcastle ,Nottingham accents are all very different .
Now pick  one  from Dover and Cambridge - 120 miles apart - same accent

Most of East London (inc Walthamstow) developed strong Cockney accents back in my day, Hackney moreso. Bow, Bethnal Green, Whitechapel etc were probably the strongest before our time but it developed to the point where even south Londoners sounded Cockney. I can reason with northerners seeing London, as a whole, being Cockney and even Essex these days, although the latter is due to most Cockneys moving out that way.

It's a mute point these days because Cockney, in and around these same areas, is dying and being replaced by what they now term 'Urban'
