Unbelievable stuff from him today. As a neutral football supporter with no financial involvement in the game. I cannot believe what I saw. If he is England's best referee then God help the rest of them, he totally screwed one team out of that game. Should have been 4 penalties

Nobody used to slate a referee 30/40 years ago like they do today. Why do people think this is?My thoughts are TV is to blame scrutinising every decision. You dont hear about bad decisions in the lower divisions but they probably occur

Howard Webb on the payroll, David Gill on the F.A Board, Fergie running the F.A, cronies in the media, Man U should be done for racketeering. Only two CL titles is a truer reflection of Fergie's legacy than umpteen PL championships.

Well, Webb has been officially approved by Fergie, while Atkinson remains banned by the Ogre. Clattenburk was unwilling to retrospectively red card Rooney last season because he would have gone on the banned list. We know who run tings, dont we?

im a man u fan i have 2 admit howard webb has gave us a few games down the years thats for sure the 2nd pen today was a dive i thought that was pretty clear to see 2 every1 but on the other hand i thought cahill was a foul and he should have gone for that last man but the fact in the hole primer league not just howard webb who had a shocking game today that the standard off refs has got worse some of the decsions are beyond me and laughable i think need 2 sit them all down and say look if u get so many decsons wrong ur suspened maybe that mite concentrate more becoz at the moment its a joke for all football fans getting stiffed left right and centre ow and the diving is getting worse there has 2 be 10 15 dives a game should be looked at every dive should be a booking either during the game or after when the game is assed everyelse thoughts

Fantastic half time motivational talk from Fergie. Howard Webb played a blinder in the 2nd half.
Report falkirk1 • February 5, 2012 8:24 PM GMT
Agree with you about the diving it's getting worse. johnsons yesterday against fulham, wellbeck today and david luiz's at the end of the game to win a free kick that nearly won the game for chelsea. People have got to remember ref's only have a split decision to make up their mind's and if player's keep on doing this no wonder they get some decision's wrong, I wouldn't do their job and I don't think a lot of people on here would.

Report thelatarps • February 5, 2012 8:42 PM GMT
I honestly believe EPL refs must have had a dictat telling them to let the game flow
ie dont give fouls
The USP of the EPL is fast paced action after all

THus you get inconsistent performances such as the one from mr webb today

You have to say that of all the teams in the EPL Man Utd have worked this out the best

The old mourinho chelsea knew this, not sure AVB does

If I were a ref in the EPL I would avoid all controversy by awarding anything remotely approaching a foul and not giving a pen unless the keeper mowed down the centre forward with a kalashnikov
But then we would be living in a very boring world would we not
La Liga anyone?

You Chelsea can bame the referee as much as you like, the fact is if that £50m Torres had of scored in 78th minute that would have been 4-2 and game over.
Referees are such easy targets and fans tend not to look at their own teams mistakes

Never thought a ref of his standing capitulate to the cheating that Man Utd bring to the Premiership. They (Utd) would make the tumbling acts in the Moscow state circus envious. It will be a sad day if they win another Prem title this way. They seem to have an abundance of players that shall we say seem to find it easier to lose their feet rather than staying on them.
Report Poppydog. • February 6, 2012 12:13 PM GMT
22 players constantly trying to cheat you into decisions
2 managers on the touchline pressurizing the world, into you losing your job

Impossible, just impossible
Full sympathy for all referees these days
Report jon b • February 6, 2012 1:38 PM GMT
not all players try to cheat but in principal totally agree with poppydog and they get one look and one angle to get it right not half a dozen different ones in slow motion ,thankless task for any individual
Report the dza • February 6, 2012 1:47 PM GMT
I think some of the refs are poor, but the FA/FIFA really need to update the way the game is officiated. It's time for video refs and an appeals system similar to Tennis/Cricket. Too many big calls get shown to be incorrect by a TV replay that takes 30secs-1min to view the incident from every angle, in slow motion.

Couple that with goal-line technology, and a proper panel (seperate from referees) that deals with retrospective punishment for cheats (divers and violent tackles etc.) and we'd go a long way to having the game officiated to a 21st century standard.
Report jason-dodd • February 6, 2012 1:59 PM GMT
Not sure about the video technology dza - would there be less disagreements? You don't see many challenges that everyone agrees with, after a replay.

I agree with your other suggestions though.
Report the dza • February 6, 2012 2:12 PM GMT
Perhaps Jason, but if a Video ref took a look at a challenge and couldn't make a definitive call on it, then he'd just have to give no foul and play on. Manager's might still cry, but they couldn't really argue if a call can't easily made via replay.
Report jason-dodd • February 6, 2012 2:13 PM GMT
Maybe - but don't you think we'd have to stop 15-20 times a game?
Report the dza • February 6, 2012 2:20 PM GMT
That's why I'd use an appeals ssytem. 2 appeals per side -- if you are correct in appealing, you retain the 2 appeals. If incorrect, you lose one.

Probably have to be coupled with some sort of 'incident timeframe' whereby an appeal could only be used within, say, 90 seconds of an incident occuring. So yesterday for example, Chelsea might have scored off that free-kick where Luiz took a dive. The goal goes in, Utd appeal -- if it doesn't, they might save the appeal for another time.

All penalties given would be automatically reviewed and not subject to the appeal system -- this is because there is always a delay between the penalty being given and the actual taking of the kick. during that time, the incident can be replayed again and again until a decision can be given (or not).

Appeals would come into play if a team thinks they should have had a penalty but did not get it -- and that's why the number of appeals would be limited. If there is no penalty, then the team loses one of their appeals, meaning that they would have to be selective in when to use them. Which would make the players involved more honest ie better not dive as I'll look a c**t on the replay and lose my team an appeal.

I'm sure much smarter people than me could work out a better system. Something has to change though. It's ridiculous not to at least use some technology.
Report jason-dodd • February 6, 2012 2:27 PM GMT
Maybe I'm just being a dinosaur in not wanting it, but it feels to me like it wouldn't work because we're not dealing with clear cut decisions, it's all about opinions.
Report the dza • February 6, 2012 2:37 PM GMT
If it's ambiguous after a plethora of replays, then it can't be judged a foul imo. The problem is that too many decisions that aren't clear cut are being given as stonewall. That's what the technology would solve, in my view.

We'll never get a perfect system of officiating, but we could get one that is much better.
Report mexicano • February 6, 2012 2:40 PM GMT
it seems to me that we could take a lead from the nfl.

teams allowed a certain number of challenges.

if on review there's no clear cut mistake they stick to the ruling on the field,
Report the dza • February 6, 2012 2:45 PM GMT
Something like that, Mex.

Care would have to be taken not to disrupt the flow of the game too much, but I think something could be worked in because of the delays contentious decisions tend to cause; see how long it takes for a penalty to be taken from when the decision was given, or the hold-ups caused by players surrounding the ref etc.
