I know many toon fans think 10th would be a good season. Some even think they can't 'rest' until we mathematically escape relegation.
Others are being laughed at because they say we will get into Europe.  Everyone andf I mean everyone (including Pards if his interviews are anything to go by) thinks Newcastle are not a top 4 side never mind a serious title challenger.

The same ones think Arsenal, Liverpool and even spurs have a shout at it but mention Newcastle and its bouts of laughter.

The same Newcastle who has played 5 out of the so called top 8 which means only 2 top 8 teams haven't been played yet.

The same Newcastle who have the tightest defence in the league even after playing these teams.

The same Newcastle who have only lost 1 of these games and given a decent ref would have come away with a point there too.  A team which mauled the current champions 6-1 but couldn't do it to us.

As for Man Utd they found like everyopne else that you just can't score against us and if we had got the penalty we deserved we would have actually won it.   Man Utd are no mugs, they played very very well, probably better than they have all season but still needed a fluke to score.

Arsenal couldn't score against us either.

Spurs were lucky to get a point.  Very very lucky.  They scored two world class goals.  Two goals you would be lucky to see half a dozen times in a whole year never mind in one game.  They were bang on form too.

This is the same Newcastle who have had a bad run of injuries and on many occassions fielded a weakened team.

I am not for one second saying we will win the title btw but logically if you count the likes of spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea then you discount Newcastle at your peril.

My advice, keep laying Newcastles opposition no matter who they are and let the mugs continue to give us superb betting odds.

Its not even December yet. Please see the many previous examples of a team going on a good early run. The likes of Blackpool and Hull in the last few seasons.

Newcastle will not be considered on a par with the likes of Spurs, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea by anyone yet. And rightly so.
Report funlovingexpress November 30, 2011 12:07 PM GMT
Your the mackem Donny!

The teams you mentioned on their 'early runs' didn't have the best defensive record in the EPL after playing 5 out of the seven top teams.

We are on a par with spurs and Arsenal because neither team could beat us.  They both tried and failed.

Liverpool and Chelsea have not played us yet but we are higher in the league than them so as we speak they are not on a par with us.

Keep laughing but answer me this?

Did Man Utd beat us at the Old Trafford fortress?
Could spurs beat us?
Could Arsenal?
How about Everton?
What about the nitty gritty teams, the teams that often turn over top teams, teams like Stoke City?  Did they beat us?
What about the hard fought games like a Derby game, always an upset or two in Derby games, did the mackems win?

Spurs have had a very easy run in so far.  When they have played quality they have been destroyed with the exception of a half strength Arsenal.  Man city scored 5 past them, they scored 6 past man utd but could only manage 3 against the best defence in the EPL.

Out of the 5 top 8 teams they have played they have won 2, drew 1 and lost 2.  Newcastle have only lost 1.
Spurs also struggled to get a point against Stoke.

Liverpool Have had a tough run in but have done well against many of the top teams.  The exception is Spurs but they did have 2 players sent off so its hardly surprising.  Liverpool are the reason that spurs won't finish top 4 and tbh are the more likely of the outsiders to sustain a challenge.  They btw, just like Newcastle beat Stoke.

Chelsea have had the easiest run in out of the lot and apart from Everton have failed to beat a top 8 team this season.  In comparison to Newcastle who have had one of the toughest run ins out of the lot and yet still have only lost 1 game.

A game which they should have had a point btw.

Newcastle have also often fielded a weaker team so it shows they have a cracking squad too.

Keep laughing, I'll keep laying the opp, you keep betting on them and I'm happy. KerchingLaugh

It'll be a cracking game Figjam thats for sure but your record against the top teams isn't that good so it should be an easy win for the toon.

Unless we do a liverpool and get 2 players sent off that is.

Lets face it, you might get to see cracking games every week but you haven't really played anyone yet and when you have and the opposition have 11 players, you have struggled most of the time.

I can't believe you see goals like the ones you scored against us every week.  You may see quality ones week in and week out but they were very very special.  You couldn't break down the defence so you pulled two peaches from in front of the defence.  I can't see you doing that again.
I will stick my neck out and say you won't win.  You may get a lucky draw but chances are you will lose.

Don't get me wrong, you will have more possession, more corners and more shots but not more goals.

I will also stick my neck out and categorically state that we will beat Chelsea.  This is a very winnable game.  Chelsea have struggled against all quality opposition this season and this weekend will be no different.

I will also categorically state that even after we have beat them we will still be laughed at for having the audacity to be in 3rd or 4th place and will still get the comments about our bubble bursting.

It is January where we will struggle and not before.
Report FIGJAM November 30, 2011 12:58 PM GMT

Fle- It would of course help if you get your facts right. We have yet to play Stoke in the prem, however we drew 0-0 in the CC at Stoke and lost on pens.
Fyi we also played our reserves that night.
Report funlovingexpress November 30, 2011 1:10 PM GMT
Si-K, it is not a question of being humbled.  For years we had a poor defence or a non existant midfield.  Most expected top 4 under the likes of Sir Bob but any higher would have been a bonus because of our defence.

I loved Sir Bobs teams and I kid you not when I say that this team is better than any he fielded.  The only negative is up front.  We have Ba but really need someone prolific to go alongside him.  Jermain Defoe would make us unbeatable IMO because the contrasting styles would suit us so much.

Who knows though, the French lad we are getting in January might be the answer.

Our defence is better than Sir Bobs, as is our midfield and he had a cracking midfield.   IMO we have also got something now that we haven't had in years and that is a commanding Keeper.

This team is good.  Very good in fact.  Yes you might not have heard of many of them before they arrived but most were used to winning titles with their previous clubs as well as being the clubs main stars.

January is our worry because the nucleus of the side could be away for 6 weeks.

But as we stand today we are there on merit.  Top 4 is achievable as long as we don't lose to many points in January.   Either way I am happy.  10th and I would still be happy because I get to watch a very very good team which oozes quality from front to back.
Report funlovingexpress November 30, 2011 1:13 PM GMT
At the end of the day you sent out a team which you thought could win it and you didn't.  We did the same when we got knocked out of the CC and if I am honest it has proved a blessing.  It might have been better for you if you had lost too.
Report LeoOnAHigh November 30, 2011 1:25 PM GMT
You're doing well but let's not get carried away there is one player carrying your team.

Krul.
Report funlovingexpress November 30, 2011 1:34 PM GMT
Krul is top notch but many would say it is Collo or tiote which carries the team.  Others would argue that it is instead our midfield maestro which carves teams at will, others still that it is the work the wingers put in.

What I do know however is that if we had fielded a full strength team against Man Utd we might have given them a better game.

I also know that I wouldn't swap Collo or Tiote for amny other centre half/midfielder in the country.  Chelsea used to have a player called Makele and Tiote is a young version of him and I rated Makele very very highly.

I never said we would win the title nor did I mention the FA cup.   What I did say is that this side is very very good and we are there on merit even though we have had the hardest run in (with the possible exception of Liverpool)to be dismissed so lightly.

It would be one thing if week after week we had fielded our best 11 and/or had shipped goals for fun like the likes of blackpool and Hull in previous years, then I might have tended to agree.

The reality is though that even with one of the hardest run ins in many a year we have the best defensive record in the league which is even more remarkable when you consider that we have had injury after injury and have rarely fielded our best team.  To me, only a fool would dismiss that so lightly.

Chairman's M.O.

Alan Pardew has had to admit for the second Sunday in succession, that he cannot rule out some January moves away from St. James’ Park of some of Newcastle’s players:

“You’re talking about Newcastle United – nothing is certain here,” “January is a horrible time. I don’t think there’s a Premier League manager, if he was honest with himself, who enjoys that period.”

Newcastle won't sell.  They never sell their best players.  In the past Ashley has been very shrewd and has got top money for players who wouldn't get a game for us.  All the players that went in the summer and last January were replaced by better players and that is what successful teams do.

IMO there are no better prospects than Krul so he won't go.  Ironically Newcastle do have a player who could replace him on their books but hes not proven within the EPL.  Most though would concede that Krul is better than Forster and so he won't be going anywhere.  BTW I know De Geay is rated highly as a propect but its an opinion and I firmly believe Krul shades it and that Forster is equal to De Geay.

One of the days we will get stuffed as our defence is not anywhere near the best or joint best in the Premiership, Krul has been the difference, and brilliant blocks by S Tyalor of course.

We will be lucky to finish in the top 7 imo.

A sensible point of vieew.

S Taylor gave the goal away and made two good blocks.  Collo made 3 as did R Taylor and simpson just seemed to block everything.

Blinkered vision S Taylor fans or what?

The defence is a lot better than you give them credit for and yes I even include Newcastles own donkey in that LaughLaugh

Tiote has been the main miss and when hes back playing week in and week out the defense will tighten again.

To criticise the defence is purely ridiculous.  The way they hold the line and move off the ball is on a par if not better than any other defence in the country.

Yes you might argue there are better 'individual' defenders around but as a unit, which is all that counts, they are doing a tremendous job.  You would find it strange but I would argue that if Newcastle were to buy a fully fit Ledley king (who I rate tremendously) it might actually detract from the defence not improve it.

its 13 and that is a third of the season gone and already most of the so called top 8 teams who everyone believes are vastly superior have been played.
This team is a cracking team and better than Sir Bobs IMO and no one would have batted an eyelid if Sir Bob said he expected 4th.  Saying that tiger Tiger would probably think Sir Bob was drunk too.

People should give credit where it is due and not dismiss it just because we are Newcastle United.  I am especially surprised because it is a betting forum  and surely when folk keep betting against the toon surely a penny must drop at some time that their bank balances are getting lighter and lighter and all because they believe hype and not results.

January is the crunch time for us because of the African paper cup. It is then when all the knockers will come back and say I told you so but they still won't look at the facts.  You know, daft stuff like a good main part of the team is missing.

If Newcastle have a bad run in January the posts and press will start on about the bubble being burst
Then shock horror, when those players return and Newcastle again resort to going on yet another unbeaten run they will not understand how their bank balances keep dwindling.

February will have post after post about how lucky the toon was etc, etc, march the same.  If at the end of the season Newcastle finish 7th they will all pat themselves on the back saying I told you so or in many cases "they did better than I expected".

It will escape all of them that when the toon has the players available they are a hard bunch to beat becauise they will be to busy patting themselves on the back.

Then no doubt you will see the same guys in pre season posting how they lost a packet last season and that many of the results were strange LaughLaughLaugh
