Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara has expressed his delight with his contract extension and is eager to prove his worth in the 2011-12 campaign.
Thiago ended speculation over his future on Wednesday when he signed a new deal with the Catalan giants until the summer of 2015, despite supposed interest from clubs such as Roma and Villarreal.

He told the club's official website: "It's a dream to continue with this team and this club. I am really happy. Now It’s time to share it with my family. I never thought about leaving. I’ve always wanted to be here.
"The club has already done everything for me. They’ve trained me, I’ve come up through the youth ranks, they trusted me to play last season in the first team, and they offered to renew my contract. Now it’s up to me to prove that I can play for Barcelona and help the team to stay at the top."

Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara claims he could be tempted away from Camp Nou.

The highly-rated midfielder helped Spain's U21 side to European Championship glory on Saturday, with his spectacular 40-yard strike putting the seal on a 2-0 victory over Switzerland.

He can now turn his attention back to domestic action and a potentially pivotal 2011/12 campaign in Catalunya.

Although he is considered to be a top talent by the Barca coaching team, Thiago has been forced to bide his time on the bench for long periods since joining the first-team fold.

At just 20 years of age he has plenty of time to force his way through, but it remains to be seen whether he is prepared to be that patient.

Thiago does not hide the fact that he is ambitious and admits that he would be willing to leave Barca for the good of his career.

"I would be lying if I said that my dream is to succeed at Barca," he said.

"My dream is to succeed in football. I want to be a player who people remember for ever."

Report sintonian August 31, 2011 9:13 AM BST
Mmm.

Thiago was very impressive the other night. In fact, pretty much the whole side were, Sanchez, Fabregas, and ofcourse Messi.

As for the Wilshere comparison.. he is equally as talented. I think the performances of Nasri at the weekend and Cesc also have shown just how much easier it is for them to perform when playing alongside players of equal ability.

If you took Thiago Alcantara out of the Barcelona  midfield set-up and stuck him in the Arsenal one, alongside the likes of Rosicky and Arshavin, then he wouldn't look half the player he does at Barca.

Believe me, Wilshere is everybit as talented as Alcantara. Thats a fact.

Report Phil Lynott July 30, 2012 12:39 AM BST
True, although I rate Adrián.

Don't think the trio of Koke, Martínez and Isco worked - Ander and Thiago together ahead of Javi M looked much more suited last summer. Thiago was the key player back then so it's no surprise that even the likes of Neymar have been saying about what a loss he is to the tournament.
Report Biscuit1979 July 30, 2012 12:57 AM BST
I can't work out why Spain didn't pick a striker like Llorente or Soldado as an overage player, seemed to be the only area of the side they're lacking in. Soldado didn't even go to the Euro's so he'd have surely been up for it

Agree that Thiago is a huge loss though.
Report Phil Lynott July 30, 2012 1:33 AM BST
Not that I agree completely with the reasoning, but they decided to "reward" Martínez, Mata and Adrián with places as the over-23 players because they helped Spain to qualify for the Olympics (through winning last years u21 Euros)

Have you never heard of the 0-11-0 formation???!!!
Report Phil Lynott July 14, 2013 10:18 PM BST
He never actually said anything about wanting to leave the club, nor his reasons. That's all come from speculation based on the reason the clause was activated. I'd say the poor management by Vilanova was the main factor though, the lack of faith he had in Thiago(and other youth players) was disgraceful - for example playing Xavi on painkillers AFTER the league was won instead of playing Thiago.

As for where he fits in, aye that's a tough one alright. I'd guess Martínez will be moved to centre back seeing as Pep wanted him to play there when he tried to sign him for Barcelona. Guess the rest depends on formation, could be Schweinsteiger, Kroos and Thiago in the centre with Ribéry, Götze and Müller upfront? Not sure.
Report Tucho July 15, 2013 11:21 AM BST
Why are Barca selling Thiago to the team that just destroyed them in the Champions League? Bayern are Barca's biggest threat in Europe for the next few seasons. Asking for trouble imo.
Report Phil Lynott July 15, 2013 6:04 PM BST
They had no choice, he had a release clause (Bayern paid more than it because it was beneficial to both clubs but either way Barcelona had no say). The stupid thing though was that Vilanova didn't care, or know, about the clause and criminally underused him so his buyout clause lowered from €90m to €30m.

Certainly is a big call but I definitely agree that it's suicide from Barcelona.

He's pretty close to Xavi's current level already and he'll definitely overtake him within the next season or so, but being better than Xavi or Iniesta at their peaks is no easy task. Still think he's got a better chance of reaching their level than any other midfielder in the world though.
