Fulham are closing in on naming Mark Hughes as their new manager.

The Cottagers are without a boss as they prepare for the new season after Roy Hodgson's move to Liverpool earlier in the summer.

They suffered a major blow in their bid to replace him with Martin Jol's decision to eventually stay with Ajax over a return to the Barclays Premier League.

But Fulham are now close to unveiling Hughes as their new man despite Sven Goran Eriksson's emergence as a contender

Hughes has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester City last year but is highly-rated in the game.

Fulham owner Mohammed Al Fayed is keen to sustain Fulham's progress after they went all the way to the Europa League final last season.

Hughes, who initially impressed at City after fine work at Blackburn, is keen to return to management and views Fulham as an ideal post.

However, with just over two weeks until the start of the season, he will have to work quickly in the transfer market if he wants to rebuild their squad.

Another late contender for the post is Roberto Donadoni. He guided Italy to the Euro 2008 quarter-finals but is looking for work after being sacked by Napoli in October.

God help Fulham if any of there players or staff refuse to change their nationality to Welsh and renounce their religion and join the Church of The Perm Haired, Leek Eating Messiah.

If they are willing to conform to these conditions they will soon find themselves being fingered by the press as b@stards who are letting the club down and hindering "the best young British manager."

Saying all that though, it will make a nice change for Fulham fans. Nearly three seasons of an honest, frank and sporting gentleman in charge must be a bit boring. The constant stream of excuses and self promotion will make a nice contrast.

Best thing we did was elbowing that red b'td. Never forgiven him for that scissor kick goal when we beat then 5-1 at Maine Rd. Would have been even better 5-0.

Surely @ 1.40 this must be based on more than a newspaper article. For him to go odds on they must be in talks
