Standout bet in tomorrow's Scottish Challenge Cup is Ayr United. They face an Airdrie side who've had to start again in the summer after releasing their entire squad due to financial constraints. Times are so hard that Airdrie only have 2 recognised pros on their books - the rest are kids from their youth teams.
Ayr are hardly going places either, but they've been steadily building a half decent squad over the summer, which includes 3 of Airdrie's best players who'll make their debuts against their old side tomorrow. Oh yeah, and the game has been moved from Airdrie's ground because their new pitch isn't ready, so they won't even have home advantage.
No matter which way you look at this game, the 2.2 about Ayr is massive. I wouldn't get carried away with the stakes because this competition is notorious for throwing up dodgy results, but the feeling among Ayr fans is unanimous - if they can't beat this Airdrie team they're in a bad way.
Personally I would avoid backing Ayr. We have Dean Keenan suspended as he got sent off in a friendly last Saturday. Steven McKeown is rated as doubtful due to illness. Bobby Donnelly is apparently injured. This would mean an 18 year old who has never played a competitive game for the Ayr 1st team will start. Also, Brian Reid hates this competition. Two seasons ago we were up 1-0 at East Stirling in stoppage time and threw the game, last sason before we played Albion Rovers at home Reid admitted he was just treating it as a friendly, he certainly stuck to his word and we got beaten 2-0. I know Airdrie have their problems etc and are not actually playing at home but I would avoid the game. If I had to bet on the game I would back a draw.

Gav, totally agree that Ayr haven't been fond of this competition in the past. But hey, who is? 99 per cent of teams treat it as an extension of pre-season. Point about this bet is you simply can't ignore anyone at 2.2 against Airdrie. There was talk not so long ago they might have to forfeit the game because they didn't have enough players. They're in dire straights. As I say, I wouldn't go mad on the stakes because it's the Challenge Cup after all, but it looks real value to me.

not sure i'd class Alloa as a "neutral" venue though, (although i agree it gives ayr an advantage) it's even harder for the ayr supporters to get to than airdrie.
if i wanted to be really pedandic (and i do) i'd say Love St. would be as closest you could get to a "neutral" venue for this fixture as you could find.
