Can someone explain why photos posted are changing to thumbnail icons within hours/days?

Many times I've uploaded a photo and posted it as a reply on a topic and have seen it clearly displayed.

I go back to the same topic hours/days/weeks/months later and my photo has been replaced by a thumbnail icon.

This is happening more and more often.

Can anyone, developer or otherwise, please tell me why this might be happening?
