Recording live prices for playback, how?

I was wondering if anyone might know the best way to code an app that would that would save API live prices in a file format that could then be replayed in real time when desired. I would use this to test betting strategies. I know there is a commercial offering called "Timemachine" but I want my own datasets.  Any info most appreciated, thank you.
