Jose de Sousa
Euro Tour champ De Sousa believes TV success beckons
Jose de Sousa is targeting success in TV events in the rest of the year after picking up his first European Tour title in Sindelfingen on Sunday.

The Portuguese number one was a popular winner at the Glaspalast as he lifted the European Darts Grand Prix title, his first on stage in the PDC, after averaging 105.79 in an 8-4 defeat of world number one Michael van Gerwen in the final.

Since arriving on the tour in 2019, De Sousa's quiet charisma and unique playing style has endeared him to darts fans and with three PDC titles to his name over the last 18 months, the 46-year-old believes he is a contender for big titles.

"It's unbelievable, really emotional. It's my biggest title and I'm very, very happy," said De Sousa, who also defeated world number two and reigning champion Ian White across the weekend.

"To do this in one year is a dream. To win any PDC title is a dream because it's so, so difficult.

"Of course it's different to win a title in front of a crowd, and I am happy to share this moment with the fans who have been amazing all weekend.

"This title is not just for me but for all the people who support me, my management and my family."

De Sousa is part of the same management stable as newly-crowned Premier League champion Glen Durrant, and De Sousa revealed he offered words of advice and encouragement prior to the final.

"He [Durrant] just said stay calm, do your job, play your game. He said 'you are the best player in the world at this moment.'

"I didn't believe that but now I believe that!"

The Madrid-based player has qualified for the European Championship, which will begin later in October, and has moved into a provisional qualifying place for a Grand Slam of Darts debut in November.

"I think I can do anything right now, it doesn't matter who I play against. I know I can do it and I have so much confidence in my game."

De Sousa will be back in action this weekend at the International Darts Open in Riesa, which will be played from Friday to Sunday.
