Just the two stages in the Alps this time although some big climbs

This year you've got Galibier from the north side with descent to Serre Chevalier on the Wednesday and d'Izoard summit finish from the south side on the Thursday.  These are both passes rather than ski resorts so not a lot up there.  I saw the 2011 Galibier finish (the Andy Schleck solo) which was the other side - we camped at about 2300m and it was freezing at night - wouldn't fancy that again.  Col d'Izoard hasn't been used as a summit finish before.  The Tour summit finishes are normally ski resorts where you've got the facilities

The local hotels will be taken up by the Tour so you're likely to be staying some distance away.  That probably means somewhere other than Briancon and Serre Chevalier.  Summit finishes / popular climbs tend be closed to traffic from the previous evening once there is nowhere left to park - usually some time between 4pm and 8pm. Certainly for d'Izoard, not sure about Galibier. Hence most of the spectators who aren't staying on the mountain the night before will ride up on the morning of the stage

There is a small cafe/gift shop at the top but if i remember rightly they shut on Thursdays.

If you Intend to watch the Galibier and Izoard stage then would suggest staying at Les Deux Alpes. Its a summer as well as Winter resort so plenty going on with plenty of hotels and restaurants etc.... From L2A you can ride to the Galibier...its a nice rode up the Col'D Lauteret and either watch them descend the Galibier or keep riding up the South side to watch them summit. For the Izoard I would suggest you drive to Briancon and ride up to the Izoard summit (Beautiful climb .Although I have ridden La Marmotte a couple of times I would describe myself as a distinctly average cyclist at best who enjoys a beverage along the way.... so would say all of the above rides are easily manageable and it is so much easier to watch Le Tour on bike than car.... they close the roads very early to cars on race days.
