Paris - Nice (2.UWT)

Route

Paris-Nice, the Race to the Sun, is the first of the World Tour European stage races of the season. It can determine the pecking order of stage racers going into the Grand Tours later in the season, but Paris-Nice is a cherished prize in its own right, won by the biggest names in the sport. Coming in the season as it does, this can be a race that can be greatly affected by the weather, especially when we go into the high mountains. This year the route differs from the traditional Col d'Eze mountain TT finish. We have a prologue to start, with a mountqin finish on Stage 6 and a short final stage next Sunday that ends with a descent off Col d'Eze into Nice and could prove very exciting if the GC is still close.

Richie Porte defends his trophy in BMC colours having won it for the second time in three years for SKy in 2015. Geraint Thomas lines up against his old team mate as he attempts to prove he has what it takes to be a Grant Tour contender. Alberto Contador, himself a 2-time winner, will take them on for Tinkoff. After his strong showing in the Vuelta, Tom Dumoulin will hope to give Giant some much needed good news with a prologue win and a strong showing in the GC, and several top week long stage race contenders like Rui Costa, Romain Bardet and Simon Spilak will hope to add to their palmares with a win. There's a strong looking lineup from the sprinters as well, despite the world track champs. Kristoff, Greipel, Kittel, Bling, Demare, Bonifazio, Bouhanni and Lobato will be looking for stage wins, and Stages 1, 2 and 4 look likely to end in bunch finishes.

11/4 * CONTADOR Won this in 2007 and 2010. Only start this season was in the Algarve stage race, where on the mountaintop stage finish he won impressively from Aru and Pinot, but it wasn't enough to win on GC and he had to settle for 3rd on GC. Will build form slowly and lay down a furious attack on stage 5 to build his victory here. Deserving favourite. The class rider in the race. Must be treated with the utmost respect.

9/2 G THOMAS 5th here last year. Opened season in AUS without doing much, then won the GC at the Algarve. Will be tested to back up in the second mountain stage 6. Interesting proposition. Worthy of close consideration.

13/2 1/2* DUMOULIN 4th on GC at Oman was his only start this season, where he finished 4th on the mountain stage, showing excellent patience to not respond to the attacks rashly. One of the main contenders.

11/1 PORTE 2nd on GC in TDU, winning the queen -- Willunga Hill -- stage, then poor in Oman due to a repeat of his 'piriformis syndrome'. This has been his target, preceded with a two week training session in Monaco, however even though he has seen good kms so far in this early part of the season and raced well in this physical condition when winning here last year, he looks suspect. Also won here in 2013, however he will miss the Col d'Eze mountain TT, which has been removed from this year's edition. Wait to see.

11/1     GALLOPIN Going along nicely. 6th here last year when holding the leader's jersey into the final stage, 10th in 2014. Has trained well. Knows the route well. Not out of it. Take on trust.

18/1     HENAO First start here. Opened the season with an impressive 3rd on GC in TDU, then 2nd at COL Nationals RR. Appears to be coming into this at the right time. May pay to follow.

18/1 1/8* BARDET 14th here last year. Opened season with a 2nd on GC in Oman, then two top-10s and in contention in FRA hilly classics, last two starts. Looking to be the first FRA winner here in 19 years. Excellent value. Treat warily.

18/1 SPILAK 3rd here last year, 8th in 2014. Journeyman results in two FRA short stage races so far this season. Take on trust.

18/1 COSTA 4th here last year, 2nd in 2014. Opened season in Dubai for a 14th on GC, then 5th on GC in Oman. Not to be discounted easily.

28/1 KELDERMAN 13th here in 2014. Opened season in Andalusia for a 4th place finish on GC, however he is already finding excuses. Has the talent to win a race like this, so can be a frustrating proposition. Wait to see.

Good luck to all,
SP

Key Stages

Monday 7th March & Tuesday 8th March - Stages 1 & 2
These two flat stages should end in bunch sprints and we shouldn't see any time gaps, although looking at the weather we could well see some crosswinds so anyone with stage or outright aspirations will have to keep their wits about them.

Wednesday 9th March - Stage 3 (168km)
This is the first stage that could have a significant bearing on the outright winner. The finish on Mont Brouilly is nasty enough with 3km @ 7.7% and a final km at over 9%, but the stage itself will be very hard. The stage is only 168km long, which should ensure a decent pace. But it will be hard to control as there are 7 categorised climbs in total, with 6 of them coming in the last 90km. This early in the season we should see a number of dropped riders here. The peloton get a look at the finish 30km from the end of the stage but then do a loop round before coming back round to the finish and the final Cat 2 climb. It isn't possible to win the outright on this stage but it certainly is possible to lose it.

Thursday 10th March - Stage 4 (193.5km)
Although there is a Cat 2 climb, the Cote de Saint-Uze 30km from the finish, 2.8km @ 6.5%, and a couple of uncategorised climbs in the finale, this should come back together for a bunch sprint.

Friday 11th March - Stage 5 (198km)
With 5 categorised climbs, including up to Chalet Reynard on Ventoux there is plenty of climbing today but the final 20km are flat after two short steep Cat 2 climbs. We shouldn't see any big time gaps today in the outright but it will be interesting to see which sprinters can cling onto the group and fight out the finish.

Saturday 12th March - Stage 6 (177km)
7 climbs and an uphill finish at La Madonne d'Utelle. Although the final climb is fairly steady the preceding miles of climbing will make sure we have a fairly small group comming to the end and the final few hundred yard are above 10% meaning someone could go a long way towards winning outright by winning this stage and taking 10 bonus seconds.

Sunday 13th March - Stage 7 (141km)
This looks like a well designed route and this final stage could be explosive if we have a close GC. None of the 6 categorised climbs are in themselves that hard, but this is a short stage and should be taken at a fast pace. This will ensure its hard for the team in yellow to control. With a climb up the Col d'Eze ahead of a 16km descent into Nice to finish things off, bravery could be well rewarded here, and there's every chance the jersey could change hands on the final line.

I've taken Romain Bardet for the outright here. The young French rider has shown he has the nous and bottle to make the winning moves from small groups. He's a cracking climber, and a super descender. 25/1.

Betfair settled my Kristoff Stage 1 bet as a loser this morning. Interesting. What do they know...?

Today's stage has a few narrow "white roads" in the finale which should be quite a spectacle although not sure the pros will agree

Yeah two gravel sections towards the end. Apparently they are a bit more hazardous than Strade Bianche. There is also a short steep climb near the finish so it might not be as straightforward as the profile looks. Accordingly, I've backed Kristoff and Demare at 4/1 and 25/1. Just hope Betfair reinstate them as they've already settled them both as losers. Cry

Stuck a few cheeky each ways on as well in case this turns into a real grind. Bonifazio 50/1, Bevin 80/1, Terpstra 80/1, Theuns 125/1 and best of all big Stan Stannard 250/1. What's not to love about Stan today? Cold, wet, snowy, track roads near the end...could be a decent chance for him to stretch the legs off the front ahead of the big classics.

Nice call. Bouhanni must be thinking "anyone but Demare". Good that it split up in the wind before the gravel - made it a bit safer

Was cheering Theuns on for you MC, at 125/1 it would've been the biggest tip on this forum, I believe. Still, landing a 25/1 tip is a worthy consolation prize. Well done, another strong start to the season for you, although if I remember correctly (perhaps we should have a thread for big wins) you jagged Dennis at 50/1 in the TDU last season?

Interesting stage, but not in relation to the gravel sectors. I mean, the talk was all about the gravel sectors for this stage, however it was the cross winds which would've had the biggest impact on the GC in this race. I don't see the point of including such gravel sectors if there not going to cause a selection, and because there were only the two circuits it was a load of nonsense, I thought. Do it properly or don't do it at all. It felt nothing more than a novelty, and I hope they don't bother next time. It's not required when in this neck-of-the-woods with the open country causing cross winds.

Very good decision that by the commissars, imo. Don't see enough of it at the WT level.

I've missed the last few days and the start of Tirreno-Adriatico due to work commitments. Going to be watching the highlights today on catch up. Looks like this should be a sprint stage today, time for Kittel to open his account?
By:
SwingingPick
When: 10 Mar 16 17:16
No worries, MC.

Kittel is becoming a good lay proposition, admittedly the absence of any liquidity, whilst not surprising, is preventing a good return, though.

Contador has shown he is here to race, however i don't think we'll see it on stage 5 as I initially stated, but rather on stage 6. Dumoulin is the VL in the race over G who crashed today, on the last climb incidentally, lightly and not awkwardly, but nevertheless brought back into the race by his team without any lasting effects, it would appear. If it comes down to a grind on the mountaintop finish of stage 6, then I think Dumoulin can hold on. I don't think Bling can hold on in the Leader's Jersey, and I think G is not going as well as expected. Porte would need to pull out something special and it doesn't really suit him.

In conclusion; I'm topping up on Dumoulin on here at 5/1 with a Contador saver. Still have Bardet in green, but not excited by that at this point. Just on Dumoulin's performance in the Vuelta last year, there is nothing still to come here that should really pose an insurmountable obstacle for him, if anything the climbs really fit his expanding characteristics, although he is disadvantaged by there not being an ITT to conclude racing. In addition, I think a win here would really fit with his season and lay a solid foundation for the Giro. I mean, the team have not come here with major expectations and heaped pressure on Dumoulin, it just looks like it's developing into a relaxed if solid hit-out for him against some quality company, with a nice VL, and he actually has a decent team. 5/1 seems like good value.

Cheers,
SP

Had a stab at Gallopin at 33/1 for stage 5.
By:
SwingingPick
When: 11 Mar 16 07:28
No 33/1 available about Gallopin any longer, so have gone for Wellens at 50/1, Rui Costa 100/1, and Simon Yates at 80/1, with PP. And Zakarin at 40/1 with Lads. Costa a very big price for a stage like this, imo.

Good luck to all,

Great win that by Lutsenko, timed the attack very well. We were looking for the right type but he didn't enter my thoughts.

Very nice win indeed, and he can certainly climb so will be interesting if the Books bring him into calculations for tomorrow's "showdown" stage which will decide race honours -- so far not available in any of the markets. 33/1 would present me with no complications to include him as a saver. They will probably bring him in at 9/1, maybe 16/1, though.

Gallopin crashed early, weird breakaway for the majority, but the ride of this stage was Kristoff. He worked hard on the back of a KAT train to be brought back into the peloton, and he still looked to have good legs in the finale for 2nd, easily holding out Bling. Good signs for MSR that! Contador rode prominently, as did Dumoulin, but I think that stage was so fast and hard that perhaps it was too hard for this point of the season for a classics-style finish.

Tomorrow should be a cracking stage.

After TCS were sitting in behind SKY doing all the work and Contador jumped out to get sprint bonus seconds, I was convinced he was going to win the stage and take the Leader's Jersey. And this was confirmed when Majka punished the peloton with his pace-setting duties on the steep section with Contador sitting on comfortably. TGA must have been very grateful for SKY's work as it gave Dumoulin a comfortable ride, but evidently he is not there with his condition and whilst he nearly bridged to Contador group on the final climb, in much the same way as in Oman when he patiently rode back into contention, he spent himself by that effort and faded out badly in sight of the summit. +32 secs behind now requires a move which is not supported by the evidence and I think he can no longer win. I mean, he would need to attack near the top of the Col d'Eze, clear out, and then daredevil power-descend for 15kms to gain bonus stage win time and hold onto a 22 secs gap. Highly unlikely, so that project is toast!

Contador on the other hand will be livid after that loss, and being only +15 secs behind, really only requires a 10 sec gap on the descent to beat G. That however will be difficult to achieve given how strong SKY showed themselves to be, and whilst Contador has Majka, G showed he has Henao, who was unfailing and full devoted to G today, and the big reason why he pulled out such an impressive ride. However, G can be fragile when backing up on such terrain, so 1.) if TCS can assemble on the front of the peloton and pile on the pressure to give the peloton another hard ride as they did today, and 2.) if Contador can repeat his attacks of today near the top of the Col d'Eze tomorrow, then the evidence would suggest that Contador can crack G and open a gap near the top. Nevertheless, there are a lot of "ifs" required and Contador is not the best of descenders any longer, and whilst I would maintain my faith in a classy and cunning rider such as Contador with such a small gap and time on offer on the line, who admittedly was shown up by G today, I think SKY are strong enough to defend against TCS and keep G in the Leader's Jersey by the finale.

With the liquidity being the way it is in this market, my only viable option is to bank G, but that would require a price of evens, which is looking suspect.

Incidentally, Lutsenko was included in the market close to my forecast at 31/1, however he was 80/1 with the Books, so that was much closer to his true price given his performance out the back door.

Cheers,
SP

Good test for all.
Very impressed with Wellens. I think he has taken a massive step since his impressive Eneco Tour win last season. Looks like he won't get a start in MSR on Saturday, but instead he'll be spelled for the Ardennes, where after that climbing performance he'll be looking for a podium result.
