Stage 10 » Civitanova Marche › Forlì (200k)
After the rest day we have a very flat day that the sprinters will have marked out in their diaries with a very thick very red pen. There is nothing here for the climbers, GC guys and breakaway merchants. The only thing that will prevent this from being a bunch sprint finish is the potential for crosswinds on the coastal road or late crashes as we come into Forli. However the last 2km do contain some interesting features that could make positioning very important and this may not be as straightforward for the leadout trains as the Stage won by Greipel into Castiglione della Pescaia.

We start in the town of Civitanova Marche in the Marche region, at the mouth of the Chienti river and we move North East towards Ancona along the coastal road. We basically follow the coastal road all the way along the Adriatic, through Ancona, Pesaro and Rimini. We don't go quite as far as Ravenna, diverting away from the coast slightly at Rimini and follow the road to first Cesena and then Forli. There is one minor climb, the Cat 4 Monte di Bartolo, which is still 90+km from the finish of the stage. The last kilometres are largely straight and flat, with a small number of roundabouts and traffic dividers being the biggest danger to the peloton. The last 2km are somewhat challenging though. There is 1500m of paved section, a sharp right hand bend just before the Flamme Rouge as we turn onto Piazza Saffi and a bottleneck 200m later. At 500m there is a sharp left onto the finish straight of Viale Vittorio Veneto. Positioning throughout the last 2km may be crucial, and this is certainly a less straightforward finale that the finish to Stage 6. Forli has been a stage finish 8 times in the Giro, most recently when Robbie McEwan won a sprint in Stage 5 in 2006.

Greipel is probably about the price he should be today. There's a couple of squeeze points in the finale and anyone too far off the pace won't be winning today. Watching brief for me today.

A disater there for Porte, a mechanical with 4km to go!! Surprised a teammate just didnt do a quick bike swap with him?? Lost 47 secs and now 1.09 down on Contador and down to 4th in the gc behind Landa! That is a ig time loss and is probably more than he would gain in the TT. Just bad luck really but maybe could have been managed better?
