Yes, but nothing but cheerleading from the overdose of commentators. Great for England, but in terms of a competitive start, a total non event. Is the standard really high enough to allow 12 teams? Doesn't look like it. It can't get any worse than that, surely?

The standard is not great, although it has certainly improved over the years.
However some sides are totally out of their depth for sure.
But that won't stop the BBC shoving it down our throats and bigging it up , no doubt calling for Damehoods for the England side if they emerge victorious.

I watched a lot of the women's Ashes test a few years ago; Ecclestone was very good and the two Aussie spinners were excellent. I'll refrain from passing comment on the Sri Lankan bowlers except to say I would have fancied a bat !

Watching Scotland vs NZ this morning. Poor dismissal for McCol but as she walked off, I was thinking what a lonely and demoralising thing it must be to have to walk all the way back to the Pavilion with thousands of disapproving eyes watching.

The only way that standards can improve is by exposing lower ranked sides to the best. Many people could not see the point of having Durham in the County Champs or Italy in the 6 nations Rugby but they are steadily improving. Durham now one of the best county teams. Some no hope teams in the Football World Cup but few of them have given up more than 5 goals so far. Meanwhile Darcy Carter is now the leading run scorer of the entire tournament.

Sage, continually being hammered by much better teams does nobody any favours. Look at San Marino, Andorra and co in football for instance , no improvement in results after many years because they just don't have the players.
As far as Durham goes, they were one of the best Minor counties for many years and it had long been mooted that they could compete at county level. It was always going to take a few years for them to fully grow in to the First Class environment, in the early years they relied on a number of ex pros from other counties who had seen better days (Botham at the end of his career for instance, Graham Fowler, Jonathan Lewis, Wayne Larkins etc) and in the early 2000s they took advantage of the Kolpak ruling to have a number of overseas players. Together with bringing through home grown talent like Harmison, Brown, Collingwood etc this laid the foundations to their more recent success (mind you they are back in Division Two now alongside my county .
Durham's fairly rapid rise in the County game is a totally different scenario to more minor national teams getting thrashed in World Cups, Durham were able to bring in players from elsewhere, it goes without saying that you can't actually do that so easily at international level can you ?

Was at the game at Lords last night, England seemed sure a noise occurred, and video showed noise as ball passed bat.
Couldn't see any other reason for noise, so guess is it hit bat, but in between video frames, 1/50th of second.
Likely would have been a better game if they gave her not out and she seemed absolutely convinced she didn't hit ball.
Who'd be a video umpire.
£40 for seat in Compton stand, great stuff.
Any sport you improve by playing better players, gaining exposure to a higher level, maybe not boxing, lol

Thanks for reply yhtl, agree there "might" have been a noise, but the ball was nowhere near the bat, also the third umpire said as she was reviewing that there is a clear gap between bat and ball , but because of the spike she gave her out.Just watching as I was enjoying the game but that was a diabolical decision, any noise was nothing to do with ball or any part of her hitting the bat. Glad you enjoyed your evening, lovely place to be Lords on a pleasant evening

Clear gap on front on, but it's possible it nicked edge as run through showed bat did cross line of ball.
Like var for offside in football there is loads of action between frames that cameras don't catch.
Bowling at 60mph is 25 metres per second so on a camera at 50 pics per second ball can move 50cm from one frame to next.. Lots of room for doubt.

Teams improve by producing better players, not just getting beat time and again by better teams. Unless they get those better players, you can almost guarantee the same thing will happen again and again. In the meantime they need to gain some confidence by playing competitive games against sides at their level. The twelve teams was about pretending the game had moved forward far more than it actually had.
The competition has only produced one very good game.

Any good World Cup , whether it be football, cricket, rugby or tennis grand slams, having an upset or boilover is what makes it interesting. There is still a significant gap between your: Pakistan, Bangladesh, Netherlands, Scotland and Sri Lankas with your Australias. Cant be good for a World Cup having one-sided matches especially when they play Australia where its pretty much a foregone conclusion before you set foot.
The only way these teams get better is by playing the better sides on a regular basis. Ireland is one side that has showed gradual improvement in the womens game.
Id say a side like Bangladesh despite having a good tournament by their standards is still at least 10 years away from Australia on the global stage.

Playing better sides with same team won't produce better results until the team itself improves it's quality. Getting hammered doesn't improve confidence, it's just demoralising. Lots of these lesser teams have one or two players who can make a decent contribution. That just isn't enough. How they get that up to four or five is the question.
Bangladesh have remained the same for many years with the bowling constantly attempting to bail out the batting. They don't have the intent or physical ability to put big scores on the board.

The game is gradually moving from amateur to professional but only in a few countries. There is still an amateur flavour though. The English players actually smile occasionally. I am looking forward to this final today. Listening to BBC 5 live this morning, it was all about the world Cup football match that starts tomorrow morning. Nothing about England men beating India at cricket yesterday, the women's cricket world cup today or 6 big international Rugby matches. Listen to the home of sport and hear about the effect of altitude!

sage, like it or not the football World Cup is THE sporting event of the moment. The BBC have been covering the Women's T20 and they have full commentary on 5 live extra.
It does seem strange scheduling to have the final on the same day as the British Grand Prix, Wimbledon and of course England playing in the World Cup later. This was always going to mean the Women's T20 was overshadowed. It would have made more sense to play the tournament after the football had finished but of course we have the infernal Hundred effing up the summer as usual now.
They did cover the men's T20 yesterday, but it was a pretty meaningless affair as T20 matches are two a penny nowadays. so are hardly likely to be talking about it the next day. As for the Rugby, they covered all of the matches yesterday on 5 Live and i listened to full commentary on England getting drubbed .
It's unusual for me to stick up for the BBC, but there's only so much they can fit in to their schedules when you have so much sport going on at the same time

What's wrong with the Hundred? You get high class overseas mixing it with home players, and the BBC show a few games. I look forward to it. For me it's a million times more watchable than a bunch of beefcakes running after an odd shaped ball, and the terminally boring Formula 1.

England women outclassed today by the Aussies who are simply too good for the others and have been for ages now. Not sure it will change any time soon. You either have the players or you don't.
I had a post giving my reasons for hating the ridiculous Hundred deleted even though it contained nothing that should have broken the rules, censorship at its worst. Suffice to say that in response to dd, Franchise cricket is anathema to supporters like me who follow our counties throughout the season. Most of the players deemed "high class overseas" are anything but and are simply here for the money and the craic. The County game is being demeaned by this ridiculous competition taking place in the height of summer, ruining what has been a very interesting Championship season so far as we now have an 8 week hiatus before the matches start again. The ECB should hang their head in shame.
The only good thing is that the One Day Cup (much better games than the Hundred in the last few years) can allow some youngsters to get experience, but it is still short changing those that follow their counties.
Instead of introducing the poor mans T20 for mercenaries to play beach/pyjama parlour games for lots of money, the ECB should have properly rebooted the Blast,, which still gets good crowds btw and ensured that the BBC got to show a decent number of games. Job done.
No idea why you brought Rugby and F1 in to it dd, this is about the cricketing schedules, not other sports which may be shown on tv. However, Rugby games on tv do feature international teams or club sides, not franchises who have zero affinity for those watching.

it's a complete joke that there's no serious cricket in july yet again. all the senior clowns at the ecb should have been fired long ago. they care nothing for the england test side

Australia have certainly been the most consistent side in the women's game historically though until very recently they only had England and NZ as serious competition...they haven't dominated recent comps despite that - NZ winning the last t20 wc and India the 50 over version, so they are certainly beatable in these competition formats...England also beat them in both white ball formats in England last time they toured so they had more than a punchers chance but played a really poor game on the day tbh..

Any team is beatable on any given day, but i'm struggling to think of another international team that has dominated trophies like the Australian Women's team :
Won 7 out of 13 World Cups
Won 7 out of 10 T20 World Cups

Great England India 20/20 on right now. England so far well on top. Jacks 1 for 5 in 2 overs brilliant so far and now Tongue takes a third. 63/7, absolute whitewash by England.

Agree entirely on your sentiments Dixie. Hundred is the worst thing ever to happen to County Cricket. Who do the teams represent? No one as far as I am concerned. I still watch the blast as it means something. The 100 is a 2 month long joke.
Lancs have opened a new ground, outside grass banking for spectators. It is near Leyland, about half an hour trip for me., Playing two 50 over games there later this month so will deffo pop a long to one. Moving reserve and women's cricket away from Old Trafford next year I understand. Down side is Blackpool, Southport, Liverpool may miss out on a few regional games.

it's a fair point (Men's Australian Rugby League team I guess) but as I said there were only 3 teams competing for the wins (Oz, Eng, NZ) of the 50 over world cups Australia 7, England 4, NZ 1 until quite recently.. and the womens game was uncompetitive outside of those 3 (NZ always up against it on population and resources)..
I think their 20/20 World cup record has more merit as that's largely been in a more competitive era though they still benefited from being quicker to embrace the women's game, central contracts, the Womens Big Bash giving their younger non capped players great experience against top players.. a lot of teams still playing catch up (and may well never with limited resources) ..one of the few positives for the 100 is the women's tournament though it would be better if was actually in 20 over format.

barstool, it used to be the case that counties played at lots of different grounds, certainly Kent did and i wish it still happened.
Kent have played at no less than 29 grounds in the county over the years , Maidstone being closest to me was my favourite with the annual cricket week being very well attended throughout, stopped playing there 20 years ago I used to attend Folkestone week when we were on family holidays in August and also saw the team play at Gravesend, Gillingham, Dartford, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells.
Canterbury is obviously where i have seen them play most but it's 35 miles away from me and the only other ground they use is Beckenham which is 30 miles distance. It's almost like travelling to an away game to watch them ! There are plenty of would be Kent supporters who live even further away of course as we are a big county. I don't think the club hierarchy really appreciate this.
It's good that Lancs are using a new out ground, not so good that the others may lose out as a result. It's all down to the dreaded finances i suppose
