Basic problem for England is the arithmetic of an Ashes test. Australia have 12 players; Starc the bowler, Starc the batsman and ten others. England have ten: the eleven who take the pitch less one of the top 4 batsman (not usually Root) who scores a total of 10 runs. Stokes not good enough to qualify as 2 men. Australia currently 3/1 for the whitewash. Says it all.
