Splendid application from Rahul and Gill there, proper mental fortitude. Keeps the series alive, at least until tomorrow.

England still strong favourites but unless Stokes turns his arm over it could be hard going for the other bowlers. Dawson will no doubt bowl a long spell but on todays evidence there's not enough turn to worry class batsmen, still it will be Day 5 and the wicket may allow him to get more out of it.

Hayden - Tim David can certainly hit the ball a long way, i actually saw his fellow Aussie Andrew Symonds score a record breaking 34 ball ton at Mote Park in the early days of the Twenty20 (2004) playing for Kent against Middlesex. Kent were set what we thought was a very challenging target of 156 in 18 overs but they got there with 5 overs to spare !  What struck me about his innings was he wasn't really slogging, just hitting the ball unbelievably hard playing, in the main, proper shots.
Report Hayden July 26, 2025 10:40 PM BST
The late Andrew Symonds , remember more than one great knock from AS   Sad

Beautiful clean hitting for David last night and was only a ball outside the fastest hundred from Rohit Sharma , just counting the big teams as i noticed Estonian player even beat that but my wife was probably bowling.

This is one from the memory bank but think the figures are correct , Collis King signed for North Wales team Pontblydden and went to watch his debut game , he broke the previous highest score for a team in that league on his own that day , ended up averaging around 140 and lost 4 balls in the reservoir in that debut game , just another day out that sticks in my mind.

Collis was always on the fringe of the Windies team around then and usually in the squad not carried the drinks a few times , main highlight would have been that stand with Viv in the world cup final coming in when they were in some bother.
Report DixieDean60 July 27, 2025 12:55 AM BST
I remember Collis King playing that innings in the 79 World Cup Final very well, England had the upper hand until he came in. I had never heard of him at the time but i certainly knew who he was an hour or so later !  Never really fulfilled his potential but then the WI had so many great players it was hard to get in to the side
i suppose.

That final was of course notable for the incredible England collapse, losing their last 8 wickets for 11 runs after Mike Brearley and our Geoffrey had put on over 100 for the first wicket, unfortunately at Test match pace rather than one day ! When they were parted the rate required was over six an over, which would seem easily gettable today, but not then. Different times of course in the approach to a run chase.
Report Whisperingdeath July 27, 2025 6:51 AM BST
No rain guys it rather looks like it is missing hence price change.

Remember where there is rain there is cloud! Even if it doesn’t rain!

The pitch is playing pretty well still I would say. As long as the current batsmen can concentrate the first test will be the new ball after an hour or so. This Shirley has to be the game. Jadeja and Sundar have shown the application required but against the new ball?

Pant can come in late to block an end but I would say it is vital for India to knock off the deficit and build even a small lead as a buffer.

Think I should enjoy the cricket rather than get involved in degenerate gambling. My work here is done.

From cricinfo

Colin Graves, the chairman of the ECB, has offered to help Collis King in his immigration fight, after it emerged the West Indian has been forced to return to Barbados while applying for a visa to live in the UK alongside his British wife.

King, who starred in West Indies' 1979 World Cup final victory, has spent more than 40 years living and working in the UK, alongside his native Barbados. But now, aged 67, he has been left in limbo after being told he could not submit an application for a spousal visa while still in the country, and given 14 days to return to the Caribbean.
Report Whisperingdeath July 27, 2025 6:57 AM BST
King's story has emerged following a controversial crackdown by the UK Home Office, although it is distinct from the issues affecting members of the Windrush generation who came to live and work in Britain after the Second World War. According to the Telegraph, King said he had been "treated like a criminal".

Graves was previously chairman of Dunnington CC in Yorkshire, where King has played and coached for 20 years, becoming a popular figure on the club scene. He has offered to act as a referee for King and write a letter of support.

"I was staggered that his application was thrown out without any further investigation," Graves told the newspaper. "Someone just looked at it and said, 'On your bike' and he was out. Nobody seemed to bother to look at it. It was cold and that is what upset me. They did not look at the individual, it was just another number on a file.

"From a cricket point of view in Yorkshire he has been a colossus. He is known around all the clubs and we will do everything we can from a cricket point of view because he is helping with what we are trying to achieve in the recreational game."

King has been unable to play for Dunnington this summer, and has spent the last four months waiting to hear about his status. Having been told he had to return to Barbados, he also suffered the indignity of having his passport taken away at the airport, and only returned when his flight landed in Bridgetown.

"I felt like I was treated like a criminal," he told the Telegraph. "It has really shaken me that after all that time that I can't stay. It really hit me for six."

An attacking batsman who played nine Tests and 18 ODIs, King hit 86 from just 66 balls as he and Viv Richards demolished England in the 1979 World Cup final. Although World Series Cricket and a rebel tour of South Africa ended his international career, he became a much-loved performer in the northern leagues of England, as well as turning out in county cricket for Glamorgan and Worcestershire.

Having previously travelled regularly to the UK on a visitor visa, King fell foul of the "hostile environment" cultivated by immigration officials after submitting his application for a spousal visa last year.

"We tried to get some help at the embassy in Barbados but it is all done online - there is hardly anybody in Barbados to give you any help," he said. "I have given all the information they asked for and more. I have waited and waited and nothing has happened.
Report Whisperingdeath July 27, 2025 6:58 AM BST
"I have been playing cricket in the UK for many years but I have always come back when my visa stated. I have never stayed longer than I was due to stay. If I had six months to play in the leagues, I would always come back on time. Never once in 44 years have I overstayed my time.

"I was not born a British citizen but I have been going to Britain long enough to feel part of the English set-up. You cannot come to a country for so many years without loving the place. I have been coming and going, loving the country and that is the sad thing, really. When I tell people what's going on, they say: 'That can't be right.' But it is right because here I am, stuck in Barbados not knowing when this will end."

Another West Indies-born former cricketer, Richard Stewart, who played for Middlesex in the 1960s, has faced a similar struggle in his attempts to receive a British passport. Stewart arrived in England in 1955, aged 10, and has lived there ever since, but was only told this week that he had been granted citizenship.

In case they shut up shop.

Tbf I got lucky yesterday afternoon and my boat came in.

I sacrificed 75% of my draw green to green out completely. I was also fortunate to be able to lay the draw below evens. I have a ridiculous India green. Not saying there is a snowball’s but if Stokes pursues aggressive fields India may post a small total and anything is possible on day 5 at least in my dreams.

What I mean is I am winning more than I would have been happy to settle for before the start so there is little point in chasing except of course for unadulterated degenerate greed and gambling addiction.

I think you are probably right Jerry

My fear is  one wicket opens the door to 3 left handlers who might not be best placed to deal with a new ball. Once they have they will then have to deal with Dawson bowling into the rough. I think they can deal with him particularly if the current batsmen can deal with the new ball.

Interesting to see how Dawson fares today on a 5th day strip. He is a decent cricketer but I do not believe will add much to the recovery of the Ashes. He needs to rip it up or w3 go back to Bashir or Regan in Aus. He deserves a crack at The Oval. He has certainly done his time. I just do not see too much in him at this level apart from being a great competitor, which,is sometimes not enough

Just shows how careful you have to be making these declarations , there were cries for Stokes to declare 100 runs earlier but going for the two way result in view of the series status was always correct for me , great stuff Ben for not being gung ho silly.

I know i'm assuming too much here to not make this sound silly but imagine Ben going 100 runs less meaning India being say 75 runs more and you could have easily seen India close on 200 runs ahead here and the two way outcome on the other foot , still an almost certain draw as it's panned out but good Stokes captaincy to curb the " we don't draw " emotions in my view.

Despite the Hampshire bias agree with Dawson tbh , a surprising inclusion but difficult in hindsight as to which other options would have been preferable.
Report Whisperingdeath July 27, 2025 4:11 PM BST
Agreed,

Stokes was right. My only point was that it was cloudy. Coulda, woulda, shoulda got  a couple more wickets? Who knows? Certainly n9 complaints from me.

Yes also a little surprised by Dawson. As we just saw on tv Stokes pointed out where the rough is and then bowled Woakes.

This is going to be interested. Round the wicket? He is still bowling on the straight.

Dawson will not like getting hit
Report Whisperingdeath July 27, 2025 4:14 PM BST
It blaming Dawson either but some of the criticism of Bashir was unfounded. He took more wickets than Jadeja and Stokes with a soft ball and did not get a chance to bowl 4 th innings.

That would be fair!

Ironic that two left handers batting out of the rough have saved this game. The dodgy bounce came from the Anderson end to right handers.

I also hope it has cleared up the spin bowling conundrum. We do not possess a World class spinner. Bashir has promise though a lot of work in progress. Rehan Ahmed has something about him and should go to Australia as an option but his  younger brother may be the one to watch!

And i concur with others that some of the England players were churlish in their comments directed at the two centurions towards the end, they should have been more gracious as i'm sure if two English batsmen were in the same position they would certainly have wanted to get their tons !

The fact is that England's attack lacked any real threat, even allowing for a docile wicket. Oh for a real old fashioned spinner. I blame one day cricket again.

Archer had a side strain and was nowhere near top pace which is the point of difference. Everyone is tired. Tbh Stokes and plenty of other England players like Duckett have shot themselves in the foot over this.

For us boys…time to move on. Opportunities abound.

The market has got this wrong again. Engerland look shot  to buggery imho. Not saying India are in too much a better situation but they are in a better head space and have a clear and defined aim to win the series.

India must be great batters, even their spinners get 100 each,

Jofra,I once hit Steve smith archer.
Ben ,I’m carrying a injury stokes
Dawson  taking slow bowling to a new level, why spin it when you can just concentrate on bowling slowly
Root ,I’m the leading run scorer in cricket. And englands best bowler.
Carse,I once bowled a ball that nearly hit the wickets, when I was 10 years old.

The Aussies stand no chance against this attack.having agreed to make matches last a month ,so England can get 10 wickets.

India’s top 5 batsmen all looked comfortable at the crease, then 6 and 7 get 100.

I'd contest England can't possibly win at the Oval cuth simply because although there was nil chance of any sort of challenging declaration at Old Trafford i'd say there will be every chance of a tempting declaration at the Oval if India get the chance as they have to win the game and would rather lose 3-1 fighting than a damp squib at 2-1 , that's why i'll be leaving any draw trade unless there's a chance of laying a very low draw on say day 4 if it presents itself.

Not sure I predicted the draw. Backed India first up then layed England down to 1.21 in the hope of cutting losses. Then backed draw.

I would say I was lucky / unlucky.

Had a huge draw green but the 0-2 screwed me into greening out instead of letting it ride as I normally would have done. Plus Pant injury and I was scared about an India collapse and did not want to risk a large loss, Quite rightly. I gave up 75% of draw green to green out. It was the right thing to do but leaves a bitter taste as I have said before I am a gambler not a banker. I spend a pound to make a hundred not the other way round. That is why I am poor!

I am starting to feel a little bitter and twisted. I really did not get that the pitch was that flat and perhaps I should have if Creepy could score runs on it.

The Oval drains well so do not want to get involved right now.

I missed the boat here so better not to over compensate.

Had a good thing going but it is over now so I better get over it.

That's the thing with us traders WD never any regrets as it's what we do and you have to remember the reason for placing the bet initially is to trade , it's like using horse racing as a comparison in that somebody asking me for a good trade in the next race and someone else asking me which horse will win the race i'd be 95%+ to be picking two different horses , same with Cricket looking at how the first 2 or 3 days may pan out without giving too much thought to the eventual outcome.

One of my syndicate guys still doesn't get why i trade out tennis & cricket low lays i get below 1.29 when they hit 2.0 or thereabouts but as i'd never get involved backing an each of two selection the strategy of not bailing out at 2.0 in that scenario would be doing exactly that , my reason for low odds lays criteria is mostly due to the unpredictability of sport whereas backing an opinion like picking a 2.0 in a 2 way outcome involves too much personal opinion which is what gets 98% of punter historically in the red , to a large degree i've always preferred to let the numbers and strategical approach pick the selections for me rather than have too much of a personal opinion and certainly stay well away from form study and all that " it happened last week so why won't it happen again " thinking which i believe is the punters biggest downfall.

Looking for a trade as opposed to an eventual winner are chalk vs cheese in any sport that's for sure.

Apologies for the ramble but get carried away sometimes and start to digress somewhat.

I like to hear people’s views and opinions.

Rehan Ahmed scored his 5th century of the summer so I would imagine he has booked his place on the plane for Aus and the toothlessness of Dawson looks to have secured the other spinners birth for  Bashir.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda I wanted 5.1 and to lay England at 2.02

Game shot before the kick off!

Haunted by the spectre of too late!

Most important not to overcompensate and lose even a single penny. I’m out!
