Very surprised that Wood has been brought back on the field. Surely England can beat Afghanistan without him and he could easily have to dive in the field and aggravate the injury. They will need him to beat S Africa.
Report TCat February 26, 2025 12:39 PM GMT
they reckoned Afghanistan would be looking to defend 250 with their spinners; well they're well over 300. Well done England going in to a game with 7 batters and 4 bowlers.
Report Whisperingdeath February 26, 2025 12:39 PM GMT
I deserve that....Just tuned in to PMQ's for entertainment and missed this onslaught. I am not in favour of what the Taliban is doing to women in Afghanistan but these boys are breaking down barriers and it is wonderful to watch them play with a smile. Any boycott would have been stupid and achieve nothing. This is compelling cricket.

I love this game Stan

Great over!

Such a shame. To see Englund have to chase down 350 would have been fun and real pressure. This is good for England. We have been so poor a good win here will restore confidence and set it up nicely for an effective quarter final with SA.

Oh and I think we are in a game! No foregone conclusions here!

It is a good wicket and dew expected.

Report Whisperingdeath February 26, 2025 5:45 PM GMT
It's not about the McCullum approach.

England were poor in the field and batted without a brain. Not McCullum's fault although prep was poor and squad left a lot of questions. No variety in the attack, batters in poor nick. Whad'ya do? Aus had one bowler but their batters stepped up to the plate.

I don't have a problem with Butler. Salt was out of form. I hope Banton gets a knock. Bethell was injured. I hope Ahmed gets a bowl too and why are our bowlers getting injured?

Maybe Hussein is right. They need a new Captain.
Report NFL_Man February 26, 2025 5:49 PM GMT
The players body language in the field was poor. Dropped catches, injuries, and don't seem like a cohesive unit to me. Archer, Salt, Butler, Wood, Livingstone, didn't show good signs in the field. Losing to Afghanistan in 2023 was considered a one off, but there has to be a whole review of the whole England set up losing twice to Afghanistan. But dont take anything away from the Afghans, they have got a good team.
Report brentford February 26, 2025 6:04 PM GMT
Smith @ 3 was the kind of speculative decision that only ever looks good if it comes off obviously but felt a bit unnecessary with the other options available ...Brook sadly in no form currently who could have been a real difference maker..

the bowling has looked vulnerable for a while in white ball cricket..Carse was a bit of a miss as he'd done pretty well in t20 esp but playing in this arena without a credible 2nd spin option (which Livingstone and Root are very marginal) isn't ideal..
Report FELTFAIR February 26, 2025 6:15 PM GMT
If it is not the coaches influence then who is encouraging T20 style cricket to the fifty over game/
Report Try My Best February 26, 2025 6:37 PM GMT
You have to laugh. Well played England. Another all time low from the Pomms. Very little ability and what's more they are not the brightest set of players I have ever seen. Game management utterly embarrassing. Have a good trip home lads.
Report sageform February 27, 2025 8:14 AM GMT
They had no excuse for slogging in the last 2 overs. One or two per ball was sufficient and none of them tried the block and run which they could easily have done with 2 fresh batters at the crease. Afghanistan put the fielders on the boundary and England still went for  for  6 hits!
Report sageform February 27, 2025 8:16 AM GMT
Just remembered they have to stay there and play South Africa before they can come home.
Report Whisperingdeath February 27, 2025 12:20 PM GMT

Report mafeking February 27, 2025 3:33 PM GMT
if you bat in the top 4 in 50 over cricket you've gotta be able to get in and be capable of getting a big hundred. not smith's fault he was put in at 3. a big problem that our younger batsmen don't know how to construct a 50 over innings. hardly surprising when cos the ecb's ludicrous obsession with the hundred most of them have only played a handful of domestic games

obviously the bowling could do with more variety in these conditions. surely ahmed even though young was worth a go ?
Report Try My Best February 27, 2025 8:06 PM GMT
Agree with WD. Beautiful country Afghanistan and a very peaceful, loving and tolerant nation with an excellent human rights record. World cricket will have a much greater standing in global sport if they become champions. Can't wait to go for a Test series in Kabul.

Only one knob on here WD and that is you. Supporting a country that doesn't even have a recognised government and whose behaviour towards women and gay people is reprehensible. You think they are exciting because they beat you mugs but they are a very average side as evidenced by their bowling and fielding today. You portray yourself as a cricket lover but give scant regard and utter bias towards the Australians. As I say, only one knob on here. ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR  and I suggest the Pomms go and have a net.

NZ will be better suited to playing SA in Lahore than the dry turning pitch in Dubai. India are so much favoured by the conditions that it will be very difficult for anyone to beat them. I expect NZ to bounce back and make the final.
Report Whisperingdeath March 3, 2025 12:14 AM GMT

Report Hayden March 4, 2025 11:25 AM GMT
Ravi reckoned on 260 - 270 being par before the game but with Maxi to come it could be way ahead of par , India need wickets to slow it down.

What a great team player this Carey has turned out to be , wonderful player.
Report Hayden March 4, 2025 11:36 AM GMT
They needed those two badly , looks a different game now with no Cummins to be wary of , maybe Ravi spot on with his par score.
Report Whisperingdeath March 4, 2025 4:04 PM GMT
Great innings from Carey at least made a game of it and kept it interesting for us.

Looks like Aus going home after only 1 more win than the Engerlund managed.

India looked pretty comfortable throughout. This pitch was definitely easier to bat on. I think who ever meets India will have to play positive cricket. Booth teams need to learn the lessons of NZ's dot balls against India and look to rotate if the big hits are not on.

Tomorrow's match looks cracking, Can't wait. Both teams have plenty of ammo. Sadly India have the best slow bowlers
Report Hayden March 4, 2025 4:13 PM GMT
Thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish , suppose if you give India added advantages as well as being the best team anyway the outcome does seem somewhat inevitable.
Probably in the minority on this thread but kudos for Australia , came here with a roster they could have done without and were battering Afghanistan with a fantastic scoring rate which would have meant avoiding India in the SF , if not for the downpour.
Such a difference between 20 vs 50 overs , i'd consider leaving Kohli out of the T20 squad as he can be a hindrance at times not wanting to get out or getting out in the thirties at a run a ball , but in ODI's he's the GOAT.
The concentration requirement batting against India must be off the scale such is the variation and stuff that keeps you guessing , deserved winners and hope they win the final vs whoever.

Can't wait for tomorrow     Happy

Report Whisperingdeath March 4, 2025 4:15 PM GMT

Report Whisperingdeath March 4, 2025 4:20 PM GMT
I think the Aussie batters really performed well. Smith, Inglis and particularly Carey. The bowling was obviously second string but they did very well. I really like the Champions Trophy format. It seems to mean a lot to the players too.

I really like SA batting and think they could give India run for their money in favourable...or FAIR...... circumstances. They bowling attack is good but again lack the depth India have on slow pitches. I mean 4 World Class spinners ffs! How do you compete with that? Very much doubt there will be any grass on the wicket for the final.
Report Hayden March 4, 2025 5:14 PM GMT
I'll be very disappointed and even surprised if neither Van Der Dussen nor Markram fail to play a Kohli type role , neither are brutality but that 30 overs+ type role is tailor made for them.
Report Hayden March 5, 2025 11:27 AM GMT
Crikey 375 must have a chance here just by playing cricket shots , track looks great but this is a class act from Kiwi's.

The chase is hopefully compulsive viewing though and needs VDD or Markham to bat 30+ overs and a Klaasen cameo on top to get near this total , that's my theory anyway.
Report Hayden March 5, 2025 12:05 PM GMT
Great fightback , SA would have taken this position 10 overs ago big time , game on.

Kiwi are one helluva team tbf.

India of course will have the upper hand in the spin department. NZ not as good as the Indian spinners or variety but if they post a total and defend on a dry now dew free wicket they have a decent chance.

Stick this competition in  the biggest garbage bucket because it doesn't mean a thing. The Indians should not have been able to dictate where they played which was a massive advantage for them over the other sides in the competition who were playing with one arm tied behind their backs. This should never happen again.
Report Whisperingdeath March 10, 2025 8:33 AM GMT
This is a Great competition played by the best sides who wanted to win. We saw some great cricket and India were magnificent and scary. Just imagine Bumrah, Pant and Jaiswal were not even playing.

This situation with India is one to watch. It is not good. Tbf  it is a little frightening. If their Government gets involved it will make it 10 times worse and shades of Berlin’36.

Sport in general is under threat from money men and fascist Governments. At some point we are going to have to stand up to them by voting with our feet and money by cancelling sports Tv subscriptions and not attending games. This might be impossible to organise.
