When you look back now on what Kerry packer did to cricket,it was mind blowing.
Not only the size of what he did,but the fact he got virtually most players to sign up with him.
Very few declined.
It was 10 times a bigger achievement that what Qatar are trying to do.
A lot of great cricketers were lost to the sport.all because of tv rights.this is probably what sowed the seed for sky tv and the premier league.
He then ended up in vegas playing poker for 5 million a night.
An amazing guy,

Was a lot easier getting players to sign up as the wages they were on were paltry in that era..
Would be a lot tougher to recreate these days (certainly not impossible) as top players in most sports are millionaires already and therefore can put things other than the money in to the equation... The best part of Packer's work for the fan was revolutionising tv coverage with stump mics, cameras at both ends as well as many more stationed for close up's alternate angles etc, daddles the duck..and not to mention the spectacle of playing under lights which though these days taken for granted massively changed the sports viewing potential.. |
