He's not yet really had a score in a decent few tries now, and WI isn't the sternest test but...

Dan Lawrence looks like he's found some belief that he belongs in this arena.

Promising.

Think this is a minefield by late on day 4 and a likely easy England win. Slightly regretting trading my draw green a bit rather than sticking with it and am basically flat at the moment, with £750 results, £1.7k red draw, funnily enough hoping the market goes against me so I can get back to a couple of k on results. Can’t bear to do it at current prices having backed draw lower though.

I've emptied the building - only been posting a few months and now look at an England Test thread CrySilly

Not sure who takes the nineteen wickets if it doesn't start to turn.

Apart from Root - every wicket fell to swinging bat (including Campbell)

Hopeful for Mahmood but we'll see.

Yep I'm mostly retired from posting here but I still trade cricket as much as I ever did as I'm sure you do too.

Sent for a bike ride during Stokes innings! Kwality!

The rest was pretty dull and dour. Saw the batting of Shreyas Iyer and my man Pant and was Drewling then saw Bumrah the 5 wickets on a slow turner. What a contrast.

Hard to get excited over English cricket atm. Why bowl Stokes ahead of Mahmood. Keep him for when needed!

England batting looking better al sit on slow pitches against 2nd or 3rd weakest attack in the World. Please for Lawrence, a real talent who looked awful last year. I hope Pope can learn from him and his batting coach.

Boy do we miss Archer.

Foakes keeping is not what was advertised, sloppy - and he also is still averaging less than hapless Buttler with bat even though his appearances have been against lesser opposition.

Surely this has to be the end of Leach, 1 wicket in 60 overs on a turning pitch. Cry

It’s painful this

We’re scraping the barrel with leach, and our seamers are toothless Sad

buttler's record wasn't that bad. something like 33. it's just that people had higher expectations of him cos of his white ball exploits. he has never really excelled in red ball cricket for somerset or lancs either

would say bairstow by the far the worse underachiever in test cricket. he should be averaging nearer 45 than 35 with his talent. maybe he'll kick on after these 2 recent 100s

Yes but no

B’Stard is adapting his game to the needs of Test Cricket

I would have opened the bowling with Mahmoud and Stokes.

Many more games like this one and people will stop watching test cricket, in my opinion the best form of the game!

Anderson & Broad on their worst days are better than this bowling line up.

Root and Stokes are talked about by pundits and the media as all time greats........that bar has really been lowered if so .....good job they are not taking on the Aussies or West Indies from the 70s and 80s ........

pretty sure Root's batting stats qualify him as a great of his era minimum.. .been ranked in the top 4 in the world for most of the last however many years..
captaincy probably not..

Stokes to an extent is getting away with it on magic moments in test cricket but still a very viable allrounder in the longer form by any critique...and not helped by his desire to play when not fully fit (and England management's willingness to indulge it)..

The bowling is not strong but once again, the real problem is the batting. Until we have 4 proper batsmen at the top of the order we will continue to fail at test level. We are now officially the worst of all the test playing teams. They have one more chance to change that with some tests on home soil but I am not optimistic.

Leaving Anderson and Broad at home as not improved his captaincy in the slightest so the dubious claim of the pair undermining his position look misplaced.

Might be best if he resigned now.

We still need to be playing our best bowlers until someone better comes along under a Captain who can get the best out of them.

Oh, and lets try giving our leg spinner a bowl.

Foakes is not as advertised, drops, fumbles, byes galore and averages 17 with bat when you exclude Sri Lanka.  If you don't want Buttler back then Jonny has to be restored as keeper.

5 years now since Joe Root became captain.

No one among the current lot is going to take over the captaincy. If there was someone, he'd already be captain.

You'll just have to wait for the day Joe realizes it himself. And if he hasn't realized that in 5 years, I don't think that realization is coming any time soon.

England need a Mike Brearley type figure imo. I think someone who can manage players and has tactical leadership even if that player's own ability is not right up to test match class. The problem is I can't find one of these individuals either.

Albert Einstein couldn't help this team!

The only bowling side in the Test Championship worse than Engerland is WI. If Our batsmen cannot bat against these and Mayers they have no hope against top Test kwality bowlers.

Root is not a good Captain everybody knows it. Give it to Broad for the Summer or even MorganShocked who will at least sort out the rot over the Summer!

The batting coaches have been appalling as they allowed this sheite to continue. Off stump guard ffs! The bowling coaches not much better but to be fair we are sheite and we know we are! Two Test match standard players in the team and two resting at home. What can you expect. I like the likes of Lawrence, Pope and even Crawley but someone needs to iron them out.

Broad ought to make a decent Captain. On the downside for him is that not many bowlers get the chance, Bob Willis in the eightys the last one. Wonder if Stokes is up for the job, having applied before.
By:

When: 27 Mar 22 19:02
Stokes is loyal and wouldn't want to see Root go but broad as an interim gives Stokes a shout for next time.
