you joke, but years ago my account got hacked, they placed some crazy bet on an obscure af international football match, made 10k, then lost like 8k before I logged in again, I quickly changed the password, bought a new camera.

Absolutely not. I've won money but for the site to crash with open positions is akin to playing on in football after a floodlight failure.

Except its not, as playing with a floodlight failure is not in the rules. The rules on voiding markets is. Betfair have ZERO obligations to open an exchange market and can close it whenever they wish on events.

If they have 'zero' obligations to fairness then post that part of their contract with punters. I've not seen it, maybe you have.

There's the letter of the law and the spirit of the law.  BF have an obligation to maintain integrity at all times.

Today has been a total failure of their IT and I have great sympathy for those who have lost money as a result of those failings.

Managed to trade out of my position, amazingly.

Very lucky to get out of that trade - opportunity well gone only minutes later.

Hope the rest of you guys managed to limit the damage.

Clearly you are in a terrible position, its unfortunate, but it happens often on Betfair and their position doesn't change. They have no obligation to have an exchange market open for an event. The best you can hope for is that unmatched bets get cancelled on the site going down.

BF have a duty to preserve the integrity of their platform. Today has been a shambles which has cost many people a lot of money.

Hamlin - as you know this is an Exchange. Many would have had open positions on Pakistan going hard early on to get ahead of DLS.  Traders looking for some ticks and with large exposure.

Yeah, they gambled, they lost. The exchange isn't built specifically for people to trade ticks like some of the forum degenerates would have you think. You bet on an outcome. Thats the contract. Cashouts and open markets are not obligations.

Betfair couldn't operate if they have to void all losing bets everytime theres an outage. Its not just cricket, imagine how many people lost money on events that were in-play across all sports.

BF have lost massively today. They have failed to put together a team to deliver efficiency in IT. This was the biggest money spinner for years and they've flunked it.

It's costing them millions every time there's a crash.

Exactly, they've missed out on lots of money already... and you want them to refund the losers as well.

Betfair have missed out on millions of risk-free profit from the exchange. They'll still make a load of profit. Refunding the losers on the exchange across all sports that took place or were in-play during the outage? Would cost them more than the profit they made. Its idiotic to think they'd do that.

I think it's idiotic not to employ the minds needed to prevent this in the first place.

Bf like being associated with Gambling charities and use the various gamble responsibly soundbites.

Via incompetence they've shafted a lot of people today. I know over 18s must take responsiblity but an internet betting company has one main obligation: don't crash!

They will restart, and need circa 136 off 5 overs.

Looks like they will be coming back out, however, Pakistan will need around 130 runs to win from 5 overs, so a waste of time coming back out.

If they didn't come back out then traders on here would complain they weren't given the chance to green up

@DT People like me were finding that they were unable to use green on a market to place covering bets to reduce a red on that same market - you were having to use available funds from your actual account to cover those bets. Worse still if you placed a bet and later cancelled it the deducted funds were not re-credited, so repeatedly betting and cancelling would eventually reduce your account balance to zero. Then finally the site keeled over. KIt came back up briefly with th emain issue still unresolved then was taken down again. Markets were finally up again late into th esecond innings but by this time the game was already gone.

As unfair as it is to many, an outage won't cause a void. I'll be surprised if it has happened before on the exchange.

This has happened to me once on betfair. I was 500 bucks deep on one game. Couldn't lay off my green. Went to chat, they said the same thing, that your balance isn't sufficient. I think I told them to place a bet on my behalf, as I only wanted to green out. I don't think they entertained that request. Then the site went down and came back up later. I probably didn't lose or else i'd remember it.

The only time I have experienced a void was on Matchbook. I lost 250 bucks on a game. In those days my bank was probably 500. Went to bed really disapointed. Woke up next day with 400 bucks added to my account. I had an email from matchbook saying they had voided all the bets placed in-play. The reason I had 400 in my account instead of 250 was because I had placed a bet pre toss for a small play. I had cashed out of it after the toss but since the in play bets were voided, my pre toss back stood as a winner Obviously many people would have lost on such a void.

Has this happened before on betfair, that they only void in play bets instead of all market bets? We often go in play with big reds and if something similar were to happen we'd be fkd if we weren't on the right side of it.

^^i am not sure if the matchbook game went in play at toss or start of the innings but my bets were distributed either side of going in play and the one placed before going in-play stood while the later was voided.

Where you're also going get RRF'd is if you're arbing across different market-providers - your unbalanced arb is then a complete gamble at the mercy of whatever odds you were offered. The only saving grace might be that the lay side is the most likely side to suffer from an exchange outage as the backing side is probably going to have arisen due to a free or promo bet from a bookie.

I strongly feel that there is an argument for BF to empower the chat-desk "helpers" to be able to place off-setting bets on behalf of customers where they clearly have green in a market that is not being recognised by the bet-placing algorithm. Of course that relies on emloying staff sufficiently clued up to be able to understand the absolute basic principles of exchange betting - at present this is by no means guaranteed to be the case and is one kind of gamble we really ought not be havng imposed on us.
