it amazes me how previous test failures and players with a f/c avg under 40 (jennings 34.1 from 100+ matches) keep on getting chances from the douchebags in charge of selection for england
I really have no idea why livingstone, clarke, lawrence etc (who all avg 40+ in f/c and are all young enough to be able improve) haven't got a game yet
Was out but they often shirk the responsibility!

That’s just hindsight, I’m afraid. If he’d scored a quick 30 (he’d already played himself in), that would have been just fine. He’s a fairly capable hitter. Highly unlikely to affect the result either way though.

he is far more likely to play and miss a few times, hit a couple of shots and then get out for a single figure score in v little time
thus not allowing buttler to freely score at the other end
so we will agree to disagree on all your points, bar the bit about the result
but for some people england don't pick them

First of all those who fight and run away live to fight another day.
I used some of the money from the red out to back Zverev in the tennis at 1.69 and 2's. Recouped a third of my loss and also backed Sloane Stevens. tbf I chickened out. I only bet a small sum on Stevens at 2.34 when I shoulda thrown the kitchen sink at it. That is the trouble with losses. They make you bold and and care free when you shouldn't or are cautious and careful when you should be swinging! Coulda made fousands on the last two call's!
That sounds like me from a year ago. You've got to be better than that WD. Don't go mugging to the tennis. Its a trap.
But just to boast a bit, I have sloane on the outright and Zverev as well(Zverev at 60 and 44
)As for this game, I am happy its over. Got my red down from 200+ to below 100 despite not being able to monitor my bets during play on day 2 and 3. Going back to the tennis outright again...

Bit late to this. I hadn’t actually spotted you’d had the same view in prospect. I still disagree with it though.
How many many times has he done it? He averages 20 at a SR of 65 and has played about a million tests so really quite a few.
Don’t get me wrong, I think his batting has underperformed his talent partly because he’s often brainlessly aggressive, it’s just that actually this wasn’t a bad situation for playing his shots and one of his quick 30s would have been great. England didn’t badly need quick runs as it was hardly a declaration situation but neither was there any huge need to grind out every possible run in a tight game and even then it doesn’t hurt to score at both ends. What he did was fine, he just didn’t execute his shot well (cf the shot Buttler played early in his innings which should have had him caught midwicket).
Got back when they were 6 down and didn't even bother going for gold.
All in all a decent result for me personally, which looked impossible half way through day 1.
Hopefully that's stopped the rot, April and May were vile months from a betting viewpoint
sure he's not really capable of playing a proper innings any more but as FS says he's slogged plenty of quick 20s and 30s in the last few years. bit of a myth that he's a walking wicket

thanks but I'd prefer to see him leaving or blocking when on strike and allowing buttler to play his shots at the other end as the payoffs for the team are far greater using this strategy than they are to have broad slogging and occasionally getting useful runs himself
if its broad & anderson left at the end then I am with you 100% on your strategy argument but it is selfish and braindead I'm afraid with a batsman of buttler's class on 70+ not out at the other end
there was no necessity to advance the game at the rate broad decided he would

It’s a well repeated canard that Broad’s batting has gone off a cliff. That’s not quite the same thing, is it? He’s always been more of a hitter than a proper batsman, which is a shame but there you go.
I see you cherry picked your stats much as I did.
Buttler wasn’t actually on 70+ at the time Broad was out but he certainly was set.
Broad just bats like that. As I’ve said, this is a problem sometimes but wasn’t particularly here.

Now that’s discipline. By contrast, I screwed a reasonable position to make only a small green when even a tiny bit of thought would have told me the draw was only likely to go up while England batted and that being on it with Pak batting was very high risk of green evaporating. Not a good test for me but at least I didn’t lose the nearly £4K I was red on England day 1.

well yeah great eng won by an innings but if (and that is a huge IF) pak put together 350 2nd time around, then those runs that were potentially missed out on could have proved way more important than they actually were
you can look to his knock in melbourne if you want, the series was dead and my nan could have got a 50 on that pitch
the same melbourne pitch that apparantly excused cook his woeful performance in the ashes which that apart from failure after failure after failure
While I’m pointing things out you’ve got wrong, you’ve just inadvertently shown that Broad did actually support Buttler adding more runs. I say it again, from 170 or so on, of course you want more but you don’t really need to be trying to bat conservatively to get them. Your aim, given the large amount of time left in that scenario, is mainly to maximise run expectancy, sure but there should be some intention to score quickly too, as long as that doesn’t have a big effect on expectancy. You wouldn’t, for example, particularly want the set batsman to block four an over unless they were real buffet balls then look for a single fifth or sixth ball.
Also, clearly you have cherry picked your stats. Why two years, not one or three or more? Why no away tests? It’s because it suits your argument, not because of any validity conferred by excluding one good score on a flat deck. In fact, he averages rather more at home than away and at a better SR. At least I owned up to my 24 plus stat being arbitrary and suiting my argument.

The head injury was four years ago.
The sampling window issue is a complex one. Suffice to say though, that test careers aren’t long enough to draw remotely meaningful conclusions about recent form and the more narrowly you sample, the less valid your conclusions. So the opposite of what you say is probably more true.
