The SA quota system

Rabadabadoo took 3 wickets and Piedt bowled 20 odd overs sparing Morkel being treated like a carthorse. Is your point there should be more " colour " discrimination as there are too many Whiteys in the team?

Rabada is an excellent prospect and Philander is injured. I am not sure but I think Duminy is classified as a player of colour. Van Zyl could have been dropped because he has been rubbish over the last few months. Was he kept in because he is white?

I get confused as to who is a player of colour. Is Red Neck considered as a player of colour too?

You are right, the others aren't playing all that well but as I understand it Viljeon would have played as a replacement for Steyn under different circumstances.
There is talk that he might head off to NZ to try his luck over there.
I am pretty sure JP Duminy is considered a player of colour or see why would he have batted 7 and not bowled in the last game?
I'm not getting involved the whole debate about quota but it seems to have thrown the SA selection into disarray that's all.

Bavuma over Duminy is also quota related. Within the four players of colour, one is supposed to be African. Bavuma and Rabada both count, however, if they dropped Bavuma and retained Duminy, then if Steyn returns for Rabada in the third or fourth test they would have to get Bavuma back in to meet the quota. Presumably they think that would look slightly strange, hence Bavuma keeps his place.

The theory is that if Steyn and Philander come back for Morris and Rabada then the quota is still met through Bavuma (african), Amla, Piedt and Philander.

Admire Hashim Amla as a player and bastman, but he is a terrible captain. Everyone knows but not ready to accept it since they like him. Change of captaincy is required to move forward.

Funny how this is never discussed on Sky.

Piedt is the glaring one imo. With Elgar they have an adequate spinner and SA must surely play to their strengths which is quick bowling.

To only have 3 quicks has been a big mistake.

Cricket South Africa has confirmed that the selection of the national team includes a guideline on transformation which requires the consideration of at least four players of colour in the starting XI. That was the major outcome of an internal review conduced by three CSA board members to look into the selection of Vernon Philander for the World Cup semi-final, following allegations that the bowler was added to the team to meet an unofficial quota.


CSA abolished an international quota which demanded four players of colour in every international XI in 2007, but has stepped up its domestic quota since then. From next season, South African franchises will be required to field six players of colour, including three black Africans, as part of what Lorgat calls "aggressive transformation" in a bid to tap into the country's biggest talent pool.

or any combination thereof predicated on ability
lot more respect & cohesiveness that way too

no problem at all with quotas in south african cricket, except at the international level.

by all means it should be aggressively pursued from school teams through to domestic sides, but the national side should ALWAYS be selected on merit alone.

Unofficially yes. A kind of positive discrimination.

Something needed to be done, white players playing in front of white crowds is unhealthy in South Africa and would end up killing the game there if it carried on.

I am a lifelong SA fan. But the politics involved in WC semifinal 2015 were a disgrace. And thats how the existence of the unofficial quota came out. Ab had threatened to retire(which resurfaced again during this series) and that is what forced CSA to announce that yes, even though the quota was abolished, the selectors still have to follow a 'guideline'. I still think the selection of philander at that semifinal was a crime and people should be held acountable for it.

Amla's retirement could well be a result of these politics in the team. Yes, he wasn't the best captain, but It is a possibility that the captaincy has been given to AB jus to keep him quiet and happy(though I am not sure he is the sort of a person to run after such things.) Still, AB's retirement is a threat that looms large over CSA.

In short, quota is a great idea at the domestic level(to give more opportunities to colored players). But it is soon going to kill the SA national team. I don't expect SA to be competetive in 2-3 years, if the quota stays. Winning isn't a priority. Playing enough colored players is. The good thing is that at least amla is a colored player which reduces the negative effects of quota a little...
