you not looking at his stats dstyle

average in the low thirties, pretty short career, less than 3500 test runs, less than 3500 odi runs. dismissals are a function of the attack as well as the keeper.

but sangakarra  with a test average of almost 60, a odi average of almost 42, almost 27000 runs in odi and test cricket, along with an incredible long career, isn't as good.

prior scored more runs, has a better average.

what about dhoni, more runs better average, stewart has achieved way more as a keeper batsman that haddin has.

what about flower, marsh, healy ffs, kamran akmal, de villiers, mccullum, knott.

the sheer passion with which i hate ian healy is testament to how good he was.

and moreover, where have you got this piece of information that he's retired from cricket. Clarke is on record today as saying he expects him to return during the Ashes.

What are his personal issues which have been reported as the reason for missing the 2nd test ?

obviously it's not been disclosed. his daughter was diagnosed with a form of neuroblastoma some time ago, which accounted for his last absence for "personal reasons", but i think she went into remission and was given the all clear. he's still with the team but i don't know whether his family are with him in the UK or not.

a few mutterings of stress related illness as well. either way, despite his being a filthy convict, i wish him well and hope his daughter's illness hasn't returned. i can't think of anything worse.

His family is in London with him. All hush hush but it does seem the issue is unfortunately due to his daughter.

And he hasn't retired. Clarke just said in the press conference he expects Haddin to be back.

I'd also heard it was stress related. Neither is good for him, but I hope his daughter is OK.

agree Adam Gilchrest, was streets in front of Brad Hadden and most others, lets hope everything turns out ok, for Brad Hadden though.

I thought Gilchrist was a better keeper than Haddin. Gilchrist's batting was such a high level , alot of commentators never really put too much focus on his keeping.

I actually thought that, Alan Knott, was one of the very best wicketkeepers, I saw, but obviously Gilchrists batting, makes him the best keeper/batsman and by some margin. Alan Knott was a 50 batsmen, but never scored big, big, runs.

Alan Knott barely scrapes a mention yet Kamral Akmal and Brad Haddin are mentioned in the same sentance! IMHO the former should be arrested for impersonating a wicket keeper and the later doesn't merit being included in a list for best wicket keepers of our time let alone best wicket keepers of all time! I think APE Knott averaged something around 32 with the bat. Gilchrist changed the game but only because pitches flattened out. Knott was a very good batsman who could attack or defend when required. His batting ability is up there with any of them even Gilly.

Nonetheless, anyone who rated him a better cricketer than AB de Villiers has to be on drugs.

Les Ames seems to have been forgotten when mentioning great wicket keeper batsmen and he played on some fairly atrocious pitches averaging over 40 in tests with the bat and scored over a hundred first class centuries

Forgotten probably not the right word, just most people won't be old enough to remember him. That's some record though, a wicketkeeper averaging over 40 with the bat in Test Cricket in that era where most teams had specialist wicketkeepres is pretty special.

Brendan McCullum warrants a mention as well.
