Weather will play a big part at the start of this match, but rather less on the forecasts after that.

I fancy a result, and as I predicted a NZ win in this Test at the start of the first Test, and I can see no reason to change my mind.

They take the bails off and you have to use your eyes to see if the ball, has hit the stumps, adjudicated of course by the umpire.

Ballance looks absolutely scared stupid at the moment.

He doesn't appear to be watching the ball and some of his movements are bizarre for a number 3 bat at Test Level. His body language looks awful and he appears to be a walking wicket at the moment.

The thing is I don't think they will drop him.

That would be funny if the selectors recalled KP and made him bat at 3 which he hates! I did say previously they might try that against Aussie then drop him forever after two test's. Obviously Strauss has quashed that but I wonder when Bayliss will be questioned about picking his strongest possible lineup!

top stuff by NZ... to have to win a test and with quite long rain delays and win with 20 overs to spare is pretty impressive.
Report Whisperingdeath June 2, 2015 5:13 PM BST
To be fair NZ have totally dominated this series. They did a typical NZ choke on the final day at Lords. They should feel disappointed not to have won this 2-zip or at least 1 nil. England sort of emerged with some positives after Lords only to dash themselves again.

Bayliss has a lot of thinking to do about the makeup of the side. I think they can drop Ballance to add another spinner like perhaps Rashid but is he good enough, we will never know. Butler and Stokes are good enough to bat 5 and 6. Maybe move Root up to 4 but no higher. Probably a good idea to add another opener at three as he will see early business against Aussie. I don't know who the next cab is off the rank to be honest.

I guess you have to persist with Ali as off spinner but there is a berth for an extra spinner and one needs to be tried. I think our attack may have problems in batsmen friendly conditions this summer.

Report mafeking June 2, 2015 5:25 PM BST
england very up and down at the moment. did very well to turn the lords test around but you're gonna get inconsistent results when half the side have played around 10 games or less. new zealand just have a more experienced and settled side

you need senior players like bell to pull their weight. he's very lucky that they don't want to try anyone else new with 3 very tough series coming up
Report VardonVoo. June 2, 2015 6:14 PM BST
"New ball" question - is the new ball easier or more difficult to block than an older, possibly swinging ball, if you are not especially aiming to get runs?
Report Injera June 2, 2015 6:15 PM BST
More difficult.

Pronounced seam, greater pace off the pitch leads to more nicks.
Report VardonVoo. June 2, 2015 6:30 PM BST
So if you are trying to survive a full day's overs then the chances are your middle to lower order will be the ones facing the second new ball, which will be more difficult for them to avoid getting out to.

In which case, given that runs are not required if you're not going to chase, wouldn't it be better if your better batsmen were still around when the second new ball comes into play?

An unusual idea in England's second innings might therefore have been to put the tail in first. If they are prone to getting out to the new ball anyway then it makes little difference if it happens with the first new ball or the second, but if they somehow see out a fair few overs and take the edge off it then the top order are likely to last much longer, perhaps long enough to take on the second new ball when they are already settled and then possibly see the side home.

Any thoughts?
Report Injera June 2, 2015 7:29 PM BST
Rarely do captains/coaches alter their batting lineup.

One of the anomalies of sides that use nightwatchmen is that if there are only a few overs to face for an opening pair, coaches will never open with a nightwatchman.

In England's first innings here, Buttler, Stokes or Mooen could have gone in at 3, 170-1. Attack the spinner before the second new ball. We didn't do this and lost momentum.

Coaches rarely show much imagination imo. Neither do captains. It's one of the skills lacking.
Report VardonVoo. June 2, 2015 7:52 PM BST
That's a VERY interesting anomaly you've mentioned. I wonder why they don't?

we won't even reach the 2nd new ball, against Australia. I have just seen Dominic Cork talking on SkySports News and he reckons it will be a closer series, than some people think and they will play the same side, in Cardiff, well the Aussies, will come at England, as hard, if not harder than New Zealand have. 177-0 in the 1st innings and 47-0 in the 2nd innings and the rest have managed 173 and 208 for 9 wickets in both innings. The middle order is Englands biggest worry, as no's 9, 10 and 11, Broad, Wood and Anderson have scored 123 runs for the loss of 4 wickets, so an average of 30 is pretty good for the last three. It doesn't take alot to work out where Englands biggest problem lies.

Report johnnythebull June 2, 2015 9:12 PM BST
other than not being able to bat, bowl or field they ain't too bad
won't be 5-0 to the aussies
3-1
or if eng can find smth 2-1
Report cricketnut2 June 2, 2015 9:25 PM BST
I would say it will be 3-0, if the weather misbehaves in a couple of games, 4-0 if it misbehaves in one game and England may win a dead rubber at the Oval, but me thinks the Aussies would take alot of pleasure in winning 5-0 in England. We have 3 spare spaces in the side, we need to find some players that can score runs at no's 3 and 4 and a better spin bowler than Moheen. The trouble is have we got 3 better players, playing in the County Championship. Forget Pieterson, as they have already decided, he isn't playing.
Report oddduck June 2, 2015 10:30 PM BST
