Interesting to see how SL bounce back after the first Test, I am expecting some improvement.

No rain about in Wellington, but bad light may come into things late every day.

5 draws here out of last 10 tests at the basin. Only 2 of those results were hugely effected by rain.

8 from 10 the winner of the toss has sent the other team in, however, of the 5 results that has backfired, with 4/5 tests being won by the team being sent in, and the 5th match involved Bangladesh so can be taken with a grain of salt.

Average first inns total from last ten 351.5

Wait on toss for me.

that is the funniest thing I have read in a long time mafeking.

Is draw a real possibility even without weather interruption?  Beginning to look it and of course NZ only need to draw so can just bat all day
Report screaming from beneaththewaves January 5, 2015 11:22 PM GMT
Yeah, that crossed my mind too. McCullum is an attacking captain tactically, but strategically he'll be happy to bat all day in this situation.

Hour after hour is passing without a wicket...
Report Whisperingdeath January 5, 2015 11:25 PM GMT
I saw a similar scenario to this but I think it will end in a result and I am not around to cash in at the right time so i took a walk away here. This Williamson is top quality and could bat long. I stated previously the grass could hold the pitch together, Good luck whoever is playing this one.
Report Mister Fish January 5, 2015 11:32 PM GMT
if they drop another catch someone is going to call for an investigation........

Report tyco161 January 5, 2015 11:42 PM GMT
Your right there whispering that Williamson is top quality. And only 23/24 years old. I really think he should/would make any world 11. NZ well served by him the last 2-3 years
Report tyco161 January 5, 2015 11:50 PM GMT
cant work out why the draw is so low. McCullum will declare overnight if it gets to it.
Report screaming from beneaththewaves January 5, 2015 11:52 PM GMT
Shows the benefit of playing all that first-class cricket in England year after year.

If only England allowed their own international players to do that.
Report tyco161 January 5, 2015 11:52 PM GMT
Lead of 189 now, another 160 in last two sessions.. gives SL 349 to get on last day. Sounds plausible to me
Report Darkforcesofevil January 5, 2015 11:57 PM GMT
Angelo seems to have other plans. reminds me of mo yousuf at sydney this
Report Mister Fish January 6, 2015 12:03 AM GMT
NZ will not declare until game is v safe.  They are 1-0 up in a 2 match series on a pitch that is getting better not worse.  For there to be a result NZ need to be bowled out.
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 12:04 AM GMT
Don't know Mister Fish, McCullum can be attacking and he will be keen to see how Craig performs. But ok maybe my scenario was a bit aggressive.
Report trader pj January 6, 2015 12:07 AM GMT

Report screaming from beneaththewaves January 6, 2015 12:08 AM GMT
Williamson and BJ Watling playing the Hussey/Siddle roles, Darkforces?

Mo Yousuf after THAT Sydney Test:

"We tried to contain Hussey and put pressure on Siddle. But he batted very well, didn't give us his wicket and batted two-and-a-half hours in the morning session to take the game away," Yousuf said.

There will also be scrutiny over the performance of Kamran Akmal, who dropped Hussey thrice and Siddle once, apart from failing with the bat. Yousuf defended Akmal after yesterday's performance and did so again today.

"Dropped catches are a part of the game," Yousuf said. "They batted very well after that. But it's difficult to win when you drop them. If we hadn't dropped catches we could have won it. We have dropped a lot over the last few months, but we can't help it. We try hard in practice."

ah ok, must have missed that... cheers.
Report Charkitz January 6, 2015 2:37 AM GMT
This match really is very similar to last years's test at The Basin.

It's a shame really, the days of Oz and NZ producing seaming bowler friendly wickets seems to be almost gone

Aggressive declarations are often needed to get a result these days
Report Charkitz January 6, 2015 3:08 AM GMT
Look at Oz v India today, perfect example.

Only reason they'll be result will be fast batting and an agressive declaration.

Really makes for boring cricket
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 3:09 AM GMT
To be fair.. this was a seamer friendly wicket on day 1.
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 3:09 AM GMT

Talking about giving sri Lanka an hour tonight... gives them 2 shots at new ball.... what do others think?
Report BJT January 6, 2015 3:44 AM GMT
Have to have a go at them tonight, at least 10 overs.
Report Charkitz January 6, 2015 3:45 AM GMT
Well being 1-0 up in the series there's no real incentive for them to make an aggressive declaration here. They may well just bat and bat and bat
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 3:46 AM GMT
Agree with you BJT, but not enough runs at this stage I think. 25 to go. So say they get 45 runs in the next 15, gives them a lead of 400 for SL to get in 10+90 overs... Yeah on second thoughts, that is workable. THat probably is what it will be.
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 3:47 AM GMT
To be fair.. my position is hoping for a draw as that is my biggest green by far. So I will be ready to lay the draw if and when necessary.
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 3:50 AM GMT
wow just saw on screen that these two have batted 107 overs together.
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 3:55 AM GMT
looks like they have been given the word to go for a bit of a hit.
Report BJT January 6, 2015 3:58 AM GMT
I would expect they play for a result.  NZ are an aggressive team like Aus, and without being stupid about it, will back their bowlers to do a job.  Especially against a mob that has been simply going through the motions of 300+ run partnership, their minds won't be ready, so spring a declaration on them and give them 10 minutes to get out there.  Probably skittle 2 of them tonight and all of a sudden 8 wickets, 90 overs to get 370 or so tomorrow.
Report BJT January 6, 2015 4:05 AM GMT
150/250 first targets before doing anything.
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 4:09 AM GMT
yeah that was my initial though too. Get the 150/250 give them a 400 run lead and retire the innings.
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 4:10 AM GMT
declared already
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 4:11 AM GMT
wow that is very generous. 17+90 overs for 389 runs. Lay the draw I say.
Report BJT January 6, 2015 4:14 AM GMT
Strange.  Would have thought given how close they both were, and how many overs left to give them the chance to get a little more personal glory....

Probably enough, but certainly had a few overs left they could have utilised.  Were scoring at 6 an over after all.  But then I guess if they get an extra wicket in that extra 3 overs, then all worth it.  Probably need to be at least 3 down here by close of play.  Obvious play, is to be laying NZ.  If batsmen look in any way comfortable, then that is the price that will drift quickest.  Would wait and see how they are going though.
Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 4:15 AM GMT
Thats the way I am viewing it. I managed to lay some draw at 2.18 on the dec, but that was totally unexpected. Gonna be hard to win this one for NZ I think.
Report BJT January 6, 2015 4:18 AM GMT
10 minutes gone, so what 16 overs left today?  106 overs, 3.68 runs an over, and the game is theirs.  Fully expect them to start off by playing for the win, not going silly, but playing as if they are chasing a score, not batting out time.
Report Charkitz January 6, 2015 4:20 AM GMT
Well done McCullum, nice and aggressive. Should be more of it
Report BJT January 6, 2015 4:21 AM GMT

Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 4:24 AM GMT

Report BJT January 6, 2015 4:26 AM GMT

Report tyco161 January 6, 2015 4:27 AM GMT
Pitch looking like a road... Maybe the NZ lay is the play..
Report BJT January 6, 2015 4:28 AM GMT
Run rate is key really.  Only so far draw can go, has to really go up and down depending on RR and RRR.  Wickets likely to slow the RR down cancelling out.  Play has to be laying NZ, and getting out before a wicket.  All about timing, when they start making runs.
Report BJT January 6, 2015 4:30 AM GMT
Good bowling though.  Tough to face.

Report BJT January 6, 2015 5:03 AM GMT
2.10 to 2.85 in what, an over and a half? 2 or 3 runs?  ffs
Report BJT January 6, 2015 5:03 AM GMT
The market, not my trades...
Report BJT January 6, 2015 5:07 AM GMT
3.75 an over.  Only gone up .07 runs an over needed.  Non important tonight, what is important is not losing a wicket.  Freshen up coming into tomorrow with NZ on the back foot knowing they didn't capitilise, and may have dangled the carrot too close to arms reach.  Then, attack the score tomorrow.  Either way, the price has moved, probably good for another 15 minutes or so before anything else happens, usually the case.  Matter of waiting for the train to leave the station, and jumping on board as it is taking off, LoveLove
Report BJT January 6, 2015 5:11 AM GMT

Morning Tyco, Is this rain going to last long enough to cause panic in the market. The nz met have predicted drizzle up until 12pm and then a brighter afternoon. Thinking of backing the draw to lay of when the crash comes to reduce my draw red from initial lay of around 4.0. Cant believe this test is still going and I am staring down the barrel of a big loss if its a draw. Still think a result is possible as teams have chased down totals recently, or sri lanka get bowled out. Pak chased 300 odd in 50 overs at the start of the year to beat sri lanka, India were well on the way in 1st test v aus. Sri lanka might as well go down 2-0 as 1-0.

That was very disappointing from Sri Lanka. I was at the ground yesterday and the amount of wickets that fell due to rash shots and rushes of blood to the head was criminal. THey should have easily batted out for a draw but gifted this game to NZ. Maybe the psychology of what happened to them the day before hurt so much. I dont know but really that was bizarre.
