Alistair Sook said Jimmy Anderson is the most skillful bowler on the planet.
Ok, so he didn't say he is the best, because he isn't, just the most skillful. He didn't say he is the fastest because he isn't. He didn't say he has the best control, because he hasn't. He didn't say he employs the best strategies, because he doesn't.
He said he is THE MOST SKILLFUL BOWLER IN THE WORLD. What the f*ck does that mean Sook, you complete clown?
I presume because Jimmy Anderson can swing the ball appreciably both ways at times and because he plays on Sook's team, that is why Sook made the foolish comment. Ffs, there are about 12 guys named Kumar from India who can do that for a start. Like Anderson, they tend to be one trick ponies. A one trick pony is not THE MOST SKILLFUL BOWLER IN THE WORLD.
The skills of bowling include control of line and length, control and variation of pace, getting the ball to behave in different ways off the pitch, spin, swing, deception.
What Anderson is not, is the most skillful bowler on the planet simply because he he is the most prominent bowler who can swing the ball around corners when conditions suit him.
Anderson averages 38 in Australia from 13 matches and 38 in South Africa from 5 matches. So he doesn't have the skills to adapt well to faster bouncier pitches and the different ball.
He averages 36 in NZ from 5 matches. So it seems he just does not have the skill to bowl at any great level in the Southern hemisphere at all.
In the subcontinent he also averages above 33 but only gets 3 wickets per match, because he is being bowled to advantage, because he doesn't have the skill set to be a dominant bowler there. The guy is at very best an average honest toiler overseas, and decent trier at home most of the time, but occasionally when he meets the right setup at home he has the same threat as a top class bowler.
Now, Sook, it is incumbent on you to correct your foolish misguided statement in the same forum in which it was made. Saying sh1t like that just confuses a lot of people, and makes you look a goose to the people who know what they are on about.

I thought I was the only one who believes Anderson is overrated by media and TV pundits alike. They tend to ignore or forget the overseas figures you've pointed out.
Jimmy looks good in ideal English bowling conditions with the Duke ball in his hand but, as you say, struggles to adapt his approach when something different is required.
Also think he is overly cautious at times and seems to be preoccupied with saving runs (boosting his personal figures in the process), than trying to 'buy' a wicket with deliveries that will tempt batsmen to drive on the up. I know that nothing boosts figures like taking wickets but he appears too cautious in his field placings, too early in an innings.

gone off the boil a bit in the last year or so before the last couple of matches but between 2010 and 2012 was top class averaging more like 25 rather his career record of 30. absolutely instrumental in the series wins in australia in 2010/11 and india in 2012

Anderson is an honest trier, sometimes a match winner, sometimes the dominant bowler in a series, more often than not he doesn't have a great impact. But you expect this from any half decent bowler.
The most skillful bowler in the world is surely someone who can use his mastery of the skills of bowling to adapt to a variety of conditions. Not someone who has honed one single skill to a very high standard, and has to wait for the right conditions to prevail for him before he is any great threat.
Cook: it took you five tests into the summer to get anything useful from your bowlers. They finally bowl decently in the last three matches. Now you are acting as if you deny the first four matches ever happened. Stop being a d1ckhead, making attention seeking claims like this one won't make them become some sort of self-fulfilling prophecy.

Especially that the players who play long term for England in tests and end up making x runs or getting y wickets are basically just run of the mill test players. If that is such a bitter pill for you to swallow, then swallow it, and you never know, someone like Steven Finn or Joseph Buttler might yet turn out to be a proper talent on the international stage, your first one since Botham.
You have a woefully inadequate leader as skipper, who is an average long term test batsman, you have average trundlers leading your attack, you look back longingly at pathetic self promoter Duncan Fletcher coaching you as if he were some kind of visionary. I know you poor bastards have to go through a lot, but losing suits your nature, you are good at it. When you win you don't know what to do or how to act and wind up acting like pansies.

Might have something to do with the fact you haven't had any good English players for a very long time, should be playing under the flag of the United Nations IMO

There are people using this site who hadn't even started school the last time any Australians dragged their balls and chains to the Oval with a chance of a series victory.

I don't see why you are getting so worked up, nobody is really disagreeing with you - Anderson is not the best bowler in the world and Cook isn't a very good captain. But neither are Anderson and Broad "average trundlers" as you call them. Both are rated in the ICC'S top ten.

I know Anderson is not generally regarded as the best bowler in the world, this is obvious of course. Cook said he is the most skillful bowler. It is just a stupid statement.
"He has exceptional skill in being able to swing the ball sharply both ways." Something like that would be more accurate. And maybe add, "there are not too many long term international bowlers who have this skill."
It is not wrong to describe Anderson and Broad as good international bowlers. At times I like to judge players by the position they occupy and how they perform again the standard of that position. These are highly experienced international bowlers whose job it is to lead the England attack at this time. As attack leaders go they are below par. Boult and Southee are probably outperforming them overall, Harris and Siddle are outperforming them, Steyn and Morkel are outperforming them. So they are average at best in this role.
Their performance at Lord's v India will not easily be forgotten here, it was disgraceful for players with their CV's, and I would suggest you could find about 50 cricket teams around the world whose bowlers could have done better there. OK, maybe that is just a bit of a one off shocker, but it was not something you expect from experienced bowlers at this level, not even once.
