After the poor performance during the 2nd test England seem to have turned the corner and put behind them a troubled period. The 4th Test at Old Trafford and the 3rd test at Southampton had all the signs that England have found their way back into the top flight and that they have regained confidence to come out at the Oval and to win the series 3-1. The long range weather forecast is good bar an odd shower on the first day (Friday), I'm convinced Cooks gang will continue the good run...how about you?

I laid this morning and kept laying when wickets fell and still laying a little.  I really can't see how a draw occurs.  Perhaps I'm becoming too attached to the result I want.

robson's technique just isn't tight enough to deserve him his place in front of the more aggressive openers vying for his spot.

i thought compton/carberry were unlucky to lose out, maybe they got on with PietersenWink
Report cardshark August 15, 2014 6:56 PM BST
they want an over of spin here surely
Report Charlie August 15, 2014 6:56 PM BST
Compton's a bit negative and Carberry's a better limited overs player and a little too old to make a test career.
Report DStyle August 15, 2014 6:57 PM BST
certainly the noises seem to be that it was something about compton's personality that got him moved along rather than his cricket.

as for carberry, it must be a very bitter pill to swallow, given that he did better than most standing up to johnson and harris, and gets dropped, but the likes of woakes, jordan and robson keep getting selected because they've been part of winning sides yet bring nothing to the side.

i suspect it had something to do with a couple of press pieces he was involved in.
Report Charlie August 15, 2014 7:06 PM BST
Carberry did do better than most down under but there wasn't a lot of competition. Woakes and Jordon are bowlers who can bat a bit, Robson's got a good temperament.
Report mafeking August 15, 2014 7:57 PM BST
would think jordan is the only one of 3 who might still be the side next july

Draw does look a very remote possibility at this stage.

But Cook will bat too long in all probability. So draw could shorten quite a bit from here.
Report OzBattla August 16, 2014 1:34 AM BST
Small bet draw.. Cooks cautious captaincy could see ENG bat and bat..
Report budgiebird. August 16, 2014 1:46 AM BST
Couldn't really blame him. His first priority has to be to seal the series win. He would get pilloried if he declared the first innings early, India somehow manage to set England a target for the final day and they get skittled out cheaply on a deteriorating wicket.
Report mafeking August 16, 2014 2:05 AM BST
even if england get 600 chances are this will be done and dusted in 4 days. hard to see india putting up much of a fight 2nd inns facing a massive deficit
Report hornetsman August 16, 2014 2:56 AM BST
Worst Indian batting line up for 30 years. Take Dhoni out of it and its not even County standard. Paying the price for allowing Sehwag, Gambhir and Tendulkar to stay on past their sell by date!
Report DStyle August 16, 2014 11:26 AM BST
not sure hornetsman.

there's a LOT of talent there, but they travel poorly and the opening pair has been ineffective.

i'd open with vijay and rahane. these two have shown that they've got the temperament to play patient sensible innings in troubling conditions. dhawan was a retarded selection for england and you can't bring gambhir in half way through a series with no cricket and expect him to be any better.

you keep the new ball away from pujara and you've then got a much safer line up, less pressure on kohli, and still space for raina and sharma. yes pujara should be able to handle being one down for nothing, but he shouldn't have to deal with it all the time.

their issue is at the top away from home because you need players to protect the middle order from alien conditions.

(it's also why i think dravid may have been better than tendulkar; i also think tendulkar owes hundreds of runs to him as well.)
Report cardshark August 16, 2014 12:00 PM BST
Dhoni has lost the plot IMO - sometime he produces magical captaincy but over 30 overs bowled and he doesn't even know whether there is anything in the pitch for the spinner. Surely you would give them an over? It could be spinning? How would we know? Does he seriously believe that these boys are going to stop England scoring 600?

Go on then.  ENG all out 400.  Lead of 250.  India bat 450. ENG  need 200.  Ind be around 10/1.  Draw look terribly short to me.

I was trying to think the same way.  270 left.  Say another 30 overs used.  240 left.  Reckon you are looking at 180 absolute minimum.

Report budgiebird. August 16, 2014 8:56 PM BST
So we are looking at a team whose last three innings combined lasted 150 overs, surviving for 180 overs and the odds on offer are just 8.4?

Crazy price!!!!
Report budgiebird. August 16, 2014 9:11 PM BST
If anyone really believes India can bat for 180 overs then they would be better betting on an India win at 30 rather than a draw at 8.4. If they can bat 180 overs then there is more than a reasonable chance that England will panic in the last two sessions on a wearing pitch and be skittled out.

Report budgiebird. August 17, 2014 10:17 AM BST
There might be a heavy shower or two this afternoon, but short-lived and even that is likely to play to englands advantage as with a bit of moisture around it could bring conditions similar to the first morning, just as India are starting their 2nd innings.. and most of the time lost will be made up at the end of the day... if they get that far!!

Kholi can batter these medium pacers and gentle off spin if he is focused

Report cardshark August 17, 2014 12:19 PM BST
I would be a bit wary here - India have very little pressure on them here ( because they are expected to crumble ) and ALL of their batsmen are due. Someone is gonna get a big score here I reckon ( just on the basis of probability ). I think they will bat positively from the outset.

And England have been in decline, since they hit no 1, its a British thing, you get to no 1 and they think they are the greatest and they then come down to earth, very quickly with a great big bump (whatever team sport it is). I happen to think, that this particular side, is not that good, as we will find out next summer, when Australia come back here. Cook, has scored runs, but has been LBW (not given) or dropped on numerous occasions. Robson is not good enough, the jury will be out on Gary Ballence but has done well so far, Ian Bell is pushing on and isn't going to get any better. Mohin Ali, will get found out at a higher level. Saying all that I have been crying out, for groundsman to produce pitches that would suit England, rather than the opposition, which they have done over the last 3 games and England have won comfortably and you can only beat whats there

Report mafeking August 17, 2014 6:29 PM BST
england were rightfully number 1 on their achievements in 2010 and 2011. won about 8 series in a row absolutely demolishing sides loads of times by an innings or hundreds and hundreds of runs

they buried teams under a sheer mountain of runs and then applied the pressure with good new ball bowling and swann putting the squeeze on with older ball. they had batsmen making scores of 150+ on regular basis
