cant think of one player playing now that would be   guaranteed of being selected for their country in that era

I think clarke would slot somewhere into most australian sides.
Slater
Hayden
Langer
Ponting
Clarke (just ahead of Mark & Steve Waugh)
Hussey (to steady the ship if necessary)
Gilchrist
Warne
Lillee,
Thompson
McGrath
12th man Terry Alderman, B Lee, M Walker, S McGill (take your pick)
With that batting line up you would only need 4 top class bowlers
(alternatively you could go with one of the 12th men ahead of Clarke or Hussey but with that batting lineup it would unnecessary)
Pretty handy side in anyone's language I would have thought.
I am sure the West Indian side would be equally impressive and quite frankly frightening.

Slater? Surely you are not being serious there Lets Elope? I think Hayden/Langer will do opening and then Ponting at 3

You forget very quickly how good slater was and with him and hayden (fictional combination obviously)hammering any opposition attack from the outset would be an awesome sight, langer absolutely has to be in the side so he comes in at no.3 as he can hang around if there's an early wicket or launch an onslaught as well.

Slater played 74 tests from 1993-2001 131 innings scoring 5312 runs at average of 42.84 with a high score of 219 and 14 centuries, 21 fifties, his century tally which would have been even higher except for the number of times he got himself out in the 90's.

Langer 105 tests 182 innings 7696 runs at 45.27 top score 250, 23 100's, 30 fifties.

Hayden 103 tests 184 innings 8625 runs at 50.74 top score 380 30 100's 29 fifties.

For the number of tests played Slater compares favourably to Langer and Hayden and before imploding due to marital problems and a then undiagnosed polar disorder he was invariably worth the price of admission to watch him attack from the outset no matter who was bowling.

Thanks for the info Lets Elope, I guess I do forget how good he was in his day. But his average is still lower than that of Langer and Hayden, but you do make a good case. But does Australia really need him? I would opt for Langer/Hayden to open then Ponting or even Boon at 3 and 4 with Clarke at 5 etc.

boon was a good player but wouldn't rate him in the same destructive class as clarke, boon from 107 tests scored 7422 at 43.65 top score 200, 21 centuries, 32 50's, clarke up until this test from 99 tests 7298 runs at 51.75 top score 329 not out 26 centuries, 27 fifties.

Personally would much rather watch Slater in full flight than boon.

Is Greg Chappell disqualified from this thread ?
Surely better than everyone named except arguably Ponting.

It's a matter of opinion you have to have a proper in as close to normal batting order for the batsmen as possible, yes you could make case for ian and greg chappell, walters etc but that's my side and my opinion. Incredible isn't it that prior to Gilchrist, Rod Marsh was a walk up start as the keeper and now you can't find a place for him.

Until Ponting came along Greg Chappell was surely our best batsman since The Don.

Cant believe any of you Aussies would not have Bradman and Miller in your team . Unless you are only talking last 30 years or so .

Aus Team of the 70's 80's 90's and now

hayden
langer
ponting
g chappell
border
s waugh/clarke
gilchrist
Warne
Lillee
?
Mcgrath

The third paceman is the hard one.
The other problem i have is naming a team means Langer get a place where better players dont feature because of batting position

i think c mcdermott would be my 3rd paceman but lee. gillespie, thompson have all been worlds best for short periods of their careers

Nice team bobojon.
Alan Knott and Colin Cowdrey
were both still playing in the 70`s.
I`d have to have both of them in.

Thompson one of the feared bowlers in australian cricket history anyone suggesting McDermott is  even in the same post code as Thompson has no idea whatsoever about cricket.
