at the time Bob Taylor was considered a better wicketkeeper than Knott by most...Knott got in due to his batting ( playing for Kent rather than Derbyshire may have helped too)

I think Knott was the best I have seen.  I am not saying Taylor was not a great wicketkeeper too but to say he was stand out better than Knott is wrong.

It is all very well bashing out hundreds in even time but this guy held his catches and took his stumpings.  He was also a very good bat in the days when 210-5 was the norm.

Knott was one of the very few batsmen with the guts, skill and imagination to score runs off Lillee and Thomson in the first half of the 1970s. Have a look at some of those scorecards from 1974/5 Down Under. He and Greig had the bottle to stand up and deflect bouncers over the slips for boundaries, years before that sort of shot became popular.

One of the best players of the sweep against spinners I've ever seen - got down incredibly close to the turf to smother the ball.

And, as WD confirms, an excellent keeper.

A bonkers selection as was tendulkar.
If your picking wicketkeeper/batsman has to be gilchrist
If your picking the best gloveman pure and simple has to be Ian Healy

I thought Gilly was great but the only way that is true is if you live in a one house cul-de-sac ..........Crazy

Just been looking at the Botham's Ashes series

Interesting to see Knott's contribution!  Fans of Bob Taylor should look at it too! and The Managing Director of England Cricket!

Knott didn't score a hundred but scored over a hundred runs to help England win a test match.  Stats may tell you one thing but not always everything.  Context is often ignored when looking at stats.  Gilly is part of the Australia contribution that has changed the way Test Cricket is played, thank you Gilly but Alan Knott is the best I have seen since 1970.

Gilchrist was a one day specialist who was selected for his batting.

Healy kept him out of the Test side.

It was only when Healy retired that Gilchrist got in the Test team.

Gilchrist a better keeper than Knott?

Now that is phuucking hilarious!
