england should be favourites but you'll get over 3.5 for them, ditto the draw with india evens

Cheers Wurzel, was surprised that they didnt have another test series after christmas.  That significantly reduces the chance of him retiring after Nagpur.  Will he hold on to try and have one last assault on the aussies to avenge this series defeat/draw.  He shouldnt imo, it will only damage his legacy.

reason being if india somehow got a lead of around 100, there would be too much time left for england to even consider blocking for a draw so a positive result is 1.01 imo

Not sure that's much of an excuse. We're talking professional cricketers here. Not exactly the first time they ever would have had to come to bat after an extended spell in the field.

But it happens all the time dcanio.  Psychology is a massive part of ALL sports.  Innings victories happen all the time between teams that are not that different in ability.  Look at the results in the first two tests of thisnseries... 9 and 10 wickets in different directions.

I'm not sure what your point is (or more, what you think my point is). Just highlighting that the collapse in the first hour after lunch was from poor batting rather than conditions being such that it was inevitable.

Rob is right,

When the ball from Swan hit Zak's footmarks after lunch and bowled Sehwag the psyche changed again.  Gambir was a mess and ran out Pujara as well as giving up his own wichet.  The Sehwag factor is like being the best mate of school bully.  Once he is gone everybody shrinks!

Small margins, the difference is in the head.  England are not as talented but have a tougher constitution.
Report worcester sauce December 8, 2012 8:47 AM GMT
the problem for India is simple and can be summed up in 1 word Patience or lack of it
it never mattered before when sehwag went off at hundred miles an hour and failed cause he had sachin/dravid/laxman to bail them out well the 2 walls have gone and sachin is a shadow of himself
yuvi is not a test cricketer pujara is still finding his feet kohle has been woeful all in all this is the worst Indian team in years they need a complete clear out and let some new boys have a go

Report DStyle December 8, 2012 8:56 AM GMT
the patience issue is a manifestation of a more fundamental problem.

it's a lack of application and it applies to every single element of their game.

be it in the field, or bowling when the conditions or match situation aren't to the team's liking, or knuckling down when required when batting. the real graft isn't there. they've had such a wealth of talent in the past that it hasn't mattered too much, but when it starts to diminish they are horribly exposed.

and there doesn't appear to be anyone who get that through to them. it feels like a deep seated attitude problem, almost as though great performances are only great if they are effortless.

Which is one of the reason why backing low odds can be a great strategy

Report Whisperingdeath December 8, 2012 11:57 AM GMT
Backing at 1.01 is a great strategy if you want a small fortune.  The only problem is that you usually start with a large one!

Actually making 1, 2 or 3% over night is a great strategy if you have loadsa money.  I would imagine that's how the big boys clean up.

Me as a gambler I think it is crazy but I went to bed at 1.01 and now I have to pay 3% to get my money back, go figure.

No, I think WD was talking about that in reverse - i.e. backing the 1.01.  If you watch markets you'll see big lumpers come in occasionally - look at the volume spikes.

this match could get interesting if the last wicket manages a miracle of another 80 runs
Report Whisperingdeath December 8, 2012 11:13 PM GMT
yep to clarify what Nigel is saying is right, not the reverse.

If you have shed loads of money, a Ferrari and too many dizzy blondes to remember their names you dont wager £5,000 in the faintest of hopes of making £500,000!  You probably already got £500,000 and the rest and will wager a large sum to make £5,000.  Easy money.

Dicks like us will bet £8@38 ( which is what I did ) as a Hail Mary or in the faintest of hopes of a lay back or just to cover a potential red..

The big boys hoover it up.  Like the Banks who put money on deposit over night.

It is a a strategy to be employed if you have large amounts of cash,.

What Nigel is doing and saying is right but dangerous.  for example.  I covered my red this morning of £500 on the draw.  I had the choice to lay the England at 1.03.  That is like 3% or £15.  But I took the option to Buy the draw at 95 with £6, that is just 1.2%.  It covered my red and and left me some change if the last two do womething stupid.

I have come back home tonight and we are back at 1.01 to lay England or 200 on the draw so someone who laid my £6 at 95 on the draw could have bought it back tonigt at 200.

Easy money when it goes right

As for this could get interesting if the last wicket manages....

Just a point on that, the pitch will be rolled with the heavy roller.  It should be flat till lunch! or at least till the Pacquiao fight starts!
Report nigelpm1 December 8, 2012 11:20 PM GMT
The real point is you will get a major loss at some point but if you are backing 1.03 (which should occur 1/100) over time you make money.  It works for me anyway.
