but another mark appeared as the ball passed, as well as the bat clearly moving through noise which was clear on the image.

hotspot is weak. imho it provides false negatives and positives. i suspect because they've tried to eliminate the false negatives (i.e. edges not showing up) by turning up the sensitivity of the camera it now picks up too much noise and you get those sorts of results.

Let's be honest, for that horspot to be wrong, the noise would have had to appear in that exact spot and just after the ball had passed... how likely is that?

Watch any replay with the hotspot camera and there are loads of apparent hotspots even if the batsman was nowhere near the ball.

It is a dodgy piece of equipment. It should not be used to overturn umpires out decisions because that is only meant to be done if it is an obvious wrong decision.

At best it could be used to say there may be an inside if an umpire says not out, as there may be some evidence to support umps decision.

The point remains to overturn the umpire's decision there has to be conclusive proof of a mistake.

2. Clearly you don't even understand what a hotspot even is if you are confused that there may be other bright areas on the same picture

That video showed a mark where the ball passed the bat after the ball had passed the bat.

If you are going to use hotspot in DRS then if that happens you have to take it as fact. It's not like the mark was there before the ball had passed. What you are inferring as a possible instrument error is far less likely than some noise happen in an exact time and place for it to look like the ball had hit the bat when it didn't.

no, it was exactly where the ball passed the bat (even if it didn't hit). As the ball passed the bat precisely, the hotspot appeared instantaneously suggesting it hit the bat. it's not hard to comprehend really.

Report HansUlrichApfelStrudel July 1, 2012 7:00 PM BST
No I am not basing my arument on snicko.

The POINT is you have to conclusively prove the umpire was wrong.

Saying one of three hotspots which we know can be caused by noise appeared near where he may of hit it it is not CONCLUSIVE proof.

Given that there were three hotspots appearing at the same time is clear evidence of noise. This evidence would be thrown out in any criminal case as contaminated.

As I said before glad you are not a Detective in charge of a murder case.

Report Darlo Bantam July 1, 2012 7:14 PM BST
It's staggering but there's no comparison between these two sides. For what 20 years nearly, Australia were better in every department then under Vaughan we caught up with them and when we won the Ashes back it was an epic contest. But following the retirement of several key players, the roles have completely reversed. England are better bowlers, batsmen and in the field, and this isn't quite as good an England team as it was just a couple of years ago.
Report mafeking July 1, 2012 7:33 PM BST
not sure about that. at home england are pretty invincible at the moment. think they've lost 1 match in all formats in the last year and that was a virtual 2nd XI 20/20 against west indies at the **** end of last season. that's the sort of thing the old australia would do.

how many of the aussies would get in the england side ? no more than 3 or 4.
