I don't want to write him off just yet but he has looked of the requisite class just yet.

Surely there are others in county cricket who have scored more runs and might be better options ?

its ridiculous to say he cant play the short ball on that showing

Roach did the same to Ricky Ponting not long back and he is probably one of the best back foot players the game has seen.

It was just a great bit of fast bowling.

its too early to say about Bairstow imo but he is under pressure with compton's current season

Not exactly excited by the proposition of him playing Morkel, Steyn and Philander in 2 months time.

I would rather not see him start the next test but may make it longer term, who knows?

I'd hate to write him off so early, but my fear is he may not make it. Similar to Morgan he has all the shots and will no doubt be an incredible one day player, his only international stand out innings to date coming where he was allowed to come in and just hit, but I fear he doesnt quite have the stamina for the test arena.
Of all the lions I think Taylor has the best game to succeed at Test level, and Jos Butler to succeed across all formats.
But I do hope I'm wrong because I believe Johnny is a fantastic prospect.

Two innings is no time to start making judgements.  He should play the third test before the selectors take stock after that.  With all the one dayers before the south Africa series, much can happen before then.

2 tests, 3 innings, looked poor in everyone for me.  I actually thought when he was squinting / blinking to try and get his eyes in, he actually looked psychially scared waiting for roach to bowl. Laugh

6 odi, 5 innings, highest score 41, 90 runs in total.  Looked poor in 4 out of those 5innings. take out that high score and he averages 12 in the other 4.  Looked poor (as did most of the team) v the pak spinners.

6t20's, 5 innings, high score 60*, 3*,  91 runs. Very similar to the odi's for me, tho i think the 60 was a winningknock v pak here tho?? Think this was the only good innings iv seen at this level played by him.

Think he'l be a good county player but will find the step up abit too much.  Will be interesting if selected to seee how he handles the s.a attack.

anyone care to guess what his highest score would be v s.a.

He's shown guts by trying to play the short ball, but as it's getting him out he'd be better advised to learn how to duck it or sway inside of it ..the bowlers will soon get bored. I'd imagine he'll be facing enough short paced stuff in the nets for a while now and believe he is bright and good enough to learn how to play short pitched bowling eventually. As has been said, he's been facing fast medium English seamers in the main thus far, so it would have been a miracle had he taken Roach on and hooked him for fours and sixes.

I would be very surprised if he got out of the 30's against S.A.

He might get out first ball tomorrow but showed enough skill and guts today to suggest he can make it against the best attack in the world and coming in in tough circumstances.  Great stuff.
