knight is an ugly blight on the commentary landscape

he just about cuts the mustard for womens internationals and county games, but is completely redundant in anything more important and doesn't have the prestige to make up for it.

if sky feel desperate for someone to do the Ed Smith role in the commentary box, employ Ed Smith, instead of this terrible pseud excuse.

Pietersen basically saying that no matter how bad form he is in, there is no way anyone has the right to suggest that he should be dropped because he would still be better than any alternatives. What an obnoxious egotastic donk.

Wasn't Knight ahead of the game because the selectors did decide to drop him anyway in the end? So no wonder Sky have promoted Knight imo.

knight's problem is simple.

when required to do more than describe the immediate action, he presents utterly absurd suggestions, often the first thing that comes into his head, to appear to be a thinking man, a man with leftfield opinions, a man who can think outside of the box, because that's what the modern games needs.

a man with such original and unique views on the game should surely have produced a book (if not many books), or at least be a premium sports journalist any daily would gladly have on their books.

but no. and why is that you ask? because coming up with a series of words in a random order, is not the same thing as presenting a coherent, well thought out opinion. something he has never had in his life. and because he presents these ideas in live commentary to desperately portray himself as having s something other than the pedestrian tedious brain he was born with.

there were moments in the last T20 world cup when atherton and knight were in the studio together and atherton looked, quite rightly, utterly fed up with the relentless torrent of thoughtless verbal diarrhea being forcefully ejected from his mouth.

and so, if knight manages to inadvertently unleash some friendly fire with this unceasing avalanche of bilge, the victim has every right to be incensed.

It comes to something when our top international sports stars are being fined for speaking the truth, or giving their honest opinion. In an age of media coached responses from our top sportsman i can't believe this kind of thing isn't encouraged.

Knight's baffling rise within the sky cricket team needed to be checked by something, as a dedicated watcher of sky sports cricket, which Knight aside (and possibly Botham) is a world leader in sporting coverage, I'd say KP's done us a huge favour.

DStyle and dougy have it 100% spot on.  Sky Sports test match coverage is an absolutely joy (except the new intrusive graphics bar).  I can't think of any better sports coverage anywhere at the moment.

Beefy is clearly arrogant, ignorant and lazy in many of his views but at least he has the stature to partially compensate for that.  I fail to see what Nick Knight brings to commentary and am baffled how he has been promoted.  Gower, Nass, Athers, Holding, Lloyd and Beefy should be more than enough with Warne popping in from time to time.

With neither the steller career of Beefy or insight of Athers, Knight just tries too hard to say something the others can't and it's embarrassing.

No doubt all of this was the motivation for KPs tweet not Knights calls for him to be dropped .

Knight isnt great but kp is having a go purely because naughty nick dared to have the opinion that kevin might be at risk of losing his place in odi side. Thats what this is about nothing more nothing less.

Poor little kevin doesnt like having his big ego knocked.

My final word would be to say that Knight, good or bad will always have more right than kp to comment on England

whatever KP's motivation i don't understand why Kp shouldn't have the same right as anyone else to say Knight is sh*t at his job. When the facts are that Knight, is sh*t at his job.

I think Nick Knight is a really good commentator. He doesn't resort to the lazy and banal like Botham does and what exactly is wrong with thinking outside the box?
Why should it only be past England captains allowed to commentate on the sport - it does not make them any good at it. . Seems like a very closed shop otherwise.

the reason i and many can't stand knight has nothing to do with him not being an ex England captain. It's to do with fact that he spouts absolute nonsense most of the time. the guy very rarely has anything of value to say, very rarely gets off the fence and adds nothing to a team who with athers, nasser, bumble and Mikey have 4 of the very best commentators going around.

Apparently their feud goes back further and has been festering since.  If so, Knights comments re KP need to be seen in that light as well.

sky production is excellent but I find the commentators generally poor. They all tend to over analyse the game and rabbit on endlessly. Oh for a Laker, Arlott or Benaud.

The point is that Knight has all the right in the world to say what he wants about kp, he's employed to do that, i have no problem with him expressing an opinion on kp being in the one day side, the stats even backed up his point of view. Some on here ( i believe you were one of them steps) were making the same calls for kp to be dropped from the odi side.

The issue isn't what Knight says, it's what kp says, why should he be gagged from expressing an opinion on a pundit who's integral to the games coverage. Let people make their own assumptions on kp's motavation, why he's doing it is not the debate, should he be able to do it. Yes imo. The point is, and i made this 1st up, Knight is an idiot and kp was only asking the same question many of us on here have been asking for months. How come he gets a gig on the Test matches.

Shastri and Gavaskar are installed by the BCCI and paid by the BCCI.

My point is that the two bodies must be seen as independent of each other. Neither the broadcaster or the cricket board should be seen as calling the shots. They are two independent bodies and as such i have no problem any of the players questioning any of the pundits ability to do their job, the same way i have no problem with Knight criticising kp. I do have a problem with knight in general, but not with him having the right to criticise.

yep, agreed. although there's a line about criticising the company publicly, e.g. having a go at the dirty digger, but in this case it's all about knight.
