Overseas player 2011: Yasir Arafat (Pakistan); Dirk Nannes (Australia, for Twenty20) Overseas player 2012: Jacques Rudolph (South Africa, for the start of the season while Kartik playing in IPL); Murali Kartik (India, once IPL finished); Dirk Nannes (Australia, for Twenty20) Ins: Jacques Rudolph (Yorkshire), Jon Lewis (Gloucestershire), George Edwards (YTH), Freddie van den Bergh (YTH), Murali Kartik (Somerset) Outs: Michael Brown (RET), Chris Schofield (REL), Simon King (REL) Other news: Although centrally contracted by England, Kevin Pietersen has signed a deal with Surrey for the remainder of his international career. The following have all signed contract extensions; Jason Roy, Matthew Spriegel, Chris Jordan, Tim Linley, Arun Harinath, Matthew Dun, Zafar Ansari and Tom Maynard. Jade Dernbach, Stuart Meaker and Rory Hamilton-Brown have all signed new contracts. Former batsman Ali Brown has returned as 2nd XI coach.

Watched Surrey being absolutely rolled over by Somerset in a 3-day match at Taunton this afternoon. The Surrey attack was spearheaded by Dernbach and Meaker and Lewis, so it was pretty much their first XI, yet Hildreth, Kieswetter and Trego smashed them out of the ground.
Yesterday afternoon, in ideal batting conditions, the Surrey batsmen were blown away by Steve Kirby and Pete Trego.
Anyway, tomorrow Surrey need another 388 to win with 9 wickets left.
They were also tonked by Somerset in a 40-over game on Monday. Apart from the excellent Jason Roy, Surrey looked out of their depth against a proper Div. 1 team. Remember they only got promoted by the skin of their teeth on the final day, and then only thanks to Pragyan Ojha. He won't be coming back, and Murali Kartik is a lousy replacement. Somerset sacked him for a reason last autumn. By then his batting was better than his bowling.
It's also this huge gap in class between Div. 1 and div.2 that makes Middx, the other promoted county, look no value to me at 12/1. They'll definitely need Morgan to find some form in the First Class game, because there's so little depth to their batting. With Morgan's first-class average a mediocre 35.9, he'll have to find form he's never yet found for Middx.

Surrey for me too, despite the obvious drawback of them being southern nancy-boys & screaming's Goebbels-esque match report! No mention that Surrey were 'blown away' to the extent of having a 1st inns lead or are without Davies, Ramps, Tremlett, (who will play a lot for Surrey when he recovers in a month or so as he has slipped down England pecking order) & of course Kartik, who would have to bowl right-handed not to get a bagful of wickets during high summer on the Oval wicket. All in all look to have the strongest squad, along with Durham, so 8's was worth a stab. Should be a good close comp as usual.

That's true to an extent actually-no way will he be the run-machine of old. I thought VC had shamelessly put him up at 20's for Top Div 1 Bat to catch a few mugs out until I saw Sids have him at 10's!

Davies and Tremlett will be big additions to the Surrey XI currently not doing too well at Taunton, but I have big doubts about Ramps and Murali Kartik. If the latter does take wickets at the Oval in high summer, I'd expect every other Div. 1 spinner to take plenty more on those wickets. He was dreadfully out of form for Somerset with the ball last summer, hence they let him go. On the other hand I have to admit he was taking wickets for Railways in the Ranji Trophy before Christmas.
More than anything it's the gap in class these days between Div. 1 and Div. 2 which bothers me about Surrey (and Middx). The difference between the standard of cricket played by visitors to Taunton in 2007 when Somerset won Div. 2 and those who visited in 2008 was startling. It was almost club cricket to Test cricket

somerset done by their bogey team again. Still struggling to "smash" bowling attacks about when they're not playing at Taunton.
Very open this year imo, stuck to div 2 instead, come on the Kent.
