Morgan dropped with patel and tredwell in.  Cook, Strauss, trott, kp, bell are defo top five.  Then what, prior at six, patella at seven, or will patel replace Monty, a little unfair.  Will Finn have a look in, if so can't see them playing Jimmy at nine if Monty keeps his place.  I think broad and swann are definite, but is Jimmy?  Wouldn't be good for his confidence if they gave him a rest, the slightest niggle though and they might leave him out.  Would seem odd to go straight in with three spinners when we only had one for first test v pak.

Or is  bopara gonna be a straight swap for Morgan?  Tredwell surely a drinks carrier barring injuries.

Lots of questions, personally I think they might just put bopara in at six and patel and Finn miss out, if patel plays then Finn replaces Monty.

broad, swann, anderson and monty are absolutely nailed on as 4 bowlers. just a question of who bats 6 and 7.

personally i think i'd bat prior at 6 and play bresnan as well. surely gonna be more normal cricket in sri lanka with possibly long spells in the field for england. the likes of jaya, sanga and samaraweera have outstanding records as home but on the flip side they don't really have top class spin which troubles england batsmen.

however flower and strauss will no doubt be pretty reluctant to change the tried and tested 7 batsman and 4 bowlers so will probably go for ravi at 6 and getting 10 overs out of him and trott in a day and prior at 7.

no chance of patel playing as one of the 2 spinners. he's just not good enough.

Bopara for morgan

rest unchanged

Is kp not considered a spin option anymore?  Yes I totally forgot about bresnan, think I'd prefer him to patella if they're gonna play five bowlers.
Report rob_dylan February 28, 2012 10:09 PM GMT
Finn must get a look in at some point, perhaps he'll replace Monty when we return to blighty.  Tremlett defo in third place now behind Finn and Bresnan for now, and I think Finn may have jumped bresnan despite his inferior batting.

I'd love to be able to get Finn into the side, not quite sure what team I'd put out, thinking out loud here I go

Strauss, Cook, Trott, KP, Bell, Prior, ????, Broad, Swann, Anderson, Finn

I'd be tempted to go with just the one spinner I think and probably have Bresnan in there. It's a tough call, SL not the most potent of attacks. Could take Bresnan out in place of Monty if you wished, you would be lengthening the tail a little but Prior a more than capable batsman and Broad a decent-ish number 7. Think a lot of differing opinions on this.

Think you're on the money there jt.   Shoot out between bresnan and Monty for that last place.  I defo don't wanna have samit In the starting xi ... And I have more as much faith in bresnan as I do in bopara to get runs.  Actually, fk it play six bowlers, and drop bell.

Patel n Finn play.. Patel to lighten bowling load and plays spin reasonably well with bat. Finn one of best bowlers in the world.. has to play
Report rohit79 February 29, 2012 9:41 AM GMT
I would have Patel inplace of Morgan. Batting line-up with Patel at 6, Prior 7, Broad 8 and Swann 9 is good enough.

Need 3 spinners to take wickets against Lanka who are very difficult to beat on their flayt tracks. Hopefully a couple have some life.

Happy to play FInn instead of Jimmy if he looks ineffective in the 1st test especially if England get beaten. Jimmy will obviously be the leader of the attack outside the subcontinent but he hardly seems effective in this part of the world.

2 spinners are a must in SL in case they try to ambush us on a dusty turner (like they did vs Aus for the 1st test last year but that didnt work too well! )
Report RahulMumbai February 29, 2012 7:59 PM GMT
Monty + Swan would do for them ...
Report rob_dylan February 29, 2012 8:46 PM GMT
Jimmy did alright in Pakistan, unfair tomsaynhe is ineffective.  But he shouldn't be u droppable IMO.  Broad is the first fast bowler on the list now.  Maybe they'll wait for the summer to give Finn a go, it really is a bit of a selection dilemma,
Report TopTier February 29, 2012 9:13 PM GMT
Patel would be my pick. A third spinning variation to mix things up can make a huge difference in breaking partnerships in the subcontinent. Don't need to be too exotic but the change definitely adds to options. Also the batting is good strong enough enough if good enough and Bopara just adds a few runs in a draw. Unlikely to see Borpara making the difference with the bat in a result scenario.
Report Get On MASSIVE March 1, 2012 2:05 AM GMT
Certainly not Patel.

He's a decent enough all rounder at one day level but very much a bits and pieces player at test level and not good enough at either discipline to warrant a place in the side.
Report RahulMumbai March 1, 2012 6:41 AM GMT
I would rather Vote for Bopara as compare to Patel. He can certainly add value with bat and bowl. Patel is still in learning curve however Bopara prooved himself

Does anyone know if the DRS system is going to be used?
Report RahulMumbai March 1, 2012 3:27 PM GMT
Its not decided yet. In October ICC ended the mandatory use of DRS and reverted to its pre-June 2010 position. So now it will be used only if both the teams are mutually agreed .
Report Asparagus Man March 1, 2012 4:02 PM GMT
I'm presuming England will still be in favour - that has been their standard policy.

Can anyone comment on what the Lankans current thinking is?

Also isn't there a financial implication for the host board - knowing that Sri Lankan Cricket is broke (and the BCCI won't bail them out for DRS!)?
Report Lix March 1, 2012 6:50 PM GMT
I'm sure Sky wont mind providing it if asked.
Report RahulMumbai March 2, 2012 5:51 PM GMT
Considering Srilankan cricket board's debt and the cost involved in using DRS i doubt if it will be used ....
Report Asparagus Man March 13, 2012 10:06 AM GMT
DRS is in for this series, but without hotspot.
