Chris Woakes

I thought he looked a yard slow for international cricket when I saw him on TV, but young players can improve their pace with conditioning so I'll watch him with interest next time he is on TV. I suppose seeing someone like Bresnan in and around the England team would have to give Woakes some hope.

i hear what you are saying Deadly, but i do think there is a bit of an obsession with pace in todays game.

Pollock/ McGrath/ Clark/ Asif/ Zaheer Kahn all recent examples of guys being successful who never get over 85mph

You need to be very very classy to make the grade at that type of pace. I agree with what you are saying that high pace is not absolutley essential, but without it you need great control combined with a mastery of swing or the sort of natural bounce that has you hitting the splice off a good length.

I suppose someone like Hoggard might be a role model for Woakes. Hoggard had a very decent test career without ever being in the elite class of international bowler.

all of those guys (yes, all of them) have hit 90mph at some point in their careers.

they each got slower and cannier with age...otherwise an 80mph bowler will never cut it at international level.

woakes is ok from what i've seen, give him a couple years maybe. but if broad gets in...

I can promise ou that my fastest ever recorded ball was 79.9mph. So i don't even make it into the 80mph bracket!!

Woakes looks a good prospect, worth a go.

A fine young player IMO. I would sooner he got L&L spot on at his pace than spray it around a yard quicker. Excellent knock yesterday as well.

Another decent performance today, 49 from 16 balls & 6 overs for 26 runs, easily the best economy rate from either side in a high scoring match.

You can't argue with his form, if he keeps this up he will definitely get a go at some point soon.

Whats his pace like? Surely more of a threat than Bresnan. No harm giving him a go against Bangladesh.

80-83mph is his comfortable range, can push higher. He is listed at 187cm 6 2" but he bowls taller than that, has a high action.

Already looks to have out on a yard pace, bowling 85-6 and doesn't exactly look flat out, doesn't lose his shape or height at the crease either

Every time I see him I think future England material.

His discipline was outstanding, and he bowled a smattering of slower balls as well in that mid-80s average.

9 wickets and a 50 today, would take him to Australia ahead of Bresnan but absolutely no chance of that happening.

Indeed, it's Woakeshire at the moment. He's the only reason the Bears are not dead and buried in the championship this year.

Australia would be too early, and an inappropriate breeding ground. Fair chance next year though (Sri Lanka, 3 home tests & 5 ODIs, May-July), particularly if the winter goes poorly.

Spider - county is the bread and butter. It is surprising what you can pick up, particularly about the young guns.

A friend of mine was like "Chris who?", but the shrewdies have known about Woakes for a while. He first came to my attention the season he took a shedload in Div 2. [;)]

Another 100 today

Can add 3 wickets this afternoon too on a flat wicket.

Cricinfo pointed out that Woakes now has as many Championship 100s as Morgan.

Given that Sri Lanka and India are touring this Summer and both are much stronger batting than bowling I'd be tempted to get Woakes in at no. 7 in the Tests as part of a 5 man attack. If England go in with Swann + 3 seamers and no bowling back up amongst the batsmen, then I'm worried about what happens if Swann can't keep it tight from one end. Almost bound to be some long days in the field this Summer.

Bresnan would be the other alternative, but personally feel Woakes has more potential. Obviously they won't do that and it seems that Morgan is the anointed one.

I'd definately continue with him in the T20s, and perhaps (hopefully) the ODIs.

Forum spots the potential ! Good work nugget.

I was hoping this was one of the threads I was being a Woakes cheerleader on previously but it's a bit before my time.  I did argue his case when people were writing him off before this summer's tests though and have a lot of smugness value on my other cricket board for backing him even when he didn't look to be international class to a number of people.  It's a bit like people writing Stokes off as an ODI batsman based on a poor record until this year, really, when the obviously massive level of talent just had to be backed for longer.
