a 7 out of 10 due to the following
1. miming of songs
2. repeating songs and music
3. cover version of a band's song and the the original band plays as well ????
4. Russel Brand .... was he tested ?
5. The Spice Girls - terrible
6. no Queenie to close it
7. plugging of a new unknown song being mimed by one "artist" tut tut
Pause Switch to Standard View I can only give The Closing Ceremony

8. "Supermodels" ....didn't get that at all ???? Confused

I'm sure they give a feck but i thought the Greek bloke miming his new release and Posh representing british fashion were crass but other than that it was ok. From memory atheltes start to look bored about 10mins after arriving in the stadium for these things but most looked happy for the duration - even though the sound was app crap inside.

7/10 seems very high.  We could have done much better than that.

I agree. So, because we were only given 50% of Oasis, 50% of Queen and 50% of The Who but mainly because we got all the Spice Girls I am only giving 50% of the score so 3.5/10 it is.

Oops sorry minus 0.5 for trying to make people believe Posh Spice was a dress designer so 3/10.
Report treble August 13, 2012 12:56 PM BST
The Who singing one of the greatest songs of all time, Baba O'Riley, saved it for me.
Report judorick August 13, 2012 1:19 PM BST
amazingly take that followed by the Who rescued it

otherwise it would have been EPIC FAIL

still surprisingly poor for me and I loved the opening ceremony

A bit harsh on LOCOG as 50% of The Who are dead.  Laugh

They nearly saved it at the end but overall it was disappointing.  Mediocre performances (Liam Gallacher), obscure song choices (George Michael) and simply stupid bookings (Brand) all detracted from what could and should have been so much better.  Take That, The Who, Queen and surprisingly The Spice Girls all did okay imo.

Just showed how good the Opening Ceremony was.  That was much more difficult to pull and off and was brilliant.  Last night should have been a slam dunk but was a damp squib overall.

yes opening ceremony was a good 8.5/10

closing was much inferior
Report bb66 August 13, 2012 1:42 PM BST
agree, Opening Ceremony was better, though the performance of the remaining 50% WHO were better than Paul's.

I'll give it 6/10. It didn't do a lot for me.

It was too messy.

Would have liked them to have ended with Take That, and given them a bigger slot.

I don't like the Who but at least Roger Daltrey can still sing.

I liked seeing the athletes parading.

I'd have shortened it by an hour. It went on for too long.

Still, the Opening Ceremony was very good and the games themselves were fantastic.

That is what I will remember.

I never did work out why everything was covered with newspaper Confused

Very poor Closing Ceremony indeed for my money, despite the very best efforts of sound, lighting and camera staff. When one thinks of the unmatched canon of British literary and musical talent, this left a lot to be desired. I never thought I'd be nominating Jessie J (who???) as the star of the show. The stroking of various egos also has no place in an event like this. Ye Gods, VB announced as a 'fashion icon' ? That's a stretch.

The Opening Ceremony beggared belief in many places (e.g. the laughably dishonest presentation of Medieval and Industrial Revolution as multiracial and/or multicultural societies, the 'Year Zero' airbrushing of Empire from history, Dizzee Rascal in, Jane Austen out etc etc) but was a shining success in comparison with last night.

Neither came close to matching the excellence of many of the events, the athletic stars that emerged, and the enthusiastic crowds that attended.

Newspapers were rep of the rush hour as that is what the cars were and people have their head in their newspapers in the morning is app the eplanation. And Alun don't you see the contradiction in your point about Medieval/Ind times and Empire? And shhhhhhhh don't tell anyone but there have been interracial marriages on church registers in London (and prob elsewhere) since the C15 at least and shhh don't tell anyone again but black people played a big part in industrialisation and creation of wealth of this country for a mighty long time!

It was more about the proportions and the way those things were promoted spyker.

It's not being miserable T&C; it was just such a jolt to be brought back to reality.  For two weeks we had the whole nation supporting the same thing; and patriotism was allowed; and the unpaid volunteers made you proud .......... and then suddenly the celebrities returned and claimed the whole thing for themselves, and worse than that, you just knew they were being paid more than I earn in a year just for miming some dross. It just deflated me so much to realise that there was no "legacy". We are straight back to the vacuous celebrity obsessed drivel, and nothing has changed. Shame.

Eh wtf were you epecting at the end? I take it you would have preferred it if 'Dan the Man's musical roadshow (I do weddings and Bah Mitzvah's)' had just played the records? Like i said elements weren't brilliant but if the closing ceremony has ruined the games for you and you genuinely think the legacy is tainted as a result then you really do need to get out more!
Report Biscuit1979 August 14, 2012 11:08 AM BST
Can't believe no one has mentioned Eric Idle, thought he was one of the stars of the ceremony.
Report spassky August 16, 2012 1:38 PM BST
shhhh, spyker.... that's two embarassing posts in a row. Just because you saw that documentary about black people living in London hundreds of years ago, doesn't mean  "shhh don't tell anyone again but black people played a big part in industrialisation". They didn't.
Report nicky27 August 16, 2012 9:59 PM BST
Great to see Townshend and Daltrey still rocking at the end !! was well worth the wait Grin
Report spyker August 17, 2012 10:30 AM BST
You're right of course spassky - no Africans came with the romans, no africans ever came with the thousands of boats that docked in London (or any other major port) for millenia, no Africans were recorded as servants to the nobility, no africans served in the army, no africans worked in industry. None of these people that didn't exist ever settled here (not in great numbers but they did - sorry didn't- nonetheless). In fact all history of African in the UK started in about 1950 - you're right of course silly silly me........
Report spyker August 17, 2012 10:36 AM BST
And sorry but if the closing ceremony did spoil the Olympics for you then you are clearly as obsessed with celebrity culture as any 'Hello' reader. Sensible people just ignored the flim flam and enjoyed the Olympics for what they were and not 2 concerts with a bit of sport in the middle!
Report spyker August 17, 2012 10:41 AM BST
Oh and BTW who picked the cotton (and other raw materials) that was processed thus enableing industrialisation to take place?
Report freeze_the_secret August 17, 2012 12:12 PM BST
I understood the opening ceremony, not as a depiction of what England actually looked like in the middle ages, but regardless of race, just people, colour irrelevant.

That being the case, why when the depiction of the Windrush was shown, every person was black,WTF.
