I used to get emotional as a youngster when the BBC would do a closing montage of an Olympic games or a world cup. Some classical music and slow mo replays... the lump in my throat would appear and I'd be teary eyed!

God knows what I'm going to be like when this ends....

What a couple of weeks.

When can we host it again?

As a proud Brit and fan of most sports, I just don't these last two weeks will be matched.

Wigan v West Brom just won't cut it!  I remember feeling similar withdrawal symptoms after the magnificence of the 2005 Ashes.  Goodness knows what it will be like on Monday morning.  Sad

A great games with many fantastic performances.

I was reading a bit on digital spy last night, when we could host it again, ranged from next century, latter half of this century or intriguingly enough 2016 when Rio fails.

Just to add the crowds have been absolutely fantastic. Probably biased but they've been the best and most vocal, but fair, that I can remember from beginning to end.

I share the sentiments of this thread. I never thought i would ever enjoy an olympic games as much in my middle years as those when i was a boy. Some sporting memories just always seem better when you are a boy but i have to say i have watched these olympics with the same boyhood passion and excitement as i watched my first olympics in Moscow aged 10.
Report Darlo Bantam August 10, 2012 9:55 PM BST
America gets the games often enough. Since these games were the first time we were theoretically given the games proper then I think we should have again soon ... And there's always the Irish reaction to Gabby's quotes t'other night. Then again, I want to go to Rio after the experience these two weeks.
Report upthebumnobabies August 10, 2012 9:58 PM BST
Anyone checked Rio's 2016 website out? I had a look the other day, it's horrendous! Hopefully not a precursor!

I am not British but i have to applaud the home athletes and their supporters. The way the home people have got behind these olympics reminds me of Argentina hosting the world cup in 78 and the ticker tape reception the home team got when they played.
Report DonNo1 August 10, 2012 10:12 PM BST
It'll be a big comedown for me.  I don't know if any more so than Beijing but having been sceptical about hosting it it's far exceeded my expectations. Going from watching 10hrs a day of the sporting elite to nothing is quite a change.  The best and worst thing about the Olympics is that it's every 4 years Sad

agree, will be like having a massive hangover when normality returns on Monday.

We have to make extended use of the marvelous permanent venues, we have World Athletics Champs in 2017 and surely we can put on an event of similar stature in Aquatics Centre.

i reckon it's odds against we'll get it again this century not that any of us will be around to find out. we've already had it 3 times more than any other city and paris haven't had it for the best part of 100 years, rome over 50, germany 40 and surely it's only a matter of time before africa gets a turn.

yep it will feel like the end of the world on monday. nothing will ever come close to this again. HappySad

The opening ceremony seem like months ago now!

I live only 5 minutes walk away from the site, and have watched it grow from ground zero to witnessing GB have the best few hours on the track ever... and world records being set there under lights I can see from my doorstep. Surreal.
don't think we'll really be able to appreciate what was happening until the closing ceremony. I'll be very sad, and know I'll have to hide my tears.

During the Barcelona Olympics in 92 I was 12. I remember turning to my mum during the closing ceremony and saying to her that I felt like I had been on holiday for 2 weeks and it was time to go home.

I feel like that again. Sad

It has been stunning. The country has done itself proud. I will remember it forever. What with this and the fantastic jubilee celebrations, it truly reminds me of why I'm proud to be British.

The only drawback is that it seems to have plummeted Boris Johnson's price on being the next Conservative leader Silly Scary thing is, if he was, Conservatives winning the next election would be an absolute 1.01 job and you know it.

Considering the pessimism and security problems prior to the start of London 2012, I think GB (and team GB) have performed a wonderful job with the games. To finish 3rd in the medals table is an incredible achievement, I doubt many of us envisaged this 2 weeks ago. I was lucky enough to be in the stadium watching Usain won the 100 metres and although I really wanted to see a GB gold (Christine got the Silver), the evening was still my most enjoyable live event ever. I felt so proud standing and singing our anthem during the gold medal winner ceremonies for Mo and Greg; I was prouder still when I heard a couple of Americans talking on Stratford station later; one of them said 'gotta hand it to the Brits, they have certainly organised a fantastic games'.

Well done to all concerned, I thoroughly agree with the OP.

Once every four years is probably once too often for most of the sports.

1) We were always going to finish 3rd/4th in medals table with the investment spent.
2) It was always going to look spectacular with the investment spent.

The world athletic championships is decent. Cycling is the most overhyped, boring, characterless sport at the games and rowing is just nonsense, they will do well to get 3 men and a dog watching them at any other times.

Most of the rest is dross, only boxing of these sports outside the games generates serious spectator and tv numbers worldwide and its not hard to see why. The atmospehere and skill etc at the excel is different class. The atmos at the athletics is has been decent if a little embarassing when 60,000 start going beserk when a brit moves from last to 2nd last up the home straight!
Report Darlo Bantam August 11, 2012 1:54 PM BST

i feel sad too

it might be the thought of not having such an array of events each day to watch and bet on , or the fact that watching sport of that standard makes the day fly by, one shot at glory, do or die for men and women that have worked for 4 years

maybe it's because it's been unbelieveably well done in just about every respect, pretty much perfect from start to finish and it's been such great entertainment leaving you on a high each day

however, i suspect the biggest reason is i've just looked at the racing post, which says the next race is the 2.10 from lingfield .... that brought me back

Post Olympics depression well and truly kicked in here Cry

Fantastic spectacle as always

Premier League kicks off on Saturday and i'm not remotely interested in watching overpaid mercenaries throwing themselves round a pitch with little or no contact and feigning injury at every available opportunity

Then you have an athlete like Manteo Mitchell finishing the 400m relay with a broken leg bone - along with countless others who have worked their socks off for 4 years in the hope of Olympic glory for (in most cases) a fraction of the money. Olympians put footballers to shame.

I suppose the whole 4 year cycle is what makes the Olympics so special. Anyway, 18 months until Sochi Cool

"Far from Trouble

Utter garbage.  If you tried showing velodrome cycling twice a week over a 9 month season you'd have an attendance of about 15 people.  Let's face it the Olympics is a showcase for dull sports that commercially can't stand on their own over a sustained period of time.  (tennis and football aside which shouldn't be in there anyway).

It has it's place but in terms of popularity and longetivity there is no contest between domestic football and the olympics.  The poster can say he's not interested in the football mercenaries but he's in the minority.
Report jumper August 14, 2012 12:13 PM BST
People will drift back to football of course, but honestly Far from Trouble is right. How many more John Terry situations, the feigning of injuries etc and just the obscene levels of money involved are we going to put up with. I stopped attending football for the most part 10 years ago, although I didn't attend much before that, just got fed up with the tribal nature of it all, couldn't bring the kids to listen to all that abuse. Happy just to keep up to date with Match of the Day these days, and enjoy laying England at every major championships, because they'll choke, and as importantly, those guys have more loyalty to their clubs than their countries.

Each to their own, but for me its golf, cycling and racing with cricket not too far behind. Going to try again and follow other Olympic sports between games. Said this before but didn't keep to it. Swimming and handball for me.
Report Injera August 14, 2012 6:03 PM BST
Football is the meat and 2 veg, the Olympics is a five course meal you have very rarely. Lovely food, expensive and not what you want every week.

Get a bit tired of the football bashing by some in the media. Shine a light at the Olympians and you'll find loads of bad behaviour.

1) Swimmers urinating in the Olympic pool

2) Athletes failing drug tests

3) Matches thrown in the badminton (about as serious as is gets in sport)

4) 800m race thrown by the winner of the 1500m. Doctor's sick note clearly a lie.

5) Hockey players in the face of the umpire

6) Boxing ref sent home after shocking decision.

7) Female Fencer staging sit in protest after defeat.

8) According to my programme, 000s of condoms provided free. How many athletes cheated on spouses/partners?

Footballers' behaviour is a massive cause of concern but let's do away with this myth that the Olympians are on a different moral plane.
Report berto77 August 14, 2012 6:11 PM BST
Agree it's not a fair comparison.  Football remains the greatest sport but I do wish it would do more to tackle the worst excesses of player and fan behaviour.
